Monday, Feb 4 -Friday Feb 8 I danced tango every night at a different milonga and had a wonderful time. I went out to dinner several times, mostly in the Balvenera Area. I took 2 tango lessons, one with each of the Luis’s. Gave several English lessons to Luis M. (tango teacher) & Tota (housekeeper). It was a very relaxing week -- just living in Buenos Aires. Sat, Feb 9 On my way to Bariloche in the south for a two week stay. I arrived at the bus station in Buenos Aires (Retiro) at 2:00 for my bus to Bariloche which was leaving at 3:00. Luis gave me a ride. I waited and had a coffee at the bus station and while I was there I was robbed. Because I was alone I didn’t see two ... read more

Sun, Feb 4 Lesley and I spent the day at la Costanera Sur, a park and ecological preserve at the edge of the river. The history of this place is interesting - it is built on land that was filled for development in the 1970s, but apparently the project got derailed. http://www.buenosaires.gov.ar/areas/med_ambiente/reserva/?menu_id=2486 It was rather hot and crowded, but the birds were amazing. There are more than 200 species of birds in the park, and I was fascinated. I even bought a book so I could identify some of the species I saw. A few whose names I figured out were the Cotorro (a type of parrot), the Cisne Cuello Negro (black necked swan), Cauquen Commun (a type of goose), and the Benteveo Comun. http://www.avesargentinas.org.ar/cs/index.php There were tons of parades for Carnaval as we were trying ... read more

Sat, Feb 3 I spent the day shoe shopping and got a pair of tango shoes to wear for practicing. Lesley and I had a wonderful tango lesson with Humberto Pouchulú, “El Puchu,” who teaches classes sometimes at La Casa Maria Tango. He is a professional dancer and beautiful to watch. He is more well known as a folk dancer since he only took up the tango a few years ago, but he is an amazing dancer. Here is a Youtube video of him dancing la Zamba (a folk dance): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=333Sr3aDOBA and the Tango: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuvXRKSfk_c Later we went to “El Arranque” for the afternoon milonga (which lasts until 9:30!). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc8p2CXYsPY We then had dinner and tried to find some Cuban Salsa dancing with no success. So we came home and went to bed around 12:00 (an ... read more

Friday, Feb 1 I was going to meet a woman from Phoenix who I’d sat next to on the plane named Jeanne. She and I had planned to go to El Tigre - we were to meet in the train station, Retiro, at 10:00 am. I arrived at 10:00 and waited and waited. By 10:45, I got tired of waiting and decided to just go on by myself. Apparently, she showed up a few minutes after I left. Time in Argentina is much slower and more flexible than time in the U.S. If people say 4:00, it could be 5:00 or 5:30 and no one gives it a second thought. The commuter train to El Tigre takes about 45 minutes and it was a comfortable train, although interesting that people get on to play music or ... read more

Jan 31 - Spent the day getting oriented in Buenos Aires, one of the largest and most important cities in South America. About 1/3 of the country's 36 million people live in "gran Buenos Aires" that is the city and its surrounding area. I went exploring with someone I met here named Lesley (from England). The nice thing about Maria Teresa's Tango House is that it's full of interesting people from all over the world, most of whom love to dance. Many languages are spoken, but we usually default to Spanish because it's the one language we all have in common. Lesley and I decided to figure out the subway (El Subte), which began operation in 1913. It is still being expanded today as you can see on the official web page. http://www.sbase.com.ar/inicio.asp We caught the ... read more

Jan 29 - I left from Seattle, changed planes in Houston, and arrived the next day in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Luis “Cacho,” my tango teacher here last year, met me at the airport. It was great to see a familiar face in the enormous crowd of people at the airport after my overnight flight. I left Seattle in mid-winter and of course here it is mid summer, so it was a bit of a shock to my system. It’s about 30 minutes to drive from the airport to town. I’m staying at the “Casa Maria Tango” http://www.mariatango.com.ar/ a bed and breakfast that (not surprisingly) focuses on the tango. There is a dance floor in the house and teachers come every day to give private or semi-private lessons. There’s also a kitchen, breakfast is provided and there’s ... read more
