Madrid Ok, I’ll confess right now…. I made a bit of a mistake about the weather. Its wonderfully hot in Madrid - after Ireland being unusually hot. A bit hot for Lucy. Sarah and Kate have bought 3 summer dresses between them (one each and a third Ken said they could have if they’d share it). Don’t even need cardy’s in the evenings and I have a suitcase full of them (lots of layers, merino singlets and cardy’s, bla, bla bla). Have told the girls that I think we’ll go shopping in Granada for a few more summer clothes. Lucy now has a glorious red and black flamenco dress with matching shoes ( a perfect match to her lady bug Sarah) - but neither summery nor “real clothes”. Madrid has been wonderful, but very busy. There ... read more

Northern Ireland Northern Ireland was a bit different. No more dolls houses (odd, large rectangular houses, very symmetrical that look exactly like a dolls house on a piece of flat land - everywhere in the area of Ireland we drove in). Stopped by armed Police at the entry (via a back route) to Omagh and had to show Ken’s passport. The Police stations in all the towns we saw were large and well protected (fences, barbed wire etc). Great little B&B. Visited the Ulster Folk Park (really good with people in each little house telling about life “in the olden days”. Drove to the Giants Causeway the next for a walk with lots of other tourists then on to Derry. No one wanting to see anything in particular - except I wanted to see the murals ... read more

Ok, Finally a bit more blog. I wrote it between madrid and Granada but couldn't put it on as I didn't have access with the laptop. Ken has sorted lots more photos so I'll put them in too.... Seems ages since I’ve written anything. Has been a really busy time in Spain. We’re now on a train from Madrid to Granada. The train is great. Lucy has an entire collection of Littlest pet Shop animals having a party next to me, Ken is reading the e-book and Sarah and Kate are reading. Far easier than driving - although Ken had been keen to drive for awhile. Anyway, back to Ireland. Seems like an age ago, can’t believe that its only 5 days since we left. Had a fairly quiet last week in Birr but with a ... read more

Hi from Granada. We arrived last night on the train from Madrid. Typed up some blog on the train about the end of Ireland and Madrid (great art) but now need to find wifi access to send it. Anyway Granada is lovely. a bit cooler than Madrid - thank goodness, my big mistake of the trip being that I expected Autumn and what we have had so far I would consider to be an incredibly good summer. Have a garden which is nice and close to markets. Out now in search of gin and tonic since we have a laden lime tree in the garden. Having a couple of quiete days after doing lots in Madrid. ... read more

Hi all, I'm still getting used to the blog, so thanks for the messages and comments - some of which I've only just found. We're in Omagh in Northern Ireland now. Drove away from our lovely Castle and are now in a B&B for 2 nights. Went to a great Folk Park this afternoon here with lots of dressed up people to tell us about which really makes a difference. Tomorrow a big day heading up to the Giants Causeway and then derry (thanks Renate - we hope). Monday drive to Dublin then fly to Madrid. Will update on the last few days, or rater nights in Birr - had a great time, later. I'm going to attempt to add more photos now.......... read more

Amazing what constitutes luxury. Today luxuury is sitting in a lovely library at a real PC with a real office chair, table and mouse and typing at the same time as Sarah (rather than each patiently and politely waiting for each other...). I have just discovered a little cluster of comments on the blog - oops sorry, didn't notice them before (getting the habit of rapidly copying emails to the C drive, pasting replies to previous emails and pasting in the blog text. Photos have been more tricky but I think I have a better way - will try next time I take 'little' (the laptop) to the hotel, not convinced Ken will be thrilled with the Kempo photos I pasted of him!) Kaen and Lucy are wandering in the castle grounds and Kate was last ... read more

Birr, Ireland part 2 Well, it is Sunday evening and I’m sitting here at 6pm outside with a glass of wine funally getting around to typing something up to put on the blog. Dinner is in the oven (I’m feeling very domesticated here, as is Lucy who has made 2 batches of muffins since we arrived). The weather is unusually warm and sunny. Ken had a massage yesterday from a sports physio who said the weather is the best they’ve had in years. I’ve no real idea on the best way to do this blog. Will do it day by day for the last week as we’ve done so much, probably wont always. Girls all relaxing into the trip. Bit of texting going on to friends at home and Sarah is always keen to check and ... read more

Birr, Ireland I’m typing this in our cottage in Birr, Ireland. We have no internet access here but I’m hoping to get wi-fi access from a hotel in town to send this. Ken and the girls are playing cards in the next room. We’re in a lovely little, old cottage in the grounds of a castle which is still lived in by the same family who have had it for 14 generations. The grounds are extensive and open to the public. Ken has been for a long walk both mornings and Lucy and I went for a walk this morning (and a fairy hunt, according to Lucy this is perfect fairy territory). So far Ireland is green, peaceful and a bit wet. A grey day yesterday but we went for a drive and found a castle ... read more
