Today has been a bittersweet day. It was a day of once again saying goodbye to those we've come to love. We promise to come back and visit in 6 months, but I admit there's always that little thought in the back of my mind that worries 'what if something happens and we aren't able to?'. We started our morning after breakfast by going down to Kelly's house. We helped the nanny in the first room feed breakfast to the little ones in there. I fed bottles Eswin and Mimi while Mama got to feed one to Maria, who was really the one she went to see. Cristel was the only one in the room to get to sit in a high chair, but we laughed at how she put her legs up on the tray, ... read more

One of the hardest things about being in Guatemala is trying to figure out where to best give. You are surrounded by need, and if you're like me you just want to give and give and give. That's not always the best thing, not only for the person we are wanting to help, but for the people who follow behind us. What we do might set an example or precedent for an entire community or village, so we have to be stragetic in what we do, even when it breaks our heart or makes us feel heartless to turn away sometimes. The other side of that is that sometimes the things people choose to do might not make sense at first glance. I mean sure, it makes sense that we took much needed towels and bottles ... read more

Today has been a much more slow day compared to our usual packed full days here at HOL. We began by having a traditional Guatemalan breakfast of tamales and hot chololate. I can't say I was a big fan of either, but I did finish everything, which is more than I can say for my 3 traveling partners who didn't even try the tamales! (We'll excuse mama for not trying them- she hasn't felt well today, and they smelled worse than they tasted. The other 2 were just plain chicken!) I'll admit that the main reason I ate them was because I heard the ladies yesterday talking about how hard they were to make, and I felt really guilty that these ladies were giving up their Christmas with their families to fix our meals, and to ... read more

Psalm 113:7-8 "He will lift the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He will set them among princes, even the princes of His own people."That's the verse that always runs through my mind on the days that we visit the garbage dump and help at the feeding station. I found that verse right before our very first trip to Guatemala two years ago and love the hope that it brings when thinking of the people we meet in these dire circumstances. The poverty that we experience is unimagainable unless you've been here and experienced it firsthand. Imagine kids running around among broken glass and dead bloated animals, breathing in the fumes from the smoke of the constantly burning fires, being served a meal on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Many live right ... read more

Today we started by sorting and getting bags ready to be delivered to the places here on the Hope of Life compound. We were trying to make sure they had items in them to match where they were going, and to make sure the girl bags had girl items and the boy bags had boy items. One of the boys on campus, Carlos, the son of one of the workers, remembered us right away, greeting Chrissy by name. When he came over to me he immediately asked about Austin. He also asked about Caleb, who has been with us from the FWC group for the past two summers. He was a big help in preparing the bags. After we finished we went to Kelly's House, the special needs home to deliver the Hope sacks for the ... read more

Today we spent most of our day helping hand out Christmas Hope Sacks in 3 separate villages in Guatemala. First we spent time at the warehouse loading around 500 bags into the back of the bus, then we were off to Paso Del Creedo, which was in Chiquimula. As we got closer, I thought it looked familiar, and as we arrived, it was a village we visited with FWC on our first trip to HOL. I remembered it because of the steep hill the school sat on, and the way they got their water from a hole dug right beside the river thinking that made it safe to drink. There are pigs that wander all over the village, and you have to watch your step! As we waited for the leader to arrive, we were able ... read more

Today ended up being a day of waiting around, more than we anticipated. We began our day with a wonderful breakfast buffet at 8:00. The Barcelo Hotel where we stayed was beautiful. It was probably about the nicest place I've ever stayed, and quite took us by surprise. We were ready to leave, with our huge mountain of luggage at 9:00. Around 9:20 or so we found out because of circumstances our ride would not arrive for about another two hours. So I'm anxiously waiting to see my babies and Cristina, and now I have to wait even more! Everyone took advantage of the time with facebook, and I read a book that I brought- after I dug it out of the suitcase, and of course it was in the one on the very bottom. We ... read more

Our travel day finally arrived. After months of planning and days (OK, maybe weeks) of packing we actually loaded up and headed to the airport. For the weekend before Christmas things couldn't have gone any more smoothly. We sailed right through everything, even being selected for prescreening meaning we didn't have to take our shoes or jackets off or anything. Well, with the exception of Chrissy, who had to go through regular security, but she came through just as quickly as us saying she didn't mind a bit because the guy on security detail was really cute! Both flights were right on time, quite unlike our June flight that was actually cancelled. In Atlanta we got to meet Dulia, a super precious girl from Guatemala and Hope of Life, and she is traveling with us the ... read more

Twas the night before Guatemala, and all through the house, what have I forgotten, what has been left out?!? The bags have been packed, repacked and packed again. I don't think I'll zip them until morning, 'cause I'm sure somethig still needs to go in. Playing Santa in Guatemala will be ever so much fun, but how on earth does he do it all and not leave out someone? Our four bags have grown to more, I'm not quite sure how we'll manage them all, and believe me when I tell you the suitcases are certainly not small. But the joy the things that are inside them will bring. From the toys to the soccer balls and goals, and of course the Christmas bling! Then there are the goodies for the nannies and nurses who work ... read more
