Leaving Anaheim was difficult in part because we deviated from our mass transient philosophy. The resort park buses left periodically but we decided to get a cab since the cost was actually cheaper. However, it took 45 minutes for the taxi to arrive because of the high demand. By the time we made it to the train station, we had missed the early Amtrak train. 20 minutes later, we sat on a commuter Metrolink train. We met my parents and Jereme at the train station where we hopped into my parent's rental car. We drove to Santa Monica for the afternoon. Santa Monica was breathtaking. If you live or appreciate the West Texas sunset, then you would love the sky here. The blue sky and water meet and seem to be endless. When you turn around, ... read more

As a mom, I always dreamed of taking my kids on a magical trip to Disneyland. I was not disappointed. The hotel in Anaheim was more expensive and smaller, but it still had some great perks. Our hotel gave us a free meal plus a $20 voucher for dining with them. So, after arriving from San Diego via Amtrak and taxi, we pigged out on a surf 'n' turf dinner with all the trimmings, side salad, chips, guacamole, and even apple pie a la mode. Also, as part of our hotel package, the next morning we received 4 sack lunches with huge club sandwiches, chips, and juice for us to take to Disneyland (which saved a lot of money in the park). We also packed drinks for the day. That night, we found out (via Google) ... read more

Why did we choose to spend our Christmas Day in San Diego? Because the zoo is open, of course! (Not just any zoo, but arguably the best zoo in the U.S., if not the world.) Our vacation began with a 3.5 hour 5:50am flight on a regional jet to LAX airport, landing in overcast and rain, then connecting on an even smaller turboprop hop to San Diego. Grace was thrilled that we got to walk out on the 'platform' where planes are (because the turboprop was too small for the gates). Landing in San Diego, the weather was more of the same, and we braved the constant drizzle to our first stop...breakfast...at 11:00am PST. We had been awake 10 hours already and were just getting started. Welcome to traveling with the Wildes! Our itinerary for the ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin September 20th 2012

I think the only reason Jessica agreed to visit Ireland was that we had an overnight layover in Paris. We really didn't know anything about this country, or what we were going to do for 4 days. Looking back, it was probably one of the more interesting, laid back, and friendly places that we have visited. Armed with little more than a general location of our hotel and a couple of popular sights to see the first day, we walked out of the double decker 747 airport express bus. There was hardly a small crowd of people walking around, very few signs written in Gaelic, and a lot of old looking bank buildings - we could have been in Boston except that we were exiting the left side of the bus onto the sidewalk. This was ... read more

For about 1-1/2 years, I have been following various travel blogs discussing not only destinations but also earning and using travel rewards, miles, points, etc. In this time, we have been saving up miles in various frequent flyer programs for a future family trip. At times, it feels like saving for retirement - 24 miles here, 100 miles there - where the end goal is somewhere around 300,000 miles (enough for a family of 5 to travel anywhere off of this continent). I had resigned myself to thinking about a trip in about 5 years, just hoping that we can keep all of our accounts active enough to avoid expiring miles. Well, one good thing about traveling with 3 kids to Europe is that you can rack up about 50,000 miles in a week. After this ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » North Atlantic March 21st 2012

Today started at 5:30am (Paris/Rome time zone) for us, getting ready to head to the airport. Our flight was not until 9:15 and the hotel is only a 5 minute shuttle ride away, but being unfamiliar with the airport and local check-in procedures, it was probably a good idea to give some room for error. The Holiday Inn Express buffet breakfast was satisfying as usual, although they didn't have the customary (in the US at least) cinnamon rolls that melt in your mouth. A quick check of the room, and then we caught the 6:30 shuttle to the airport. The return trip was scheduled slightly longer than the east-bound trip (because of head winds), but more concerning to us was that it is almost entirely in daylight, landing at DFW at 8:00pm on the same day ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome March 20th 2012

On our last day in Rome, we had to check out of our apartment, get to Vatican City for a previously scheduled visit to the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel, then go back to Rome to catch our train back to Milan in the afternoon. In order to fit this schedule in one day with kids, we would have to use the Metro to get to and from Vatican City. This required quite a bit of research last night. First of all, the Metro bus system is very thorough, but very cryptic. There are lots of buses and stops on almost every street in Rome, but because of this, the system map is almost useless, and the website is completely useless (even in English). Secondly, reading travel forums and guides about this tactic, we were warned ... read more

After breakfast in the apartment of bread, Nutella, and eggs; we headed out for our tour of ancient Rome. Our Italian guide book has been hit or miss on our trip, but we followed the advice and bought tickets to all 3 sites (Palantine Hill, the Roman Forum and the colisseum) at Palantine Hill. We were not disappointed--not only did it save us about an hour wait at the colliseum but we were able to tour the other sites as well. As we walked through the Forum and Palantine Hill, we taught the kids about the history of Rome and stopped at each landmark reading the description in our travel book. Unless absolutley necessary, don't bring strollers to these 3 areas. It was very difficult to navigate the stroller over many of the ancient Roman roads ... read more
