We made plans with the other foreign teachers in Jianghua, Sam and Anna, to go see the Qing Yan cave. The Qing Yan cave is quite a large cave that winds through to the other side then back on a lower level with a boat ride from a lower level under. We brought along two girls from my Senior 1 level class, Becky and Lyda, and two students from Steve's Senior 2 classes, Berry and Michael, as our guides for the day. Our journey began early in the morning because the students had classes Sunday afternoon. We were on the bus to Qing Yan by 7:45. We all squeezed tightly into the back of the bus (made for a much smaller stature than us Westerners) and groggily-chit chatted during the hour long bus ride down the ... read more

It began with a bit of a hiccup. National or rumored international Mayday was the previous weekend. However, Senior 3 would need the entire school for exams the following weekend, so rather than giving the first and second year student's two 3 day weekends in a row they delayed the holiday to this weekend. Throw out the plans of students seeing their families when they were let out of the factory hundreds of miles away, teachers who had rented cars and made reservations with friends in other provinces, national edict and rumored international sanction. After a week of hearing plans dashed, ours were delayed with little interruption. Students from the town of Jianghua itself wanted to give us the tour de culture past and present. As the students usually get up at 6am they decided to ... read more

Saturday the April 18th we received a 9am phone call from an echo outside our window. Our foreign affairs officer Solar, standing outside our door wanted to take us for an outing. We have now learned an outing can be anything from mountain climbing to a fancy dinner. We were not to be let down. We were hustled out the door grabbing what we thought we might need and changing into what we thought might be appropriate. We waited half an hour for our mini van to arrive and hopped in. Off we go…one block later we stopped. Another teacher came out, ok I thought. Then the other teachers got out of the mini van. I assumed to say hello. We all piled out onto the sidewalk. An hour later we got into the school car ... read more

This past weekend was Qing Ming Jie or Clean the tomb. A time when people go to the mountains where the dead have been buried. There they maintain the tomb; and resupply the past away with food and money by burning incense, fireworks and paper money. They also make a few special treats one is quan zi (read chuan zi not Kwanza), a triangle ball of beans and rice wrapped in a thick green leaf and steamed. The other is ba ba a green glutinous rice flour patty with sugar, honey and peanuts in it. Sort of came out tasting like baklava but the rice flour is like a gooey green tamale also wrapped in a bamboo leaf and steamed. The latter is much better than the prior. Our students got 5 days off and most ... read more

Steve and I have been teaching for 3 weeks now in Jiang Hua. It's not the original town we thought we were going to, but it's not too far away from Jiang Yong. Jiang Hua is a small city located in southern Hunan province and it's a short walk to the outer edge of the city where there are green rocky hills, lowland farms growing rice, vegetables, greens, and mushrooms, and a large silty river. The weather seems to change very quickly at least at this time of year. In our first three weeks here it's changed from warm and humid to very chilly, to rainy, to chilly, to warm, to cold, to rainy, to cold and sunny and then it was a nice warm sunny day today. I think these very quick changes in weather ... read more

Hello all we are now in Beijing with our tickets to Guilin. Today was the great wall excursion. It was wonderful to get out into the countryside. Yesterday was a city day of getting train tickets and eating an awsome hot pot of fresh lamb and greens. We found a great park even though it was the first rainy day they had had in over 100 days. All the plants are dormant for the year but it is no less beautiful to see everything and adds a bit of a starting point for our year . Tomorrow we are off to our train ride where we will be touring much of the country from a window. That is all for now more soon.... read more

We fly out of LAX tomorrow, February 11th, at 12:30 PM. Steve and I are staying at my sisters place these last couple days in the States. Our bags are packed, our paperwork is in order, our bellies are full, and now it's just a matter of time. I am quite calm considering we are heading into a completely different cultural and linguistic experience. Neither of us have a good command of the Chinese language, so getting around and interactions will prove difficult. But I look forward to learning a new language and being immersed in a different society, where Communism follows a long history of Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Feudalism. There's a lot to be learned and a great opportunity to grow as a human being as we cross into a once forbidden land on ... read more

We finally know where we are going to be in China. We'll be teaching at a high school of 2600 students in Jiangyong, located in Jiangyong County in the Hunan Province. Jiangyong is nestled in a small rural valley about 100 miles south of a larger city Yongzhou, which oversees the county. There's about 250,000 people in the county. The weather is mild ranging from 6.6 deg C (44 deg F) to 28.8 deg C (84 deg F). The area is known for a very special written language that was only used by the local women called nushu, "women's script". Unlike Chinese script, it is a phonetic writing system. Unfortunately, it is a dying language with only a handful of women who still use it. A couple has been teaching at the Jiangyong high school for ... read more

Keren and Steve get Married We got married at Devil's Lake in Baraboo. We had a renaissance themed wedding full of feasting and merriment. Everyone participated in the wedding. My mother officiated the ceremony, my dad roasted a pig, Steve's parents and sister hired a lively celtic band, our friend Jenn made us a beautiful wedding cake, my friend Adriana made my wedding dress, and Steve's mom made his tunic. Everyone got dressed up and enjoyed drinking fruity mead, dancing, and eating. ... read more
