With it being our last day of riding today I think most of us set out with mixed feelings - on the one hand a bit sad to think that our adventure was drawing to a close, but also a bit of relief that we won't have to pull on bike pants tomorrow!! Nina warned us that as we draw closer to Paris the roads will be more crowdy, but she planned to try out a new route that is less crowdy for us. We headed out of Bougival amongst quite a bit of traffic and then Nina started searching for the forest trail that one of the other guides has discovered as an alternative. We actually spent quite some time in the forest looking for the right trail. Nina asked Robert to scout along one ... read more

This morning we had some time to explore Auvers sur L'Oise before we set out on our bikes. It is possible to walk around the town and see many of the vistas that Vincent Van Gogh painted during the last two months of his life. We managed to walk out to the cemetery where he is buried and photograph a couple of the scenes that he painted but, once again, much more time could be spent in the town exploring it in detail. Only a small group of us set out this morning after the rigours of yesterday!! There were just eight of us who set off with Nina at 11.00am. Frances and I are keeping each other going - both of us are determined to ride all the way from Brugge to Paris!! Following the ... read more

With today expected to be our hardest yet, I volunteered to be the sweeper so that I could just cruise at the back and not hold anyone up!!! Fortunately my alternate bike shorts don't seem to press in the same places as yesterday's shorts so I wasn't too uncomfortable in the saddle. And what an eventful morning we had!! Well before our first stop at Chateau de Chantilly, we had already had a fall (a nasty graze on the knee - not mine - but no broken bones) and some vomiting (again, not me)!! Of course Bernie couldn't resist telling me that this was my fault as sweeper. Just because he was lucky enough to have an incident-free spell as sweeper yesterday! Despite all of the incidents AND a wrong turn, we eventually arrived in Chantilly ... read more

Bernie volunteered to be the sweeper today. It may have been because he has a slight cold and wanted to be able to take things a little easier?? We set off from our mooring in Compeigne heading for the chateau at Pierrefonds. First we rode past the front of the Imperial Palace so that our wheels could touch the start of the famous Paris-Roubaix bike race. I have to say that the cobblestones are a killer!! I absolutely hate riding on cobblestones. Once we had negotiated the cobblestones and found our way out of the town to the start of the forest track the ride was beautiful - the best riding that we have done yet. We enjoyed an absolutely glorious ride to Pierrefonds along well-paved path through the forest. It really doesn't get any better ... read more

It was raining as we ate our breakfast this morning which did not bode well for our day's riding. Fortunately, by the time we finished breakfast, cleaned out teeth and got on deck to unlock and prepare our bikes, the rain had stopped!! Our first stop this morning was at Ourscamp Abbey, a Benedictine monastery not far from Pont l'eveque. The abbey is on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrims' route and offers accommodation for pilgrims. Out the back is the most incredible ruin that attests to the fact that the site must have been spectacular in its heyday. A team of archaeologists were working in the ruins. They turned out to be American so they were able to tell us that this is their second season at the site (2009 and back again this year) and ... read more

This morning it was sunny, but cool as we set off into a strong headwind. It didn't seem to matter which way we were heading - it was always into the headwind!! Bernie adjusted my seat this morning after asking on Friday - AFTER we completed the big hill coming into Peronne - if I was comfortable with my seat tilting forward. I had to say that when he mentioned it I had felt like I was pushing myself back onto the saddle all day!! I was so much more comfortable with my seat adjusted correctly!! Not long after setting out from the canal, Nina took us to a fish farm. For €4.00/head we were taken on a tour of the fish farm. First we biked around to the big lake where the owner told us ... read more

Today is a rest day. After six days of riding I think everyone is ready for a day out of the saddle?! Breakfast was at 8.00am as usual, but we then had about an hour to finish getting ready to leave the barge rather than the half an hour we have been getting between finishing breakfast and heading off on our bikes. We were due to be picked up for our tour of the Somme battlefields at 9.30am. We wandered up to the bridge over the canal at about 9.15am and Brian arrived in the minivan at about 9.20am. We headed first to the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux. The memorial is an imposing white stone monument that was unveiled on 22 July 1938 by King George VI. It bears the names of 11,000 Australian soldiers ... read more

What a bruise I have today!! As anticipated it is HUGE - about the size of my hand - and black as! I am massaging in the magic cream that I bought from Mark the last time I had a massage. It contains arnica which is supposed to help to break up the bruising??! We'll see. We negotiated several more locks before and during breakfast this morning. Each lock takes the Elodie about 11 metres higher and there are 12 small, narrow locks to be negotiated along this section of the Canal du Nord and one 3.5 mile tunnel. After sharing several locks with another barge ahead of us, Zac briefly moored the Elodie so that we could head off on our bikes for Peronne. The weather forecast was better for today, but that ended up ... read more

The rooster that crowed all yesterday evening started up very early again this morning!! It woke me at about 5.00am unfortunately and I really didn't sleep again after than - just dozed a bit. With a few locks to get through today the Elodie actually sailed while we were eating breakfast. Sander is the deck hand as well as the chef and he did an excellent job assisting Zac through the locks and feeding us at the same time! After we had cleared two (or was it three?) locks, Zac moored the barge and we all disembarked quickly so that the Elodie could continue on her way. She had a lot more distance to cover today on the river than we had to cycle on the road. Today we crossed the border into France. If Nina ... read more

With the weather looking more promising today, we headed off on our bikes. Today we passed into the French speaking part of Belgium. Nina told us that if she speaks Dutch in Wallonia they will ignore her!! Although the weather was sunnier today, we had a very strong head wind ... all day!! It was a bit tiring riding all day into a head wind, but Nina seemed to know when we were flagging and scheduled well-spaced stops for coffee, lunch and so on. We made excellent time today arriving in Tournai by about 1.30pm with the five spires of the Notre Dame de Tournai creating a stunning silhouette on the horizon as we approached. We locked up our bikes by the Pont des Trous where the Elodie would be mooring and Nina walked us into ... read more
