Wednesday 23 February. Well this morning it was 1 degree C (comfort factor -2.8 degrees) until mid-morning (brrrr). This is our excuse for having caramel tarts for breakfast instead of John walking down to the Boulangerie to get something more breakfast-like! Musée du Cluny, aka the Musée National du Moyen Age (museum of the middle ages) was our first stop. It's housed in a medieval mansion, itself built on to the ruins of the Gallo-Roman 'Thermal Baths of Lutetia' (late 1st century). You can go into the 'Frigidarium' (cold bath room) which is used as museum display space. It's quite an experience being in there. The other highlight was the 'Lady with the Unicorn Tapestries'. These were woven in the late 15th century in the southern Netherlands and are extraordinarily beautiful. There are lots of religious ... read more

Tuesday 22 February We thought we'd celebrate John's birthday by going to church (well, for a look anyway)! Saint Eustache church is a hybrid Gothic/Renaissance affair (it took 105 years to build) just down the road from where we're staying. It has been the scene of many historically significant ceremonies such as the communion of Louis XIV, the baptisms of Cardinal Rischelieu and Madame Pompadour and the marriage of the playwright Molière. Next we headed off to the Conciergerie - former royal palace and prison on Ile-de-la-cité. It's most famous for being the prison used by the Revolutionary Tribunal to hold those about to lose their heads(!), including Marie Antoinette and Robespierre. There's even a guillotine blade on display. During the 'reign of terror' (1793-4) more than 2,700 people were despatched by "Madame Guillotine"! We headed ... read more

Monday 21 February 2011 We obviously hadn't shaken off the jet-lag - woke about 3am! Still, it's a good time for catching up on emails, blogs and sorting out photos! After a leisurely breakfast of pain au chocolat (from the boulangerie on the corner) and coffee followed by a dash to the local Monoprix for essential supplies, Monday saw us wandering around the 2nd Arrondissement in search of some of the old shopping passages: Passage des Panoramas, La Galerie Vivienne and Passage Jouffroy (technically, in the 9th Arr.). Apparently, La Gallerie Vivienne was the first shopping area in Paris to be heated in winter and it was the place to be seen. It's been restored and the expensive shops are still there - like the Jean-Paul Gaultier shop, watched over by two rather solid, plain clothed ... read more

Well, it's great to be back in Paris - even though we're both really tired! The flights were uneventful (which is the way we like them!). The only upset was finding out we were flying on a 747 instead of an A380. I was relying on getting some work done during the flight, but didn't take a spare laptop battery because the A380 has laptop power! Ah, c'est la vie! I did get some done - but the biggest problem was simply lack of space. Once the person in front of me pushed their seat back, I was stuffed! So, there was nothing for it but to watch movies! It was foggy in London, so we saw hardly anything flying in or out. Saw even less of the channel - too much cloud. We were rather ... read more
