With yet another day of severe jet lag and suffering from the time difference, I spent the day at Arlington National Cemetary. What an amazing experience! I was to touched, honored and inspired by this hallowed ground. Speechless from the stretches of white tombstones, I think every American should visit this place. I took the easy way out and opted to purchase a ticket for the tram. With very sore feet from the day before, I was grateful for the tram ride. The first stop was JFK's gravesite, on the bottom of the hillside below Arlington House and marked by the Eternal Flame that Jackie and RFK lit at Kennedy's funeral. It was a solemn, peaceful, and reflective place. So much lost. I immediately thought of my dad and all my years of him remembering the ... read more

After a much anticipated arrival into Reagan airport and a not so surprising piece of lost luggage, I checked into my hotel in Alexandria last night. Eager to explore King Street and wanting to take my mind off of the fact that I might have to wear white linen pants for five days, I strolled carefree down the cobblestone streets of Oldtown Alexandria. The evening was perfect. It was still early enough that the crowds were low and I was able to find a prime seat at an Irish bar call Murphy's. My Bushmill's and Coke made me homesick for Jimmy, but I had a nice time. I had dinner in my hotel's bar area and enjoyed a beautiful steak salad. Medium rare filet mignon on a bed of spinach with gorgonzola cheese and candied walnuts. ... read more

How can any self-respecting political science major and amateur presidential gawker admit to never having visited our nations capital? A dream of a lifetime that will come true today, I am high in the sky (in an airplane with wifi, yahoo!!) on my way to Washington, DC. Well, Alexandria, Virginia actually - but close enough. I am wisely packed, walking shoes only and ready to experience an adventure to remember. Traveling alone, I plan to savor every moment of the next few days. And when the conference begins, I plan to have visited all the amazing monuments, museums and sights. My first opportunity to visit DC was foiled by 9/11. It was a heartbreaking time for our country, but flying was out of the question. Even this morning, my stomach flipped a few times due to ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Moab August 9th 2011

My last post was last week...five eventful days ago. Tonight, as we relax in beautiful Moab, Utah I thought I would attempt to update my travel blog and capture all the details. Well, at least the ones I can remember. We ended up skipping Crystal Hot Springs to get into SLC a bit earlier. We were both excited to arrive and begin the family weekend celebrating Jim's mom and dad's 50th anniversary. Friday, we ran a few errands, had some dry cleaning done, ran to Target for a few last minute party supplies and then went out to my in-laws to see everyone. We had a nice dinner outside at a restaurant called La Puente, best known for smothered burritos. Jim and I both ordered cold Coronas but because we sat outside, the manager came running ... read more

We arrived in Boise late afternoon yesterday - what a terrific city!! We have had a lot of fun and celebrated Jim's 36th birthday in style! We arrived a bit too early to check into the hotel, so we wandered down 8th street and discovered a section with restaurants, a fountain and shops. We wandered around and stopped into a Mexican place called The Matador for pre-dinner drinks. Jim had a cadillac margarita and a shot of Clase Azul - his favorite. I had a fresh Tamarind margarita with a cinnamon-sugar rim. It was so good and so unique. I had never had anything like it. A perfect way to start our celebration! Jim selected Prime Rib as his birthday dinner, so after we freshened up and got all our gear unloaded into the hotel room, ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Pendleton August 3rd 2011

The next morning – Tuesday – we headed on up to Pendleton, Oregon. Following a long 300+ mile route, we arrived late afternoon and checked in and schlepped all our gear into our room. We decided to continue our microbrewery adventures by stopping at Prodigal Son, a local place that is getting rave reviews. I can tell you why – fantastic beer! We will most likely need to cool it with the beer soon as our digestive tracts are in full rebellion and I am quickly realizing that I may not have work pants that fit me upon our return. But back to the beer – I started with the Stout, thick and chocolaty with nitrogen. Jim had the Sun-Ra, a phenomenal Belgian that I decided to try too. Rather than order dinner, we stuck with ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Astoria August 3rd 2011

Well, it’s been a few days since I last posted, mainly due to a couple of much needed quiet days in Astoria, Oregon and one overnight in Pendleton, Oregon as we now make our way to Salt Lake City, Utah, via Boise Idaho. To recap: We had a winding drive out of Pacific City, on our way to the border of Oregon and Washington. Astoria, home of the winter encampment of the Lewis and Clark expedition is a small town on the banks of the Columbia River, right at the mouth of the Pacific Ocean. Our hotel room had a view of the river bank and each morning we watched the tides roll out and the seabirds land and feast. We arrived a bit too early and had to wait for our room to be ready ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Pacific City July 30th 2011

Following a long, winding drive up the coast we arrived in the beautiful town of Pacific City, Oregon. Late afternoon with fog rolling in, strong breeze blowing, we drove up to a vacation rental home we discovered on VRBO. Behind a gated community with beautiful beach homes built into the sand and long ocean grasses, the house we rented for two days was perfect! It had three bedrooms and tons of space…including a great kitchen. Pluses: a refrigerator covered in word magnets, decent cooking utensils and Jim’s amazing clams for dinner. Minus: electric stove that is really hard to regulate. We decided to head to Pelican Brewery upon arrival and test their beers. A great restaurant right on the sand, the brewery had a fantastic Winema Wit for me and McPelican Scottish Ale and Doreyman Dark ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Winchester Bay July 28th 2011

I find it completely outrageous that we have such a hard time relaxing! Perhaps a sign of go-go-go in our normal lives or that we have become totally addicted to fast everything - internet speed, restaurant service, entertainment, even sightseeing. Relax, already! Damn It! Relax! We have now visited Crescent City, California and are in Winchester Bay, Oregon until tomorrow. Crescent City was beautiful. A beach-front community with easy access to the Redwood Forest. We took a leisurely drive through the beautiful old growth redwoods and stopped a couple of times to take photos. After that, we headed to the state park where the local lighthouse is found. Along the beach, we happened upon a fantastic tidal pool and I plucked a starfish from the sea! Totally cool!! The lighthouse visit was beautiful - a blustery, ... read more

A lazy Sunday on Haight/Ashbury - our last full day in San Francisco was yesterday and we moseyed to a place that will forever live in infamy. Long known for the quintessential stop during the Summer of Love, the Haight is best known for young people sitting on the corner with flowers in their hair. My, how times have changed. The area is now a strange mix of psychedelia, head shops, folks selling pot mixed with high end boutiques, baby gap and a place to make soy candles. My mind kept jostling between hippy and yuppy, hippy and yuppy, hippy and yuppy. We visited a few Tibetan shops, a head shop or two, grabbed a quick bite at a local pub and hung out at Amoeba Music - one of the most impressive used music stores ... read more
