yummy!
This looks so delicious I will be trying it myself! More recipe blogs please! Much better than a cookery book!
1st June 2012

My heart and stomach feel like they're in the company of fellow foodies -- what a wonderful feeling. I promise there are more recipes to come. ;)

Love it, love it, love it!
Being a foody this was wonderful to read.

Experiences such as this are one reason why you gain so much more by living in a foreign country, as opposed to simply passing through as a tourist. Beautifully written Michelle :-)

Jo: It's funny that what you say is true. There are some depths of a country or culture that can only be experienced with time. I must sadly confess however that I tend to be in a bubble wherever I live and jump out of the bubble when I travel, meaning there are too many places left undiscovered and unventured in the places I've called "home." This is something that must be remedied with our next place of residence. ;]

Now I am jealous......
Hey Michelle, thanks for the recipes. Much as I love Chinese food I could definitely do with a bit of southern Asian cuisine. Cheers. Brett P.S. What's the plan for next year? I heard you're heading back home to the states!
30th May 2012

Brett: I'm always down for recipe-swapping if you've learned any good Chinese dishes with all the time you've spent over there. I'll be in the States next month. It'll be great to see family and friends as it's been about a year-and-a-half since I've last seen some of them.

Squids
I have a little trouble relating to your feelings about charming school of squid, since swarms of the creatures have virtually eliminated all other life in the Sea of Cortez. I watched a documentary about searching for a giant squid. Part of the procedure involved using a smaller squid as bait, since they are cannibals. I was surprised at how voracious they were. Even the human divers had to be careful. Love your pictures though.

Ahhh~ those are probably the Humboldt squids you are talking about. Now they are terrifying and I don't ever want to run into those swarms. Their speed and fast spreading populations are very scary, though. The good news is that they tend to be deep water creatures that only come up in specific regions when the evening draws near. The ones I saw, I believe, were just regular old squids. :)

Glad you enjoyed Tangkoko
Great place isnt it - I fell in love with the Yaki :) Happy travels look forward to your next blog :)
26th April 2012

Cindy: Agreed. Sualwesi is just a fascinating place that needs more than a few visits. Thanks so much for your comment. I would have loved to see the Yaki closer up. Their faces seem to be the most fascinating, though you could argue the red butt is more eye-catching. Har har~

The more tarsiers the better!
Thank you so much for posting these photos, my appetite for images of tarsiers is never satiated as they are one of my favourite animals in the world.
26th April 2012

Shane: Agreed. I definitely plan on seeing them again, maybe in the Philippines the next time around.

WONDERFUL ADVENTURE
Into the jungle...so intent on finding those midget primates...avoiding webs, thorns...but no mention of insects...your photos of the tarsiers...very special.
26th April 2012

Dave: True! I didn't suffer from any mosquito bites (though that may be due to dousing my skin with repellent), ran into no spider webs (though Eto wrapped up and destroyed a couple with his branch), and no large red ants. However, there were some bizarre red insects that looked like they were in red cocoons and lined the side of a tree. My picture of it was far too blurry and I had no further notes written in my notebook, so I left it unshared. There were also the crickets, however, Eto brought them, so I don't think they count. Maybe the tarsiers ate all the rest?! ;]

BREATHLESS IN BUNAKEN

I can only hope to go on another underwater journey sooner rather than later, so I can share more! If you like this one, you should check out [blogger=51678]. I just spotted her underwater photos today and was blown away. Such great bloggers out there.

Great photographs!
Have you invested in a new camera by any chance - you've previously mentioned your desire to purchase one. There are some really good photographs here - I particularly like the black, white and pink lobster.
12th April 2012

Shane: Thanks for the comment! This was a new camera I splurged on in Singapore Airport in October 2010. Alas, I never found a remedy for the leaky housing, so I haven't taken any more underwater photos since this trip. I hope I can justify another splurge down the line because I'd love to sharpen my underwater photos.

Re: turquoise triggerfish
Those seem like mean fish! ''I'm pretty calm around sharks...'' And, those dont exactly look friendly either. I think, it is something to do with the eyes. One of the kids at Lydias school has eyes like that, and he scares the hell out of me, even though he never says anything.
