| 27th May 2009 je passe mon bac | - From: São Luis, Maranhão my theory about the seashells is the following: illegal migrants who were on boat, full of those seashells they carved & were planning to sell in another country, were caught in a storm & unfortunately with the huge waves, the bags of seashells were tipped over board.. & several days later they were found on this beach! |
| 27th May 2009 Anne | - From: Lencóis Maranhenses Those photos look... otherworldly. It must have been a magic experience to walk there! |
| 25th May 2009 perica | aviso - From: Lencóis Maranhenses Acho bom que você curta S.Luís o mais que puder,se não durar esta crise os do turismo vão destruir o lugar, como já fizeram em quase toda a parte1 |
| 20th May 2009 the mother | toxic fish - From: São Luis, Maranhão multiple muggings, vertiginous precipices, venomous coral snakes, hurled rocks, valueless life and toxic fish... what other delights for the nail-biting parent to peruse on your blog? |
| 19th May 2009 davinbrazil | Blowfish - From: São Luis, Maranhão Mh, if it is indeed a blowfish, I guess the tide theory of their death doesn't really stand up anymore really, does it? Probably most likely they got fished, died and then got chucked out into the sea for them to be washed out to the shore. Thanks for that Aidan. |
| 19th May 2009 ale | - From: São Luis, Maranhão My brother has a Brazilian friend who says that if you live in Brazil you're much better off being a monkey than a person because monkeys have more rights and the government actually protects their lives... You look like what I imagine Robinson Crusoe looks like. xxx |
| 18th May 2009 Aidan | fish - From: São Luis, Maranhão yo dave. sympa la plage - ca fait contraste avec la ville, quoique il semble que les deux soient plutot deserts... the fish in the photos is a blowfish- one of the most poisonous animals in the world, and the most toxic of fish. If you wanna look it up, it's part of the tetraodontidae family. |
| 15th May 2009 ale | - From: Up North Oh, and the captions of your photos never fail to amuse. I'm never quite sure when you're being serious and when you're being subtly sarcastic... :P. xxx |
| 15th May 2009 ale | - From: Up North Those beaches are stunning! I would give anything to be somewhere like that now... I'm so glad you're still enjoying yourself and are still curious and motivated to keep traveling and learning. I hope these weeks you have left are awesome! Take care, xxx |

| 1st April 2009 carolina | hello - From: À L'Ouest rien de nouveau Just to tell you that I think that if you stay a little longer in one place in a new country, you will come to know that country a little better than if you went around `´just seeing more´´.After all understanding Brasil will help you enormously in the way you will look at it.E o seu portugues tambem vai melhorar!Enjoy |
| 18th March 2009 Anne | describing flaura and fauna - From: Orchids while I like reading your more intricate articles on brazilian history and climate change, I get a real kick from your description of the brazilian flaura and fauna! |
| 17th March 2009 perica | Pior ainda - From: The Age of Stupid I am not being rude to write in portuguese,I am only rendering homage to our truly brilliant blogger, and try to give an incentive for others to learn languages(specially to those with computers)Mas e se tudo fosse apenas o começo da quinta glaciaçao?vou ter de começar a por acentos |
| 15th March 2009 Jen | Lol - From: Blog impressions, week days and Açaï Came across a bottle of Açai juice in town today after reading your comment. Its a bit strange isn't it. Bit like a mix between Bluberries and Blackberries but without the sugar or sour. But apparently Gok Wan says they should be part of every ones diet.....so your on the right track LOL |
| 15th March 2009 perica | - From: Blog impressions, week days and Açaï voce ainda nao arranjou uma namoradinha para praticar o seu brasileiro?devia arranjar!aonde vai agora?nao va embora sem ir a uma livraria ai,acho que voce vai adorar livros de historia do Brasil.Estou atentar lembrar-me do exacto nome, para dar a voce antes de voce ir(nao estou a por acentos porque e´´chato) |

| 14th March 2009 Nathalie | - From: Blog impressions, week days and Açaï Açaï, delicious??? that is a topic for serious discussions, my friend. personnaly I would put it in the "mud-looking and sluggish mud-tasting" category (but don't worry, it's getting very hip here, you'll find tons of it when you come back. Have you tasted acerola yet? Parabens on the time spent already, and on the blog! Any plans of moving soon? if you want to stick to lençois, try the maranhenses ones, pretty impressive (though slightly less green) as well! and São Luis do Maranhão is the best city ever. (then again I guess you could say that of about half the cities in nordeste alone...) bisous |
| 14th March 2009 thérèse | - From: Blog impressions, week days and Açaï açai!! |
| 3rd March 2009 ale | - From: Around Lençóis I'm trop jalouse too!! What kind of stuff are you translating? Are you doing it from Portuguese? If you are, then I must say I am very very impressed :)! xxx |

| 19th February 2009 Lydia | rich and poor - From: More violence in Brazil I think you have socialist bones David. That is why you can't bring yourself to hate them. I'm sure they appreciated your obliging reaction to being robbed and I expect it was worth the 3 euro mobile phone to get those interesting reactions... glad to see you are using your blog-space to put the world to rights - or at least not to stand by and watch the wrongs in silence - or at least to critically analyse it all anyway....let us know of any conclusions you come to, un beso, Lydia |
| 18th February 2009 Wazlawik | Morro de Sao Paulo - From: Na Ilha de Morro de São Paulo I have visit many beaches in Brasil, on all the states, but i don´t think there is a better than Morro de Sao Paulo! |
| 10th February 2009 Mo | - From: Stats, stats, stats this entry reminds me of Dan hough's line- there are three types of lies- lies, damn lies and STATISTICS... |
| 10th February 2009 julie | inequality - From: Stats, stats, stats inequality is much higher in Brazil than in the US - the gini is around 0.6 in Brazil and only (well, "only" is the wrong word) 0.4 in the US - and the brazil estimates ignore the population in the rural amazon area. The race inequalities do overlap with the regional inequalities - as you'll have noticed by now! The definitions used by the stats agency in the household surveys are really interesting - people are classified literally by colour - white, brown, black and yellow. I'm not joking. I have a stack of stuff on all of this! Loving your blog and very jealous. xxxxxx |
| 10th February 2009 Riccardo | Même pas mal - From: Na Ilha de Morro de São Paulo (2) Accroche-toi, on est tous avec toi... On sait que tu traverses des moments difficiles ;o)) |
| 4th February 2009 Hilia | - From: Stats, stats, stats are you sure that was not some american sitcom which was dubbed into portugese? one of the pictures looks a lot like the mum of the 70 show... secondly, dont worry about dryness, i am still looking for something drier than that politics books we had in second year... theories of state? bwerk..... i have goose bimps just to think about it again! =) keep on writing it brightens my day here at the office |
| 4th February 2009 elliott | - From: Stats, stats, stats super article dav (inc photos), merci |
| 2nd February 2009 ale | - From: Na Ilha de Morro de São Paulo Jealous? You think *that* will make me jealous? As if sunshine, beautiful landscapes and the warm blue ocean could possibly better than -2 degrees, snowstorms, wind, and no hope of it ever getting warmer. Pleeeeeeeeeease, surely you jest. |
| 2nd February 2009 Tom | wow - From: Na Ilha de Morro de São Paulo (2) I'm jealous... |
| 29th January 2009 ale | - From: Week 2 of Classes Aw, so French worrying about structure and clarity, haha. I'm kinda jealous of you learning Portuguese with a Brazilian accent! I think it's the sweetest and most beautiful language... Keep writing! It's nice to hear how you're doing and your posts always give you something to think about :). xxx |
| 29th January 2009 William | - From: Week 2 of Classes Of course as a tourist you have to be more careful because some bad people may try to take advantage of you but I'm brazilian and i live in a bigger city then salvador( Belo horizotne which is the 3rd largest city here) and dude, its really sad that tourists aways have the same impressions about brazilians, that all they know how to do is drugs, parties, caipirinhas, churrasco, etc........ this is kind of true(not the drug party for me lol) but hey every country has their upper and lower side do you agree? I've lived in the US and I can tell you, people use way more drugs there then anyone that I know and i mean, maybe the poorer here use lots of drugs but there the middle class guys like me and my friends(who don't do shit like that) never even seen in front of |

| 14th January 2009 Tai | The Journey Begins - From: And so I left... [-- ...and so Bilbo set off on the track, his knapsack on his back, at the crack of dawn with the sky just shy off black. The little hobbit was not at all scared, for he was well prepared, bread pack with care, a few socks spare and a mat to sleep anywhere. Over beaches and through rainforest, the hippie hobbit hopped, and in the towns he shopped alot, and told many a tale of.... France. --] I can see this will be come an epic adventure :-) I look forward to reading more about your adventures in Bazil-land! |

| 13th January 2009 Aidan | Good shot - From: O beija flor and other little birds Agreed. They're not easy to photograph, the hummingbirds, yet you've done a pretty good job. Some good photographer's skill there. Can't name the other birds. never seen them. Is this what distracted you when you were getting mugged then? |
