Back down the bottom of the hill at Ping An, near Long Sheng, I boarded a minivan for Guilin, which happily deposited me at the train station, where I knew a couple of value hotels were located. (I actually ended up in a slightly more upmarket one, The Cairns hotel, for 206RMB. Still pretty cheap and a lovely room. It’s so nice to be in a room where few things are broken, and with a bit more space!) I didn’t do any sight seeing in Guilin, but just wandered around looking for a restaurant. There were plenty of people selling fruits on the footpath, including freshly cut watermelon. I love that sort of watermelon. It was only 1RMB for a big slice, so I had several! Later, when in some other tropical places in China, such ... read more

After the horrible early start (got up at 5:20AM) in Huai Hua I got on the train. Hard seat carriages have 3 person seats on one side and 2 person seats on the other. Every single 3 person seat was taken up by a person lying down sleeping, so that left only the 2 person seats. They were nearly all taken, but I found one with a working window. The first 2 hours were nice enough. Then a few people left and I grabbed a 3 person seat and tried to have a nap for another hour. I checked my map and realised that this train actually went pretty close to a place called LongSheng, the gateway to the ‘Devil’s Backbone Rice Terraces’, a place I wanted to see. So I got off the train after ... read more

Monday 5 Sep ----------------------- I arranged to leave most of my belongings at the hostel while I went for a 2 day trip to ‘Tiger Leaping Gorge’ – reputed to be one of the deepest (or the deepest) gorges on Earth. This is about 2.5 hours by bus up in the mountains from Lijiang. We got there about 10:30AM, and started walking. My goal was about 4 to 6 hours of walking the first day to get to a nice guesthouse for the night. After a nice start through lovely fields of corn and sunflowers, and walking with some Chinese and German people, the track started heading uphill, and it started getting pretty hard work. It might have been the altitude but I wasn’t doing very well. It was also pretty warm. After maybe 2 hours ... read more

So that was the end of our cruise – the bus took us into Yichang city bus station, from where I caught a taxi to the train station, and got a ‘hard seat’ seat to Jishou down in Hunan province. From there I wanted to get to a picturesque river side town called FengHuang. Unfortunately I had some bad news at this point. While on the ship I had photocopied the Hunan chapter of Lonely Planet’s China from my dutch fellow passengers. When I looked in my bag it wasn’t there. I think my room-mate might have picked it up by mistake when he checked out. This meant I didn’t know the names or numbers of any hostels in Jishou or FengHuang. Plus didn’t have any info of what to see or do there. I wasn’t ... read more

Wednesday 7 ============ I had a flight booked for 5:20PM to Chongqiang, and didn’t have much to do in the day. I chatted to 3 Chinese girls and a guy staying in the hostel. They were very friendly. At one point they went and got a whole heap of food and invited me to join them. The airport is 30km out of town. Flight was an hour late. I arrived in Chongqing 7:30, then had an ‘interesting’ ride into town. Firstly the roads looked positively first world. Big wide motorways, long tunnels, everything clean. But the taxi driver was terrible, blowing his horn, cutting people off etc. He wasn’t sure of the way to the hostel, fortunately I had the number, and he rang them to get directions. In the end I spotted the hostel first. ... read more

Kunming - LiJiang

Friday Sept 2 ============== Had an easy trip to Kunming in Southern China. It was interesting to see the mighty Mekhong river from the air, as we crossed from Thailand into Laos - it must be about a kilometre across. Well before we got to Kunming I noticed that there was a lot of smog in the air, and it is indeed pretty bad once on the ground. After checking into the Camellia Hotel (200Y = about $US35), I set out to get a SIM card for my phone. In Thailand that would be really easy, but here it turned out to be much more laborious. I had to walk for 20 minutes to find the right shop - I was told to go to a post office - when I got there I waited 20 ... read more

Wednesday 31 Aug ================ I caught a taxi to Phuket airport, then caught plane to Bangkok, arriving at the old airport at Don Meuang (rather than the new airport 'Suvannaphum'). Had a look around Sukhumwit rd in Bangkok - had trouble recognising many locations are there are so many new tall buildings there blocking old views. Thursday 1 Sep ============== I caught the 'sky train' over to the King Taksin bridge on the Chao Phraya river then caught a tourist boat up to the pier near the Grand Palace. that was a good and interesting little trip. I walked over to the Grand Palace - i wasn't intending to go in - I've seen it before - what I really wanted to check out was the touts who are reputed to infest the area, tricking tourists ... read more

Monday August 22 ====== My plane left Bali at 12:30, I was at the airport far too early, and had a very long wait. On the other hand the taxi driver told me that the week before there had been a huge traffic jam, and it had taken 2 hours to get from Sanur to the airport (which should be a 20 to 30 minute trip). So better too early than too late. Arrived in Phuket, and had a very easy trip through immigration, and then set out to find the metered taxis. I inquired at a taxi counter and they pretended not to know where the metered taxis are - trying to get me to take their overpriced service. I really hate that. I know there are metered taxis, I am not going to use ... read more

Friday Aug 19 ============= Another early start. Riding the bike from Sanur to Kuta at 6 in the morning is very easy. But by the time we are driving the van down to Jimbaran at 7, roads are already getting very busy. Today the surf was smaller and a bit cleaner than yesterday, making it a lot easier - I got lots of waves, and some nice rides. (Got plenty of compliments from the teachers and other students!) Pro-surf school seems a good place to me. Everyone is very friendly. The place has a great location, has a restaurant, good pool, rooms etc. I often stuck around and had drinks and meals with the other students (most of whom were a good deal younger than me!) Saturday Aug 20 =============== I knew Kuta's surf would still ... read more

August 18th 2011

This morning had early start. Left hotel at 6AM, to get to the surf shop by 6:30. The crew were there loading up the vans with heaps of surfboards. When I got there at 6:20 they seemed to have all the boards loaded. At 6:55AM it was still chaos as they were loading and unloading boards and stuffing around :-) Even at 7AM the roads were pretty full of traffic, and it was no easy journey to Jimbaran. When we got there we parked along with 10 other vans in an impossibly narrow lane way, unloaded, changed and got to the beach. Surf was a bit messy compared with beautiful clean Kuta on Monday, and it was hard work paddling out, and very tricky getting in position to catch a wave. fortunately my day was made ... read more
