I had never been hiking before I came to Korea. The thought of climbing a mountain always sounded great but actually doing it terrified me. Around February time, a group of us decided to climb a small mountain in the area we live in. The climb nearly killed me, however, I vowed that I would get fit and try to climb the tallest mountain in mainland South Korea before I left for pastures new. The weekend that has just past, Andy and I did exactly that; we climbed all 1,915 metres of mount Jirisan! I am immensely proud of myself for a few reasons; 1) I have found a new hobby/activity that I like, keeps me fit and is fun 2) I achieved another goal whilst in Korea 3) I climbed in a pair of 3 ... read more
Its Monday 17th September and I (Emma) am sitting in a PC Bang, a large room that contains around 200 PC's. There are people in here studying, playing shoot 'em up games, racing car games, writing essays etc. There is also a guy here who looks like he may have been here since Friday. There is no natural light and I can see how you could loose track of time in a place like this.I am also killing time before I meet a friend. I have just been for my chest X-Ray, which, hopefully will be clear allowing me to enter Australia. For those of you we havent managed to catch up with yet, I have decided to head to Oz next month to find a job in Sydney. I am very excited but it will ... read more
The last month has been the slowest on record. The first 10 months of our Korean experience went so fast, the last month has felt like travelling up to Scotland on a tandem bike with only one person peddling. I dont know why it has seemed so slow. It just has. The last month has also seen good friends leave. It was bye-bye to Wes in August, and then cheerio to Liz 2 weeks ago. Yesterday, it was adios to Kim. We have had a few big nights out..partying until 9am at Michael and Jens...dancing with stuffed toy lions and cavorting on snooker tables... We have also been getting out and about on more hiking trips, having climed for around 5 hours, a few weeks ago AFTER a big night out the night before. This weekend ... read more
Cathay Pacific rocks. We managed to get extra leg room, great movies and plenty of red wine/beer on our flight from London to Hong Kong. The only downside to the flight was that we didn't get any shuteye for the whole flight. We landed at 6am or so and headed towards our hotel in Kawloon, the 'Las Vegas', which promised sea views, big windows allowing us lots of light and very spacious. The Las Vegas was nestled within a building in Kawloon, an area renowned for its multi national community y, shops and the ability to score a 'real' Gucci bag or Rolex. Not that we are snobs, but we were after a sea view and a sea view was not what we got. Our view was of a million small windows belonging to people who ... read more
Andys powers of persuasion worked on his director, which resulted in a few extra days holiday to go back to England for L&O's wedding. We eventually touched down at Heathrow at 6am on Wednesday July 18th. My sister Charlotte picked us up at the airport in her new sporty little number, and as we drove we thought of ways to wake my mum up without giving her heart attack as she would still be in bed AND she had no idea we were coming home! We got back to the house and Charlotte went into the bedroom to wake mum up, telling her she had overslept and she had best get up for work. Once Charlotte left the room, I then went in and said, 'Morning mum, fancy a cuppa?'. She looked at me confused, as ... read more
Celebrating the loss of our Colonies Asia » South Korea » Busan By em andy July 5th 2007 em&andy We have made many good friends here in Korea and most of them are either American or Canadian. After spending the weekend in Seoul on Canada Day (1st July) and missing our friends A&D party we decided to have a 4th July party at our new apartment to celebrate losing our Colonies and to help our American friends feel more at home. What was originally a quite 4th July at ours with our good friends Kelsey and Nate turned into a great party in the evening with around 10-15 people crammed into our small flat. We made lots of yummy traditional 4th July food; potato sala... read more

I forgot just how different to Busan Seoul really is. We live near Busan which is very Asian; bright lights, hectic, busy streets etc. Seoul is very much like London with its cosmopolitan feel, wider streets, and so many waegooks that you almost forget you are in Asia! After an amazing morning at the DMZ we headed back to the centre of Seoul and hit the electronics market. A few months back we had our camera stolen. I was pretty gutted as this had been a gift from all my friends at Haymarket. We have been saving to buy a new one and the electronics market had been rumoured to sell cameras at half the price of those sold in England. The market was massive; rows upon rows of electronics, MP3's, cameras, camcorders, phones, laptops ... read more
We have recently moved apartment. When we fist moved to Korea the contract Andy took was based on our apartment which was big, new and very modern. Unfortunately, when the contract was signed we didn’t realise we were signing up for 7 months of abuse, racist chants and indecent exposure from our neighbour. The neighbour, I will refer to him as *s* as been an absolute nightmare from the word go. It all began when we first moved in back in November and was often told to 'shut up' and 'be quiet'. This then moved on to smashing things, kicking at our door and strangling a friend of ours who came for dinner. Our evenings were often spent whispering to one another and literally tip-toeing around our home as to not annoy the neighbour. In short, ... read more
Beachee fun Asia » South Korea » Busan By em andy June 12th 2007 em&andyThe last month and a half have consisted of many weekends away or mid week jaunts to the beach. Monsoon season is nearly upon us so we have been taking full advantage of the sunny and sometimes 'too hot' weather. These pics are courtesy of some of our friends out here as some ass stole our camera and we havent made it to Seoul yet to buy another. ... read more
