BACH DANG STREET
BACH DANG STREET
Only those with a two storey dwelling can save their few possessions.
The past few weeks have seen the worst floods in fifty years reek havoc in many parts of Vietnam. One of the worst affected areas has been low lying Central Vietnam. Most of Lifestart’s work is concentrated in Central Vietnam, in particular Quang Nam Province . The majority of the families that Lifestart helps live on a flood prone peninsula in flimsy dwellings, or in tiny boats on the annually flooding river. Whilst the families are used to dealing with the annual floods, this year everyone was caught off guard by the timing and enormity of the flood. A week prior [View Full Entry]

THANH, NO & TRANG
THANH, NO & TRANG
No family sedan here........nevertheless Thanh and No are thrilled with their new bicycle which helps them get to work. Baby Trang sits in a little seat at the front of the bike.
Lifestart Foundation purchases bicycles for disadvantaged families and students in Vietnam. School and work are more often than not a long way from home for families supported by Lifestart. Many school children travel a long distance to attend school. Those who are poor and without may, at times, be able to hitch a ride with a friend ... if they are lucky. The unlucky ones will walk many kilometers to and from school every day. In addition to relieving school children of their long walk, families for whom a bicycle is purchased will often use it to get to the market to [View Full Entry]

Born in 1968, Menh doesn't remember her parents and along with many others she contracted polio at a young age. Her father died in the war. Fearing for her life, her mother quickly married again and moved on, leaving young Menh with her elderly grandparents. Typically in Vietnam it is the woman who supports the family, and Menh’s grandmother was the sole income-earner, scratching out a living to support her grandchild. Menh speaks fondly of her grandparents whom obviously cared for her as best they could. When Menh was 11 everything changed. Her grandmother was bitten by their pi [View Full Entry]

You can try and imagine how frustrating it is to be disabled - but in Vietnam it must feel even worse. The disabled rely on these “push me-pull me” type of antiquated wheel chairs with which they propel themselves around the rough, pot holed streets. It is my dream to provide more specially adapted three wheel motor bikes to help the disabled to be more independent. It's a relatively easy way to transform someone’s life..... Take lovely Hanh, for instance. For over 18 years she has been largely confined to this bed. Unlike many of the group, she was not born [View Full Entry]

Following an accident, Hanh has spent most of the last 18 years confined to this bed
This seat frame helps to support Hanh. All the controls have been made manual and there is a wide base for Hanh's feet

THE NEW LIFESTART FOUNDATION FREE SCHOOL
THE NEW LIFESTART FOUNDATION FREE SCHOOL
This photo was taken before all of our beautiful trees were planted.Unfortunately the school is still in a flood prone area, however we now have a flood plan in place.
Lifestart Foundation Free School opened in March 2006 in a building kindly donated by the Vietnamese government. Although we shared the building at times, which was not the ideal set up for classes, I was very grateful to have anything at all. The government truly has been outstanding in supporting Lifestart's educational hopes for the disadvantaged children of Hoi An. To my absolute delight, the government has built us a brand new school, on the same street as our old building. April 2007 saw us set up and move to our new location. The classrooms are colourful, bright, and spacious, and [View Full Entry]

Hoa and Phuong and their three sons live in one very small room that runs off a narrow little alley. Their tiny room has a tiled concrete floor (a plus amongst many minuses). The walls of their room are made of woven bamboo and the roof is tin. Both walls and roof are in poor condition: the roof leaks and the walls have holes in them. The family all sleep on the concrete floor, as they do not own one piece of furniture. They have a few blankets, a couple of pillows, and a small gas burner to cook on…and that’s [View Full Entry]
