Geo: 40.7492, 14.5007Cafe Caracciolo for breakfast, then caught the 10.45am train from Meta to Pompeii - standing room only. We planned to spend no more than a few hours at the historical site, but fellow Brits on the train advised it was easily an eight hour trip so looks like it could be a long, hot day. We hired ourselves an audio guide, with a free map and started our tour at the baths, outside the city walls. Then in through one of seven entrances in to the ancient Roman city that was destroyed when Mount Versuvius erupted in 79AD. The site is much bigger than we'd expected and very well preserved considering it had been completely buried in volcano ash (which preserved everything). The streets are laid out in a well organised grid with huge ... read more

Geo: 40.6299, 14.4863We discovered that our B&B is actually just a B with a stroll to the local cafe if you want the second B which consisted of a coffee, some orange juice and a croissant -not the buffet selection expected, but hey, you get what you pay for. The room is nice enough although it lacks pillows, towels, TV channels (the remote doesn't work) and the hair dryer plug is decidedly dodgy. We don't intend to complain as these things aren't important plus it's all part of the experience; besides the location is ideal (near the train, boat and bus stations) We contemplated (for a couple of seconds) driving the car we'd hired for the purpose of visiting, but then stuck to our original plan and took the train to Sorrento followed by the bus ... read more

Geo: 40.6263, 14.3757One thing we've come to learn is that you really don't need a car when you get to the Amalfi. It cost us 20 euro a day to park it whilst staying in the town. Today we drove to Sorrento along the coast via Praino and Positano, although couldn't stop to visit as the parking is atrocious. A very scenic route, sea views all the way and houses clinging to the hillsides. We got to the villa and settled in before walking into the centre (about 3 miles) from our villa, someone's family home with a pool and most importantly off-street parking. We explored the narrow streets (a common theme) and people watched from a cafe eating pizza and pasta. Afterwards we sat reading our books overlooking the harbour with Naples and Vesuvius in ... read more

Geo: 40.6387, 14.6003Sight-seeing of a different kind for us today in the form of a hike inland to the Valle delle Ferrier ( valley of the Forges). Walked uphill from Amalfi into the hills via a well marked route consisting of steps and stone paths past remote hilltop houses, lemon groves, medieval foundries and water-powered paper mills (Amalfi was once famous for its paper) We followed the river which was crystal clear and saw lots of waterfalls, some with sluice gates to divert the river. We ventured past the no-entry sign (along with other rebel walkers) to view a protected area of woodland (Reserva Integrale) which has a micro-climate where a particularly rare fern that lived in the ice age still grows with lots of other protected flora and fauna. We then retraced our steps a ... read more

Geo: 40.6384, 14.6006Lie in to compensate for our early start yesterday and late breakfast (cold meats, cheeses and yoghurt) before catching the public bus to Ravello, a town in the hills. We decided not to use the car as parking is a huge problem. Being in a bus negotiating hairpin bends gets the adrenalin going but hats off to the coach drivers who I think must have passed a special manoeuvring in a tight space driving test. Ravello is a beautiful town with the now-familiar alleys and steps leading to hidden gardens and restaurants. We visited Villa Rufolo, a 13th century house, important for its architecture, history and gardens (a heritage site) The Ravello festival had just come to an end and men were dismantling the stage which they build every year ( a platform with ... read more

Geo: 1.35574, 103.986Sadly the last day of our holiday down under. As our flight home isn't til midnight, we decided not to waste the day, so checked out at 11am and had our bags stored at the hotel until the transfer bus picks us up at 8pm. Caught the Singapore Air complimentary tour bus around the city, stopping off at the world class Botanic Gardens. We used a complimentary voucher to enter the Orchid gardens (the biggest orchid collection in the world) well worth a visit, although by the time we left we were melting with the heat! It was an immaculate and beautiful garden (with comments like that we must officially be old!) We spent a couple of hours there only as we had one more thing on our agenda which was to visit the ... read more

Geo: 1.29234, 103.842Having not eaten for over a day, I was famished, but rather than risk food prepared outside the hotel opted for a small plain menu option from the hotel buffet! That seemed to work OK so decided to do the river cruise around Singapore harbour leaving from Clarke Quay taking about 40 minutes (tickets complimentary courtesy of the hotel) We went straight from there to the underground (MCT) for our journey to Singapore zoo, which was located out of the city centre. We caught the train to Ang Mo Kio. The underground was very clean, well ordered and felt extremely safe. We had to get on a bus from Ang Mo Kio to the zoo, a half hour ride. This cost us about £3 return for both tickets - a billy bargain! On arrival ... read more

Geo: 1.28941, 103.85After an 8 hour flight, we arrived at Singapore Changi airport at 5.45 in the morning local time. We were transferred to the Park Hotel by minibus. The humidity on the weather report was at 100% (we thought if it was this high, surely it meant rain!) and it was certainly hot. I picked up a stomach bug somewhere en route from Oz, which luckily only kicked in on arrival at the hotel, whilst we waited for our room to become available. Luckily we had early check in so whilst I suffered, Tim made use of the hotel pool and explored the local area of Clarke Quay, where we were based on his own! He sussed out bus and underground routes for our activities tomorrow. I spent the next 22 hours in bed!... read more

Geo: -26.6386, 152.961Started day with kangaroo sausages and toast, surprisingly ok! After picking Maddie up from school at midday and taking her friend home to Buderim up in the hills, we went to another popular beach resort called Mooloolaba. Lynya and I did a spot of clothes shopping on the beachfront whilst the men drank coffee. We then drove a short distance to Mooloolaba shopping mall. Lynya and I hit the clothes shops again, whilst the men split up to look at technology related stuff. We met up for coffee at a cafe next to the river that ran through the mall, then home to prepare dinner (roast lamb). We discovered that it's a small world during our conversation before eating. Throughout our stay Lynya has been organising for an ex-work colleague, by the name of ... read more
