I am a journalist travelling with Sue who was in education until we both gave it up to hit the road for a 6 month offbeat tour of SE Asia. Both Brits, we are second stage gappers, crumbling here and there but with enough energy left to sink a Singha or two and endure an 8-hour bus ride in 40c without losing our sense of humour. You have to keep your wits about you in Bangkok, these days.The car is certainly king - as in most of Asia.If you cross the street, you dance your way through lines of charging mopeds and cars.Then there is the crime, which had Sue and me clutching our valuables like we were holding a set of winning lottery tickets every time we ventured outside.And with good case.Three days into our stay in the City of Angels I was reading the Bangkok Post which headlined a tragedy the previous day in which five young people were killed in a single shoot-out and car chase.Two groups of youngsters had been arguing outside a bar when a gun was pulled and shots fired. It needn't have been like this . . . You would have expected more from a man and a woman in their 50s who decided to give up their jobs and to drop everything to tour SE Asia for 6 months. At the very least, you would have expected us to have done some serious planning before leaving quiet Nottingham, UK, and hopping on to an Emirates jet to Bangkok. But we didn't. So here we are. And this is our story . . . Hope you like the title that Sue and I have chosen - Wild1s - for our blog. It has a certain irony for two previously sensible people of a certain age.
