Komodo dragon

Totally get your fascination with Komodo dragons
I totally understand why you wanted to see Komodo dragons. I had the same wish 20 years ago when I went there (I have a blog post from there if you are interested). My dreams of Indonesia also included to see Krakatau, which I did a week or so later. So I, like you, fulfilled two lifegoals on the same trip, just not the same day. I just googled the current price for visiting Komodo Island. It is far more expensive today that it was 20 years ago, but not as high as I thought it was. By the way, your "I-am-sitting-with-a-real-Komodo-dragon"-picture is better than mine. /Ake

Dragon photo
Thank you so much Ake. It's sort of an optical illusion, and the guide took photos that make us look a lot closer than we actually were. A great experience!

Beautiful view

I stayed at the opposite to a 4 star hotel
When I was in Indonesia I stayed on Lombok for a few days to organise a trip to Komodo. I then ended up in a very simple guesthouse, basically a wooden shed with two mattresses on the floor. The deal at that place was that the accomodation was free of charge but we paid for the food we had. The food was not priced, but it was very good, and we paid what we felt it was worth. /Ake

Memories
Great comment. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome travel memories. It's still very common to travel to Flores from Lombok on a multi day boat trip. I flew, but the memories will live with me forever seeing Komodo dragons! Blog to follow soon.

Looks awesome
That really looks awesome. I went to Indonesia 20 years ago and I absolutely loved it there. I didn't stay too long in Bali as there were other places (Krakatau and Komodo) that I really wanted to visit. But the days I spent in Bali were great. Back then Ubud was quite laid back. Is it still? I have heard rumours that it isn't. /Ake

Risk of cancelled flights/Risk of being denied entry due to restrictions etc
What we are afraid of is sudden changes in covid restrictions. Some countries all of a sudden demand special certificates or go into lockdown without warning. If I spend my hard earned money on a flight tickets, hotels and more I don't want to sit in the hotel the entire vacation or even be denied entry to the country because I did not get an antigen test within 12 hours before departure from home. /Ake

Nice read
Nice to read about your travels to Thailand. We are not yet ready to go on any such distant places. We find it too risky still with all the restrictions that still come and go. But we hve traveled abroad this year. We will write about that soon. /Ake

Thanks
Thanks for the comment. I am a little confused about your feelings on risk TBH. What do you mean exactly? Life decisions always involve an element of risk. That is what makes life worth living in my opinion. Take care.

Drone shot of Lamai beach

My favourite beach in Thailand
I visited back in the mid 90-ies and ended up on Koh Tarutao in the south-west, very close to the border. I absolutely loved it there. Since it is a national park the number of tourists to those islands was then limited. So there were no resorts or large hotels, only maybe a dozen huts around the park headquarters. If it is similar now I'd recommend you to try that if you ever have the chance. /Ake
