Hello Everyone!! I am currently in Gwangju, South Korea teaching english. I have created this travel blog so friends, family etc can keep track of my adventures! Kwangju, also Gwangju, city in southwestern South Korea. Located in an agricultural area, it is an important regional transportation and commercial hub. The main industries are rice milling and the manufacture of textiles, automobiles, and beverages. Chosun University (1946) is here. Kwangju has been a marketing and administrative center since the 1st century BC. Modern growth of the city dates from 1914, when it was connected by rail to Seoul. In 1980 pro-democracy protesters held the city for more than a week before it was retaken by government troops; several hundred protesters were killed in the conflict.

Here is the low down on South Korea--  If you want a Korean girlfriend.. Some korean girls go to the "western bars and clubs" where foreigners hang out.. and there will usually be some girls at your job.. Of course, you can always touch the "personals ads". That's your preference! As far as location, the Seoul and the surrounding areas are the most idea locations for an exciting teaching experience. If you teach ESL HERE, usually your accomodations will be provided for .. and more than likely your roommate would be another foreign teacher from your school.. The rooms are small and apartments are cramp. Everything here is small. Welcome to South Korea! If you do not have a pc, do not worry! There are tons of PC BANGS around. It's pretty cheap as well.. one ... read more

So I got my first pay check of $1,600,000 (wons) this past Friday but the funny story is.. I woke up Saturday and it was a typical Saturday. I took my usual walk through the park to the ATM to withdraw some money near my school..and went to the PC ROOM for a couple of hours. The new subway is open but the trains are not running yet? How weird is that.. Anyhow to the story.. I was on my way home and decided to buy a corn dog from the "vendor stand" which I walk by everyday! So before I got the opportunity to get my corn dog.. this crazy lady approach me and started speaking Korean. She was recruiting for a local church! (same as in America) Of course, I did not have a ... read more

Well.. I officially have spent 30 days in South Korea... I finally got use to separating the plastic, cardboard from the rest of the trash. I know where all the major department stores are.. The taxis here are fairly cheap.. I know where all the American eateries are.. I know where most of the bars are.. Lots of kids think I am funny.. They ask me strange things.. Almost.. like a celebrity.. they surround me.. and giggle and laugh.. I am from Texas.. soo I am use to the ups and downs in the temperatures.. but South Korea weather is nuts.. one day it's hot.. one day it's warm.. the next day it's cold!!!!!!!!! So much for a temperate climate!! I finally am settling in my teaching position.. It's tiring but the rewards are endless.. most ... read more

Today is Friday.. that means the weekend!!!!!!!!!! Of course, I had a very hard time getting out of  bed this morning. So last night I have my first "official" Korean dinner with my co workers and boss. One of the Korean teachers are getting married and we all said goodbye to her. The place we ate at was very nice! First, your shoes must be taken off (only in the nice, upscale places. The tables are only like 3 or 5 inches off the ground (If you eaten at a Japanese place in America) You know what I am talking about. Your chair is a pillow.. so we all picked what we wanted to eat and here is the interesting part... they brought the meat on a plate and you have to cook it yourself.. How ... read more
