Geo: 44.5144, 34.1757Status; Arrived 0950hrs.!!! The train pulls in amongst a sea of people crossing train lines.Yalta Station is modern and full of small traders and harmless hotel touts. The sun is shining and we feel a sense of mild achievement as we have made it from Epsom Station all the way overland! To be frank we are exhausted! En route to Yalta which is only a feeble 1hr 30 mins drive away, we are to visit some caves in the hills! Can't wait.....possibly the last thing I want to do after virtually no sleep for 30 hours!.1130am Caves. We have driven up a dirt track and past a larger bulldozer. The scenery is magnificent but a I am fading fast. Eventually there is a small hut and a "Tyaet block" All painted up on the ... read more

Geo: 49.8409, 24.0336Summary: Up and packed. Richard the salami was hiding in the fridge but there is no escape. Today is the day!Time check: 0728hr:s at breakfast. Nearly 10 years ago we were sitting in another hotel in town ready to take an early train to Krakow. Just as the taxi arrived to take us to the station, I check the train tickets and our train had left 5 minutes ago!. Panic set in. The taxi driver (who I think had not paid his water rates) speed off at high speed in his Lada to join the train at the Ukrainian border. Chickens flying we sped off at Lada neck speed to the sounds of Boney M (Ra Ra Rasputi and Ma Baker) on his 8 track......eventually we saw the train at the border and we ... read more

Geo: 49.8409, 24.0336Update: The trials of yesterday seem a long way off and we are re-charged for a full days walk around historic L'viv. Located on the western side of Ukraine, the City is now looking towards the EEC and has shed it's Russian feel of 10 years ago when we were last here. Still slightly tumble down, they have made huge efforts to restore many Baroque and Neo-Classical buildings. The Vodka swigging vagrants that were so much in evidence on our last trip here in 2003 have been replaced by smart dog walking couples enjoying the sunshine. Weddings abound with each of the magnificent churches having a queue of couples outside. The Brides tottering around on impossible high heels and the men in shiny black suits sporting horrendous shirt tie combinations. This is a really great place ... read more

Geo: 48.45, 22.7167Status: We wake early in our 1950's Soviet bedroom. Our hosts could not be more hospitable. They are from Russia and have lived here since 1970. It is effectively a semi-self-sufficient small holding but has all the creature comforts as well as pigs and chickens. (Sounds like home!).We are treated to another hearty breakfast of omelette with pork crackling and some sort of goulash style egg fry up and gherkins. They seemed surprised I did not want any Vodka!Mission: To venture further into "BORAT" territory and see various local food production including cheese making.Viktor alert: Our room was separated from his by an unlocked door and curtain which I had reinforced with my suitcase. As soon as I saw him he looked tense and we had a convoluted discussion about the use of the ... read more

Geo: 48.199, 22.6593Status Update: After 10 hrs sleep we are fortified and spirits are high. At our home stay we have met Rex the dog who lives in the "Rex House" and been proudly shown the recent garden ornament purchase ( 3 fake storks from Wilkovitch). After a hearty breakfast of omelettes, pancakes and strawberries we bid our farwell to our hosts.Weather check: Better and no rain forecast until tonight.Sightseeing update: Today, highlights included a minor castle and the famous towns (I am sure you have all heard of them) namely Beregova and Macheveo. Both are renowned for the largest collection of working Ladas this side of The Urals. These are towns are the sorts of places you would not lightly challenge the local pensioners to an arm wrestling contest!New Alert: Look out for the "SBF" ... read more

Geo: 48.62, 22.3Status Update 20:20hrs. We are sitting in our Ukrainian Sleeper compartment trying to work out how the bedding works...there are several possible combinations of racks, chrome flaps and slots. I think I am "on top" again. It could be a long night. The train bogies are replaced with Russian wide gauge at the Ukrainian border. This involves hydraulic jacks that lift up the whole train. Come back Easyjet all is forgiven. We could have had several days in Barbados by now...instead of that we are "yomping" our way through Eastern Europe being told off by Stasi train guards for rucking up the carpet along the corridor in their 1936 - flea bag rolling stock, reminiscent of the inside of an Eastbourne bedsit just after the war.The lights of downtown Krakow slip by as the ... read more

Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115Chipper Meter: High : up and running at 0600hrs; CET; Coffee making marks 3/5. Wilko blend soon finished hopefully.Plan: To see the entire city by foot and absorb all facts sights and history; Wall, Check Point Charlie: more wall, bunker, Watchtower, sausage vending machine.Decisions to make: Do I wear shorts? Weather looks better - sun 20c. Are the Berliners ready for my legs. Not sure. Tech Advice: Do not eat crisps near the Ipad as small fragments have just clogged the "O" key.Fellow Guests: We thought we were early to the breakfast buffet but had been beaten to the trough by a group of American "globus" (5th Armoured Div) tourists who were en route to Nuremberg and were going for a "snack stop" at some US monument. Geo: 52.5145, 13.3982Progress: Predictably, the train arrived into Berlin Hbhf dead on time. Wow what a Station! Modern mega sophisticated and vast. Lines crossing above and below us. Who won??Admission of error: We decided to get the bus to the Hotel JFK Arcotel. Seasoned travellers do NOT do cabs unless really necessary. WRONG DECISION.... The bus drove through various Strassers at high speed and made map reading impossible. We decanted at what looked a small square just after the 1000 bomber raid in 1945. Ah we must be in the Eastern Sector me thinks! It then starts to rain and so we trundle off in search of our Hotel. Taking advice from a friendly porter in the "bunker sector" we arrive at a well polished and sophisticated Hotel slightly damp but pleased with our feeble navigation ... read more
