Not quite on track
Hi. Just a couple of corrections. Positano is on the Tyrrhenian sea not as you advised. The 'sidewalks' do not turn into stairs, There are paths and stairs. The public beach is just that;' public' you do not pay. Yes there is a part of the beach that you can pay but every beach in Italy must have a 'free beach'. Does there have to be a 'centre'? If you had stayed long enough you would have seen the locals every afternoon walking down the road talking to friends, family etc. On the main road if you sit there long enough, that becomes the centre, many locals spend hours just watching the world go by. As is the case in most of Italy, people do cater for the tourists (which is what you were doing here) but they also carry one much as most people would do in the world. They go to work, earn a salary, pay bills etc. Obviously in a place such as Positano there are going to tourist ( which is what 5 million people do every year: come to Italy) I would suggest that rather than 'doing' one place in a day you take some time to slow down and enjoy what there is, this life is not a rehearsal! bella vita John

not too concerned
You should definitely think more about your comments Milwaukee Mikey. The United States/Americans were this close to being viewed positively and then you go a ruin it! Don't you know that travel blogs are how American sentiment is decided?

Welcome to Canada.
Hi.. I can relate to your experience with Canadian Border Services.. I am a Canadian and I hate having to deal with these people.. I have had an easier time going thru old Communist countries than getting back home!! They do not make for a pleasant home coming!!

Rebuttal #1
I'm glad I seem to have given you a soapbox... Anyway, I'm sorry you and your husband seem to be hassled more than this coming into the US, in spite of your American citizenship. Also, it is admirable that you don't make assumptions based on "some select experiences" pertaining to the idea that American people are ignorant of other countries (namely Canada, I presume) because of their apparent belief that there are only two cities in Canada full of beer, hockey, and beaver lovers. Further, I too see it as fortunate that you are not "narrow minded" [sic] and I am glad you have "travelled" [sic] the States enough to know that there are more than two cities in Canada and that there are people in Canada who do not love beer, beavers, and hockey. I have thought briefly about how my comments could reflect poorly on American citizens and reinforce stereotypes about Americans being egocentric and arrogant. Then I thought longer about how sometimes people need to lighten up. Sometimes people should realize the humor in situations and just have a laugh. All the time, people should realize that becoming upset over something as insignificant as a delay at the Canadian border isn't the right thing to do. People should instead laugh about it, and tell other people the story so they can laugh about it too. In closing, I know there are more than two cities in Canada. I have friends from Windsor, Montréal, Vancouver, and Calgary. I have other friends who canoe in the Quetico every year. I love beer, hockey (I'm from Minnesota after all), and dare I say... beavers, so I would view a predisposition to other people sharing that love as a compliment. Lastly, I stand by my assertion that a scene from a hockey game emblazoned across a $5 note is at the some time awesome and ridiculous... because it is.

You have got to be kidding me, you are basing your opinion of Canada and Canadians on a small incident at the border! And yes I say small because my husband and I have gotten a lot more of a hassle than that crossing the border into the United States, and I have American citizenship. If I were to make assumptions on the United States based on some select experiences I have had there I would think that Americans are ignorant of other countries because they think Vancouver and Toronto are the only cities in Canada or that all Canadians love beer, beavers, and hockey. Fortunately I am not a narrow minded person and I travelled the States enough (yes more an a trip for a few hours to one city) to know that these things are simply not true. You might want to think about how your comments poorly reflect American citizens and reinforce stereotypes about Americans being egocentric and arrogant.
