je passe mon bac
- From: São Luis, Maranhão
my theory about the seashells is the following: illegal migrants who were on boat, full of those seashells they carved & were planning to sell in another country, were caught in a storm & unfortunately with the huge waves, the bags of seashells were tipped over board.. & several days later they were found on this beach!

toxic fish - From: São Luis, Maranhão
multiple muggings, vertiginous precipices, venomous coral snakes, hurled rocks, valueless life and toxic fish... what other delights for the nail-biting parent to peruse on your blog?

Blowfish - From: São Luis, Maranhão
Mh, if it is indeed a blowfish, I guess the tide theory of their death doesn't really stand up anymore really, does it? Probably most likely they got fished, died and then got chucked out into the sea for them to be washed out to the shore. Thanks for that Aidan.

My brother has a Brazilian friend who says that if you live in Brazil you're much better off being a monkey than a person because monkeys have more rights and the government actually protects their lives... You look like what I imagine Robinson Crusoe looks like. xxx

fish - From: São Luis, Maranhão
yo dave. sympa la plage - ca fait contraste avec la ville, quoique il semble que les deux soient plutot deserts... the fish in the photos is a blowfish- one of the most poisonous animals in the world, and the most toxic of fish. If you wanna look it up, it's part of the tetraodontidae family.

Just to tell you that I think that if you stay a little longer in one place in a new country, you will come to know that country a little better than if you went around `´just seeing more´´.After all understanding Brasil will help you enormously in the way you will look at it.E o seu portugues tambem vai melhorar!Enjoy

Açaï, delicious??? that is a topic for serious discussions, my friend. personnaly I would put it in the "mud-looking and sluggish mud-tasting" category (but don't worry, it's getting very hip here, you'll find tons of it when you come back. Have you tasted acerola yet? Parabens on the time spent already, and on the blog! Any plans of moving soon? if you want to stick to lençois, try the maranhenses ones, pretty impressive (though slightly less green) as well! and São Luis do Maranhão is the best city ever. (then again I guess you could say that of about half the cities in nordeste alone...) bisous

I think you have socialist bones David. That is why you can't bring yourself to hate them. I'm sure they appreciated your obliging reaction to being robbed and I expect it was worth the 3 euro mobile phone to get those interesting reactions... glad to see you are using your blog-space to put the world to rights - or at least not to stand by and watch the wrongs in silence - or at least to critically analyse it all anyway....let us know of any conclusions you come to, un beso, Lydia

inequality - From: Stats, stats, stats
inequality is much higher in Brazil than in the US - the gini is around 0.6 in Brazil and only (well, "only" is the wrong word) 0.4 in the US - and the brazil estimates ignore the population in the rural amazon area. The race inequalities do overlap with the regional inequalities - as you'll have noticed by now! The definitions used by the stats agency in the household surveys are really interesting - people are classified literally by colour - white, brown, black and yellow. I'm not joking. I have a stack of stuff on all of this! Loving your blog and very jealous. xxxxxx

Of course as a tourist you have to be more careful because some bad people may try to take advantage of you but I'm brazilian and i live in a bigger city then salvador( Belo horizotne which is the 3rd largest city here) and dude, its really sad that tourists aways have the same impressions about brazilians, that all they know how to do is drugs, parties, caipirinhas, churrasco, etc........ this is kind of true(not the drug party for me lol) but hey every country has their upper and lower side do you agree? I've lived in the US and I can tell you, people use way more drugs there then anyone that I know and i mean, maybe the poorer here use lots of drugs but there the middle class guys like me and my friends(who don't do shit like that) never even seen in front of

[-- ...and so Bilbo set off on the track, his knapsack on his back, at the crack of dawn with the sky just shy off black. The little hobbit was not at all scared, for he was well prepared, bread pack with care, a few socks spare and a mat to sleep anywhere. Over beaches and through rainforest, the hippie hobbit hopped, and in the towns he shopped alot, and told many a tale of.... France. --] I can see this will be come an epic adventure :-) I look forward to reading more about your adventures in Bazil-land!
