Just got back from midsemester break and it was the most amazing 2 weeks of my life! I spent the first 5 days at Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef. It was so gorgeous! Heron Island is a tiny island on the southern part of the reef, so small that there’s only room for the University of Queensland Research Station and a resort. We had to take an 8 hour bus ride overnight from Brisbane to Gladstone and then a 2 hour super bumpy ferry ride to get to the island so I was quite tired when we got there but we went straight into the water for a snorkel near the shore of the island. We spent so much time in the water, snorkelling around the island and took 2 boat rides to snorkel ... read more

Hello everyone! Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve blogged, I just finished mid-semester exams and assessments. In the past week I’ve written 2 essays, 1 report, a presentation and taken a test. It was a rough week but now I’m on mid-semester break!! I leave tonight for a trip to Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef with the Marine Biology Class I’m in. I’ll be on the island for 5 days and then I’m going to Cairns for 5 more days. So stay tuned for that post, I promise I’ll write after I get back from my trips!! Since the last time I wrote, I have taken a trip to Moreton Bay on Stradbroke Island. The trip was another field trip with the Marine Biology class I am in and it was a great ... read more

G’day mates! I just finished week 3 of classes and have a lot to report! Also, if you haven’t already noticed, I’m going to try to integrate aussie slang into this blog post as much as possible, just to keep things interesting. It’s going to be heaps of fun! So basically, the way classes work here is that most students take 3-4 classes to be a full time uni (no one says university here and college is the place I’m living, so if you have class you say “I’m off to uni) student. Because of WashU study abroad requirements, I have to take 5 classes, but I actually worked out a good schedule so I only have uni 4 days a week and only for 2 hours on Monday and Thursday. The classes I’m taking are: ... read more

Sorry it has taken me so long to post. I had an entire entry finished about Orientation Week but when I went to post it my internet messed up and it got deleted. I got frustrated and gave up, but now I’m back to write O week entry 2.0 Fresher Pretzel has officially survived Orientation Week. Just kidding, it really wasn't that bad they didn't haze us that much. Because this is my first semester at Emmanuel College, I am considered a first year or "fresher" and I was given the nickname Pretzel. No one really knows where the nickname came from, the Emmanuel execs assign them before we get here and then we are given a plastic yellow hard hat with our nicknames written on them and required to wear them at all times during ... read more

Hello! Greetings from Brisbane! I am finally settled in at University of Queensland and have a free moment to write. To keep things interesting I’m going to talk about my trip to Sydney in this entry and write about UQ and Brisbane next time. We are just starting orientation week so I will have plenty to talk about next time—stay tuned! The flight to Sydney actually wasn’t that bad, although I did have the middle seat for the entire 14 hour ride. I slept for most the time and watched two movies and before I knew it I was in the beautiful land of Oz! It took me 3 days to figure out why Australia is called Oz, it’s because when you say Aussie with an Australian accent it sounds like Ozzie. So when we first ... read more

Hello! So I feel like I shouldn't have to introduce myself or anything because the only people that should be reading this blog are people that know me and why I'm writing this blog, but I've never written or even read a blog before so I don't know proper blogging etiquette. Well, here it goes: My name is Christine Weingarten and I am a junior at Washington University in St. Louis spending a semester abroad studying anthropology at University of Queensland. After an almost 2 month long winter break, I'm finally starting to realize that I will actually be leaving for Australia in TWO DAYS and I figured I had better get this blog going otherwise it would never happen. I have been so lucky to have been able to work with Marbles: The Brain Store ... read more
