You are right the tomato is a fruit. Those that are skinned as is with fruit are skinned with acid which is neutralized with high pressure water as the skin is washed off. Most of the proccessed tomatos are not skinned. Canned whole and crushed tomatos are skinned. Every thing else is proccessed skin and all.
The last to climb El Capitan Captain Kirk tried and failed in the 1989 Star Trek "Final Frontier" movie. Since that occurs on star date 8454.130 it technically hasn't happened yet. Not the answer to your question about who was first, but the answer to "who was last".
Ha
Yes those semis are full of tomatos. They are in fields as big as a square mile or bigger. They are machine picked and trucked to the cannery where they are made into catsup, tomato juice, whole canned tomatos. tomato sauce, tomato paste, and any thing else you make out of tomatos. They are not used for fresh tomatos. The type of tomato size is about the size of half way between a golf ball and a tennis ball. They ripen all at the same time so only one time picking vine and all and sorted on the machine by hand by field labors.
The nuts are also in big orchards, some as big as 2 or 3 square miles. Once again they are machine picked. They have a canvas cone that fits around the base of the tree it is larger in diameter than the tree then the machine very violently shakes the tree for 2 or 3 seconds which causes the nuts to fall. To pick a large tree of nuts from the time the machine pulls up to the tree till the time it pulls away is about 10 to 15 seconds. They go by semi to the factory where they are cleaned shelled or otherwise prepared for public use.
Trivia for Carl. Is the tomato a fruit or a veggie? How is fruit skinned? Check the next blogg for the answer.
big tree Im gonna say no. I think I read a couple weeks ago that now the worlds tallest tree is in Washington. but still according to Guiness it is in Calif.
trivia question The bark of the redwood tree, the presence of water and the lack of pitch in the wood, makes the trunk of the tree with the incredible resistance to fire as well as insects and disease. MB
Hwy 101 The last mile for the direction we are traveling is in Southern California and it is very flat, looks like a drag race! Stay tuned and watch for the photo finish!!
length of US Highway 101 For Carl it is 1,540 miles long. For Maria it is 2,464 kilometers long. So, who will get to the end first? I guess it depends if the last mile is uphill or down! Ha Ha!
St. Johns St. Johns is correct, no one answered this so, you get all of Carl's Travel Triva points for this day. Remember these points are good, howevere they are not good for anything!
Mt. St. Helens Car Bonnie,
The car looks to be a late '70s Ford, an LTD perhaps. If memory serves me well, it was 5 1/2 miles from the mountain. From the looks of the car it was flipped over several times durnin the event. It was owned by couple that had a mining claim in the area. They were in their cabin at the time. Like the Spirit Lake Lodge owner (Harry Truman), they did not survive.
Question for you What is the make of the car you found "dead" at Spirit Lake? I bet the grill would have been a great collector item too. Probaby could have sold it for some big bucks.
I know I have said this before but your pictures are too wonderful for words. This is the best vacation EVER!!!
Permits to Hike... It seems that you need a permit to hike "off the beaten path" in every National Park.... I think it is like a job interview - they want to make sure you know what you are doing. Oh, and collect some money too!!
Can tell you the % but here's the number for last year 2005 - Had 8,972 climbers and only 4,604 were successful. I was amazed at the information provided to people that wanted to climb this mountain. It sounds very dangerous and too many rules for me. Seems odd you would need a permit to hike??? I was thinking you will probably be in the market for a new truck when your trip is over!
Welcome to our Travel Log... We, Carl and Maria are starting an adventure - The Odyssey - where we quit our jobs, travel around the USA and then move to Australia! Join us on our adventure...

Vowel Word
Wow! I hope you meant that facetiously! Sequoia is the shortest word (except they are not in order and "Y" is left out).
