Well, Arequipa wasn't quite over with the Colca Cañon trek. I still had a few hours left in Arequipa, so I decided to meet up with some new friends I had met on the bus for dinner and drinks. When I say friends, I knew a few of the guys, and they told me other friends were coming, so I assumed (stupidly) that it would be a mixed group of guys and girls. When I arrived, I realized I had an awkward harem of like 9 boys and myself. Which is fine, of course, but I'm craving a little female friendship at this point. I don't think I've talked to a woman, other than travel agents, that is, in two solid weeks! Being a giant group of testosterone-driven men, they obviously wanted to set out in ... read more
Well, when I last left you I was enjoying the oasis life in Huacachina, lounging by the sand dunes and drinking a little too much rum. Due to said revelry, God decided I was having entirely too much fun and decided it was time for a good old fashioned smiting... And smite he did. I was horribly sick for about four days, and I actually thought around day three that I might have to go to the hospital. At the risk of venturing into TMI territory, let´s just say that I couldn´t keep anything down and was pretty much living in the bathroom. As if that wasn´t bad enough, another Old Testiment lightning rod hit me and I came down with a cold on top of it all. Needless to say, I wasn´t a happy camper. ... read more
Day 6 (continued) I wanted to leave Pisco-Paracas yesterday, but the nationwide strikes forced me to stay longer than anticipated. In the meantime, I thought I might as well enjoy myself and have a drink or two! After my last update I left the internet cafe and headed to a local establishment in Pisco famous for its pisco sours (apparently they won last year´s contest for Peru´s best pisco!) Apparently, the traditional way to drink pisco is to first take a shot of pisco puro, which is straight pisco without any mixers or chasers. When you´ve finished your shot (which, in all actually ended up being more like four shots) it´s on to the jarrita, or little pitcher, of pisco sour. I also tried a national Peruvian wine called Perfecto Amor, which was horribly saccharine, and ... read more
¡Hola a todos! I apologize for not blogging sooner as promised, but I have either been insanely busy or in a tiny, beachy, internetless area of Peru, so this is my first real opportunity to write about my crazy adventures. It´s been an interesting few days, and I´ll do my best to give you the highlights without narrating my every breath. Here goes. Pre-Peru First off, I missed the memo--it seems that every gringo en route to Peru feels the need to dress exactly the same. So there I was, the only jean'clad chica surrounded by a sea of khaki and green lightweight jungle clothes and safari hats, chuckling at how indiscreet tourists can be. The flight was wonderfully uneventful. I met a nice group of college kids on a mission trip to the Amazon to ... read more
Hi, everyone, I've created this little travel blog to update everyone on my aventuras (aka adventures for all you non-Spanish speakers) in Peru! I'll be flying to South American tomorrow, July 1st, staying four weeks, and returning on the 29th, visiting places as exciting as Lima, Cusco & Machu Picchu, the Nazca lines, Arequipa, the Floating Islands, and the Islas Ballestas while I'm there. Stay tuned for regular updates, photos and fun! I'm sure I'll get into just enough trouble to make for a fascinating read :) Besos, Whit... read more
