Geo: 31.23, 121.47To arrive in Shanghai at night is to be welcomed by a spectacular display of light and colour. The hour long ride in from the airport was an infinite freeway lined either side by ghostly highrise but then you hit the CBD and the motorway becomes a multi storey monolith that snakes towards and around a city skyline like no other. It felt like we were on a giant life size Disneyland ride. The view from our hotel room was equally inspiring and as the sun rose we could see the city take shape. The blur of the bright orange pollution sky making way to clearer shapes of the riverside lowrise dwarfed by the assortment of the ultramodern, all vying for the title of the tallest building. What a show. Welcome to Shanghai! Our overall ... read more

Africa » Mauritius June 3rd 2009

Geo: -20.2554, 57.5517Upon returning to Mauritius we were once again surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches and azure seas. We could watch and listen as the waves gently rolled in over the distant reefs. The skies were sunny and blue and the balmy evenings were a pleasant change from the chill of the autumn nights in Southern and Central Africa. We were amused by the friendly locals, their warm smiles and their easy going nature.Having driven around some of the island we found it to be a little larger than we first anticipated. The coastline that we saw was mostly undulating so that the majority of it appeared suitable for residential dwellings. Many homes, guest houses, hotels and resorts had their own private beaches. The interior was a mix of sugar cane fields and high craggy ... read more

Geo: -15.3982, 28.2937 Reluctant to leave once again we set off on the next part of our journey after three days at Kasane. After a short drive we were at the river crossing ready to board a small boat to the opposite side which was Zambia. On the other side of the fence was Zimbabwe and just across the river further downsteam was Namibia. This was the main freight route north through Zambia and onward up to the Congo. There were trucks queued for miles down the road waiting to board the ferry, corssing the river one at a time. Just inside the Zambian border was a chaotic mix of truck drivers, tourists, tour buses and hundreds of locals trying to sell wooden and beaded souvenirs from Zimbabwe as well as now disused and useless trillion ... read more

Africa » Botswana » North-West » Maun May 17th 2009

Geo: -19.9964, 23.4168We were up before sunrise the next day for our short but early flight to Maun. Although it was an international flight we were a little surprised to find ourselves on a sixteen seater twin propeller plane with the co pilot handing our meal to us as we boarded up the stairs. Obviously no cocktails would be served on this flight! The advantage was however that we flew at a lower altitude and could easily see the ground below and watch as the landscape changed from desert to delta. The town of Maun was about the same size as Mareeba. Mostly consisting of shops, banks, travel agents and a handful of restaurants. With the odd donkey and chicken wandering around it appeared a lot less westernised than any of the towns in Namibia. Once ... read more

Geo: -22.5648, 17.0931We arrived back in Cape Town quite late and only managed a few hours sleep before we needed to be on the road and making our way to the airport for an early flight. Not that we needed to have bothered as the flight was delayed for three hours due to fog. So we bided our time, ate a big breakfast courtesy of South African airways and eventually made it to Windhoek by mid afternoon. Our guest house at Windhoek was another pleasant surprise. Although only a small property they managed to provide pretty much everything a person could want to feel relaxed and at home. Everything from the rooms to the small gardens was made to be very pleasing to the eye. We were happy to chill out on the veranda for a ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town April 30th 2009

Geo: -30.5595, 22.9375Had a bit of a look around Cape Town. Visited the botanic gardens and wandered through the collections of proteas, fynbos, cycads and succulens dwarfed beneath the majestic Table Mountain. Took in the atmosphere of the V&A waterfront. Must be the world's largest of its kind. An amazing array of shops, restaurants, street entertainers, markets and marinas. The sun finally came out and warmed us as we strolled around. Also took a short drive out to the Stellenbosch winery area to see a bit of the countryside. An interesting mix of the haves and the have nots, mansions on one side of the road and tin shacks on the other. Landscapes of gum trees and dry grasses, reminding us of country Victoria, dotted with English style terrace housing. As Andrew said "Africa doesn't look ... read more

Africa » Mauritius April 29th 2009

Geo: -20.2554, 57.5517We survived the arduous plane journey but were still a bit the worse for wear. Were pleasantly suprised upon arrival in Mauritius. The guest house I booked was literally right on the water, just a rock wall between our room and the Indian Ocean. From our bright and breezy room we could see fishing boats moored in the bay, several islands, a lighthouse and surf breaks rolling over distant reefs. In the morning from the breakfast room we watched as the fisherman rowed their boats towards the rising sun. Our hosts at the guest house were happy and friendly as were the people we passed in the town, many of them greeting us with a "Bonjour" and a smile. The people were very beautiful to look at and many of the women stunning. The ... read more

Geo: 22.33, 114.18Our journey home was via a three day stopover in Hong Kong. We arrived at the airport from a 12 hour overnight flight, which followed an energetic day in Barcelona finding the GP circuit and working out the best way to watch the free practice. We were greeted with the news that Andrew's bag had not made it. Very bad timing since what we wanted so desperatley, apart from sleep, was to shower and change our clothes. So my first mission after doing that at our hotel was to go out and buy Andrew a new set of clothes, after very little sleep in a strange country. Turned out to be relatively easy considering the circumstances and we actually managed to enjoy a very nice meal in a nearby restaurant before catching up on ... read more
