Just as I was finishing up after a long day, I was asked to visit a boy who was very sick. I was tired, but it was on my way home so I agreed. I am very glad I did! The sick boy lived close to my house in Hoi An. I went to visit him to see what the problem was and if I could help. I was taken to his house by a friend of a concerned neighbour and introduced to the boy I would soon know as Nguyen. That in itself was a bit strange, as it is usually a family member that would be requesting help. However, I was tired and missed that little bit of detail. Nothing in my past experience in Vietnam had prepared me for what was about ... read more

Thanh and Ghi's first month. A thousand first experiences. We stopped counting after the first week. They have settled in remarkably well and are extremely happy. Ghi and Thanh had a week and a half to get their bearings before they commenced their training at Mariana Hardwicks. Their week is now quite full and includes English lessons two nights per week taught by Lifestart volunteer, ESL teacher Lee Dib. ( Thank you Miss Lee for helping!) It is winter in Melbourne so getting used to wearing layers of clothes, singlets, gloves and scarves is so very different to life in Vietnam. As are flanelette pyjamas, hotwater bottles, carpeted centrally heated rooms, thick mattresses and doona's, a kitchen with endless gas and water you can drink straight from the tap, hot water showers, dishwashers, met cards, pampered ... read more

Hoa was three years old when she contracted Polio. Her parents took her to many doctors and hospitals, unfortunately no one was able to help. Polio left Hoa unable to walk, she cannot stand upright . Her body appears to crumple from the waist down so she moves around by placing her hands under her feet and slowly moves each foot. Getting from A to B is extremely slow and painful for her. Hoa's parents were very poor, they wanted her to attend school but unfortunately there was no one to carry her. A few family friends came to their house and taught Hoa how to read and write. Hoa told me that her neighbours were very kind to her, but she was too scared to venture far from home because people would stare at her ... read more

Thong ( pronounced "Tom" ) is another member of the Lifestart Foundation disabled group living with Polio. I call him a "can do " kind of man because there is not a whole lot that Thong won't have a go at. Thong walks on his hands, his legs simply do not work. So he puts his sandals on his hands, crosses his legs into lotus position and off he goes...........and by golly he's really fast! Thong contracted polio when he was one year old. He explained to me that Polio took his legs away. His family was very poor, they took him to many hospitals and he spent one year in a German Hospital in Vietnam. The doctors wanted to send him to Germany for treatment however his mother was too worried and frightened to allow ... read more

A brief snapshot of Trang's story............Trang a vibrant 25 year old had been living in a small room with three elderly dementia patients for the past four years, she lay awake every night in fear. Trang has polio and it is very difficult for her to walk let alone climb stairs. Her accommodation was on the first floor of an old building. She had access to terrible bathroom facilities down a walk way some distance from her room. Trang had few possessions and what little she had could be put in a plastic bag. Despite this Trang has the sunniest smile that draws you to her. She attended school to Year 9 and came to Hoi An when she was 18. That was the darkest time in Trang’s life. Her parents lived far, far away and ... read more

Sherry Berger is from Philadelphia, this is her second volunteering trip to Vietnam for Lifestart. I struggle to find words to adequately describe Sherry, suffice to say I think she is type of volunteer that all NGO's need at least one of and I can't wait for her return. Sherry is one of the most committed, hard working and compassionate human beings I have been fortunate enough to meet ( not too mention she is also extremely talented, super efficient, well organized and has a great sense of humour!!!). She embodies what the ideal volunteer is for me. Sherry works selflessly, takes on her volunteering role with 100% commitment and simply "gets " what it means to volunteer in the true spirit of the word! She gets that this is more often than not, exhausting work ... read more

Meet Nguyen. I was introduced to Nguyen about a year ago by one of her former teachers, Miss Chi. At the time I discussed further study options with her and she needed a bicycle which Lifestart was happy to provide. I was unaware that Nguyen was seriously ill. Nguyen lives a long way out of town with her mother and siblings, her father died some years ago.One of her brothers died three weeks ago. Her family is very poor. Nguyen was born with a heart condition, commonly referred to as a “hole in the heart”. In developed countries, this would be detected at an early age and fixed by a fairly simple procedure. Unfortunately for Nguyen living in Vietnam meant that this condition was not diagnosed until recently. She needs a complete heart and lung ... read more

It is with much excitement that Lifestart Foundation welcomes TRAN THI THANH and LE QUANG GHI to Melbourne, Australia. Thanh and Ghi are two outstanding young people who are involved in the Lifestart Foundation Jobstart Program. They will arrive in Melbourne on Thursday the 24th. of April and will commence their traineeships with one of Australia's leading wedding dress and couture designers, MARIANA HARDWICK on May the 5th. Thanh has been involved with Lifestart Foundation for a number of years. She originally came to my attention as a young girl who was being extremely exploited at her place of employment. Thanh was working 7 days a week for up to 18 hours per day, she had no accommodation and was forced to sleep on the floor of the restaurant when it closed late at night. She ... read more

Back in March I told you about a "mad but thoroughly loveable " Englishman who was attempting to fly across the Yarra River on behalf of Lifestart Foundation. Thanks to all those who left helpful suggestions on hair removal and other ways to improve his aerodynamics! They must have worked as James (aka Birdman!) managed a magnificent leap of 7.5 metres which earned him huge cheers from thousands in the crowd! He also managed to make a big splash for Lifestart - appearing in newspapers in Melbourne and in Vietnam and presenting (in costume!) to children at Carey Baptist Grammar School in Melbourne. Rather angelic in his flowing, white gown; expanding lacy wings and Vietnamese hat; James added an aerodynamic, racy ruffle of "Big Red Bird Feathers" just days before the event. It was nearly 40 ... read more

Not many Melbournians would jump into the Yarra River! But that's what Englishman, James Everson-Crane is planning to do on behalf of Lifestart Foundation! He will leap from a platform at midday on March 9th as part of Melbourne's famous Moomba Festival! Always optimistic, James plans to soar high above the crowds wearing nothing but a flowing, white gown and a big Vietnamese hat! Last year James and his family were visiting Melbourne during Moomba and happened to watch the Birdman competition. James was eager to comment on all the entries and certain that he could fly further! Without much thought, he promised his family that if they ever found themselves in Melbourne again during March, he would enter the competiton! And here we are! March is approaching, James and his family are in Melbourne and ... read more
