Small World
Yes, indeed it can! Funny how things work out sometimes. Your travel pics and blogs look and sound amazing. Doesn't seem real does it in some ways. Take care, hope to hear from you soon.

Aye
I felt the same when there. I got the distinct feeling that Historians spent more time on the Coca tea than doing any proper research.

That train
We wondered why that train was so expensive and was so slow too. We found out it's because it's the Orient Express. Quite litterally. The same carriages, same service but nowhere near the Orient. Very odd, but surprisingly fitting for querky Peru.

Hello Dave. Glad you like reading them, makes it worthwhile writing them. It's interesting you say there is an explanation of the building techniques at Sillustani, a place I was trying to get to but ran out of time unfortunately. In all the readings and documentaries about these stones they've always offered theories but no evidence, just conjecture. I'll have to find some writings about Sillustani, I can't believe no-one has joined the dots in a general way about the Inca techniques here, astounding. Thanks for encouraging me to go to the Uros islands too, I was really hesitant about this, but it was a great trip in the end. All the best fella.

Ancient Tech
Hey - really enjoying the blogs - and you're writing style is great to read. I agree with what you say about the Incas technical achievements. And what astounds me is they did it all, everything, in less than 100 years. Also, it's not too much of a mystery about how they did it. In Silistani, near Puno there are a whole load of unfinished towers. They've literally downed tools as the Spanish arrived. And you can see how they did everything. How they assembled the ramps, rough cut the stones, laid them out in order, carved noggins on the stones and then cut them off when in place... it's all there - minus the builders bum.

Thanks Dave, that meant so much to me. You write these things in hope that they strike a chord out there, and it's really nice to know that they have. The vulture was fine by the way, it was just Alexander gently trying to stop it eating my cardigan.

How do you do it
Reading your blog Rob is so rewarding, today you have brought me to tears. Your relationship with Jess is to be admired. You are both lucky to have eachother, the way you discribed watching Jess feed the animals like that small girl not so many years ago, realy did bring a tear to my eye. As a father of two girls, who are growing up so so fast, i do see that, i know what you you have seen, and its great to see that you have done a great job. ps Do not poke a Volture with a stick, he just might not forget it!!!

I know what you mean! That's why I'd rather spend money on a trip than on stuff for the house. I'm jealous (but a healthy jealous!). Best wishes.

Hello again Chalaca68, I couldn't agree more. It's not something I expected, or at least not to this degree, but you are dead right. This trip has already changed our lives forever, and we're not even halfway through. Quite were I go from here I do not know, but I've a feeling it might well involve me spending every spare penny on new travel experiences ... travelling makes you feel so, so very alive.

Hi Chalaca68, Sure it occurred to me that this was going to be a hellish walk back out, but I just didn't comprehend quite how much until it was right in front of me. I was offered a mule the night before the trek back out, but as I'd heard no talk of anyone else using one, I wasn't going to be the only pussy who said yes. To be fair, most people trekked back out and only a handful used the mules. But, most of those that trekked out were far younger than me and for them is was quite a bit easier. Hard as it was, and it was very hard, the feelings it left me with were priceless.

Travel, when it challenges you and presents you with one of a kind experiences, I believe, changes something inside of you. The realization may come immediately or it may take some time to process. That's why travel can be so addictive. Glad to see that you and your daughter are having a wonderful trip.

Great story
I was wondering, while reading through your tales as you were going farther and farther down into the canyon, how are you going to go back up? I can picture the scene, you fighting the trail and your travel mates riding the mules, waving hello as they passed. Bummer! Nobody had told you you could get a mule to go back up? I've never been to the canyon, but if I ever go, I'll remember to ride a mule on the way up. Sounds like the canyon trip was wonderful, though. Great stories!

Hi there chalaca68. I think you're most probably right in what you say. We had a bad day that day for a number of reasons, and didn't have the time to give Lima a chance to show us another side of its character. It was what is was though, and I have to write it that way. But you should see from other entries I have written that I have fallen in love with your beautiful country. So if Lima didn't impress me, the rest of Peru most certainly has.

Yes, under different circumstances...
I looked up the place you stayed at and it's smack in the middle of one of the nightlife areas of Miraflores. The hostel didn't look that great anyway. Believe me, there's better places to stay (condos) that won't break the bank, especially if you can split the cost with other travelers. It sounds like you were in Lima for only one day/night and spent it all in Miraflores next door to a club. The problem with most visitors to Peru is that they can get tons of info on Cuzco, Machu Picchu, Puno, Mancora, etc., etc., but there isn't really a good guide/source of info for people who stop in Lima, whether it be for a day or two or more. So, yea, sorry you didn't get to enjoy the place as much as you could have. There's lots of historic places, museums, and attractions to visit. Too bad you didn't get to try the great food either. If the same guide who took you to the hostel, pointed you to restaurants, forget it!

Yeah, Phil commented on the beard yesterday too. It's the law to grow a beard when you're travelling fella, all the guide books say so. I'll lose it when I get bored of it, it's still a novelty for now though. And yes, Jess is leaving me well behind in the trekking stakes, but then she is 20 years younger than me, so I don't mind too much. It's when the over 60s overtake me that I tend to get a little embarassed =-(

Thank you
Hi Andrew (and wife). Thank you for your words, I'm glad my blog has been helpful to you. To be honest, although I initially thought keeping a blog would be a bind when I just wanted to enjoy the journey, I actually find it quite helpful, reflecting on the day and not just concentrating on the next before I've even gone to bed. It makes the journey better somehow. We're still travelling ourselves for another couple of months, through Peru and Bolivia before heading back to Ecuador for a short stay and the flight home, so feel free to keep reading =-)

Sunset
I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a sunset that nice either. The speed at which it set was just rediculously quick too.
