Arriving to Asuncion from Horqueta Friday morning brought me into my last week in Paraguay. I worked from home on the list of confirmed participants for the Conference during the day after getting some rest, and met with Martin that night to say goodbye and thank him for all he had done for me. That night I ate at a crepe restaurant with the interns. It was really cute! On Saturday, I decided to wake up early and hop on a bus to El Centro (downtown) to buy some last souvenirs and gifts, and to see downtown one last time before I leave. I walked around all morning until the early afternoon and walked down the Paseo Artesanal (artisan walk). Also, there happened to be a parade with people dressed in “typical dress” outfits who were ... read more

For this next blog, I decided to finish on a Thursday (instead of my usual Wednesday) because I had a trip that lasted Wednesday and Thursday. This week at work, I worked on better organizing the topics for the “Mesas de Dialogo” (roundtable discussions), and I created a detailed agenda by adding the location of each event and the materials necessary (tables/chairs/projector/screen/etc.) at each event. I prepared for and attended a meeting for funding with Programa Conjunto (to secure about $12,000 of support from them). My next task was to get us completely organized for the last couple weeks before the conference, so I created a table to identify who is in charge of which tasks and who needs to be paid which amount by the day of the conference. As the week of August 8 ... read more

I cannot believe that it is August already! There is still so much I want to do before I return home. This week at work, I wrote more about the water boards, and I am just about complete with that project. I also worked more on the budget for the Water Conference by adding columns for each sponsor, adding how much money we have raised, and adding how much we have yet to raise. I looked up business contacts to send letters to for supporting/donating to the Conference. Friday was another day of working late, but well worth it, as we made much progress for the Conference. I went salsa dancing again this week. It was really fun to have a place that I am familiar with to go to, and I always have a good ... read more

Thursday morning, we had a meeting with MassPublicidad to discuss the progress they have made for the publicity for the Water Conference and to confirm the cost of their work. The rest of the day I wrote and sent out more invitations for the Conference to senators and diplomats. That night, I went salsa dancing at a place called Café Bohemia. Every Thursday night, they have a live salsa band for dancing. It was a blast! Friday I continued working on writing about the juntas and I translated two documents for a conference that will be held in Cusco, Peru in September of this year. Also, our entire office went out to lunch at Ese Lugar to celebrate el Dia de la Amistad (Friendship day). The official day is on July 30, and it’s somewhat a ... read more

I passed my halfway mark this Sunday! Unbelievable! The weather is still switching from warm and sunny to mild and raining to clear and chilly. It can’t make up its mind, but I enjoy it. It is a change from the heat I am sure you are all receiving in the U.S. (specifically Sacramento and Stockton). At work we are still working on planning the Water Conference. Friday, I worked on the invitation to send out to government organizations (authorities), sponsors, and the Federation of Water Boards. I also worked on the executive summary (to ask for more support). Saturday I went to Conmebol (the South American Soccer Confederation). We had a tour of the museum, where we heard a lot about soccer’s past in South America, watched a video, and saw many trophies from different ... read more

Week 4: July 13 - July 20 My fourth week started with a bang! I finished translating the USAID document in a 12-hour work day! In the middle of that day, we visited another junta (water board) in Posta Ybyraro, a town about 30 minutes outside of Asuncion. This junta is much more developed compared to the three juntas I visited on my second day in Paraguay. They serve a larger population, have a plan for the future, and support the culture of the community by holding a dance school on their second floor. That night I left the office at 9 pm, and I had to wake up early the next morning (Friday) to leave Asuncion for a meeting out of town. This meeting was held in Eusebio Ayala and it covered the National Water ... read more

Week 3: July 6 - July 13 Three weeks in. I cannot BELIEVE how fast time is going, but at the same time, I feel more comfortable here and as if I have been here for over a month! The professor leaves this Saturday, so as a final night out we walked around Las Carmelitas and went to dinner at Un Toro y Siete Vacas (One Bull and Seven Cows). This was by far the most DELICIOUS meal and BEST service I have had so far in Paraguay. It is a fancy restaurant with an atmosphere between western (like being on a ranch) and classy (strange, I know!). It is in a chuchy (upscale) area; the neighborhood is called Villa Morra. The waiters treated us like king and queen, and we had wine, bread, yucca, soup, ... read more

Week 2: June 29 - July 6 ¡Hola! ¿Que tal? Another week into my Ambassador Corps! I can’t believe I am two weeks in! Time flies… This week, I picked my projects. I will be helping to organize the Primer Congreso Nacional de Juntas de Saneamiento (First National Conference for Water Boards). It is the first time that all of the water entities in Paraguay are coming together to discuss water issues. A main purpose of this conference is to give recognition to the water boards, which provide water to all of the small towns in Paraguay (which is about half of the water to those in Paraguay who do have access to water). AVINA works hard to make sure that the stronger water boards help the weaker water boards. This conference will give them a ... read more

Week 1: June 22-June 29 Hola! I received an Ambassador Corps scholarship from the University of the Pacific's Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship to travel to Asuncion, Paraguay, where I am working with AVINA. As a requirement for receiving the scholarship, I must keep a blog entry at least once a week. That blog is located at another site, but I wanted to keep a more personal, less formal blog, too! Some entries might sound a bit "clean and formal", but that may very well be that I just used my same entry from my "formal" blog. Haha! Enjoy! AVINA is a Latin American organization, whose mission is to contribute to sustainable development, encouraging the building of ties of trust and fruitful partnerships between business and social leaders, and articulating agendas for action. Thursday, September 10: A group of 15 celebrated "Santiago's" (Harry/Jaime/James) birthday. We went to dinner in Plaza Santa Ana, which, by the way, it is NOT common to go out in a group larger than like 6 here in Madrid. I shared paella with 2 other people. It was DELICIOUS! It even looked pretty when the waiter brought it. After, we found this cool club, and ended the night at a bar. Friday, September 11: I went to buy my ticket for the bull fight on Sunday Sept. 13. On the bus on the way there, I met a husband and wife that live in my neighborhood. They were telling me that they have the head of a bull hanging in their house, because he was a matador a long time ago. Direct quote from the ... read more
