Great to see an update and can't wait for more...hope you're enjoying Brussels (I lived there before and didn't love it, but am trying to get another chance to go there for work) - it's always educational to read about others' experiences.

your apt and moving day - From: We are finally settled!
Hi. that is pretty amazing how they got your furniture up to your 5th floor. Your apt is beautiful. a little bigger than the apt in Japan. I remember when we lived in Germany and I was babysitting one night for a family that the parents were going to France for dinner. Ha ha. So you like the Cafe and bistros. That does sound nice to go meet for drinks an d sit outside..cool.. Enjoy.

WOW - From: Moving Day
Hi you two!! What an incredible moving experience!! Loved the pictures and your detailed commentary about the move and the trials and tribs of laundry day at your home!! Whew indeed!! HOWEVER--what a beautiful apartment-great open space, attractive walls, built-ins and lovely flooring!! So impressive!! Let us see it all when you are done unpacking and decorating!! Too bad we can't all hold a house-warming party!! I remember when I was studying and living in Germany, I often traveled to Brussels and especially Brugge---just loved it all---most especially the great mussels and pommes frites--not to mention the Belgian chocolate--yum!!!!! You are rignt, dieting would be hard to do there!! Very anxious to see you on the August cruise--will be great to talk face to face!! Thanks for all your updates. We are suffering an abnormal heat wave--humid and in the mid/upper 90s--you know I am not a happy camper--argh! Tomorrow we drive with friends to Raleigh to see the Broadway production of Jersey Boys--it should be fun. Great music! Well, it is time to pour a libation and begin dinner preparations--tonight we enjoy salmon and I will stuff it with crabmeat. With an arugula salad and our own home grown grape tomatoes--and a glass of white wine--should be tasty!! Do keep in touch and enjoy your time there--you really are lucky to be so close to so many great travel expeditions--I am getting jealous--sigh.... Stay well, get rest and most of all, have fun!! Cynthia (and Rod)

Youth and Patience are on your side. - From: We are finally settled!
It's a good thing you are young enough to have patience and laugh at these little (LOL) problems. I can't even imagine Harry coping with any of it. But then that's why we are here safely tucked away in Florida and you are off experiencing the world. Good for you.

Length of blossoms - From: The Cherry Trees are blooming!!
Hi Leslie, They bloom for only a short time, about a week. But, if there is a lot of wind or rain, they can be gone overnight. That is why we took the day off friday and went out, as they were predicting rain for sunday. They are still blooming now, but not as glorious. It has been raining so they are definitly past their peak. When the blossoms start to fall from the strees, it looks like it is snowing. Even walking through that is pretty!

I know what a triumph this is, and how utterly rewarding (like finding a two pund box of See's candy by the side of your bed. This year it falls on Sunday, we celbrate our New Year at the same day. Arlene, have you start learning Japanese yet? Try some words, it fun to know other languages. My brother who picked up by Japanese ship when he left VN bu boat in 1981. He settled in Japan 5 years, spoke Japanese little bit, if he continued to work with Japanese restaurant, he would be fluently by now. Keep in touch. Light Switches - From: Aparmtent Pictures
The light switch Arlene showed was for the bathroom. All light swtiches are of the "press on press off" variety. Press it once and it is on; press it again and it is off. For the bathrooms, the top part controls the light. When the light in the bathroom is off, there is a little green light on the switch that lets you know it is off (for example if the door is closed). Usually a safe sign to enter. The bottom part is the press on press off for the fan. This time, there is a little red light that indicates that the fan is on. In the middle is a timer. When you turn on the fan, you have three options: two hours, four hours, or continuous. So, we can turn the fan on when taking a shower and know that it will automatically turn off in two hours. In the humid summer, we can just set to four hours instead. Marc

It will get easier...trust me - From: Finally an update…….
I, too, had similar experiences when I arrived in Switzerland. Everything was so foreign. Duh. And Europe is not half as foreign as Asia. Nevertheless, when I go back now, it is as familiar as back in the USA. I fit in Switzerland like an old shoe fits me. It will be home within 6 months and the US will feel alien. As far as adjusting to non-working, our identities are so tied up with what we do, especially when we have worked forever, it is quite an adjustment to find your identity...with or without children. What you are feeling is normal and will pass. Enjoy XMAS, Chunukah and have the merriest of New Years. It will be a year to cherish.

Hi Arlene! - From: Apartment Details
Wow Arlene, I just caught up and read all of your blogs at once...what an experience for you and your husband! You should write a book, you really are very good at describing things a reader has never seen before. I hope your back is better very soon, take care unloading those boxes. I guess it will be like a sense of belonging having your things around you again. How great that the landlords there will change things for you as part of enticing you to take the apt. Can you even imagine apartment complexes here doing that!! I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful and that your Holidays are happy. I know what you mean about Grey's Anatomy, that's a shame about abc.com. I look forward to reading more about your experiences. Good luck with the move in process. Tina

The apartment sounds fantastic! Congratulations on catching some good luck on the apartment hunt. That is very good news, indeed. And thanks for the warning .. who knew champagne drunk on high bar stools also carries the risk of throwing your back out? As always, you provide meaningful public service information. Seriously, though, I am sorry to hear your back has gone out. That's worrying. Please rest up and be very careful about handling too much stuff when you are moving in to the apartment. We are sending you big hugs. When's the virtual housewarming party?

Enjoying your Blog - From: More Observations…
Arlene--Helen and I are enjoying your journal of being in the big city. We look forward to each and every one. Please keep them coming even tho it is Thanksgiving week. Pleae enjoy the American Thanksgiving dinner at the American hotel. Helen said when getting onto the subways be careful and not get close to the door on the opposite side. We know, used to, during rush hour they have pushers who push people onto the trains. If, by chance, the other door is open they will push people out and onto oncoming trains. This is a true story. Lots of people were killed in this act. Of course times have changed now and it probably is not happening now. In other words don't take a chance. Stay away from the doors. Ray & Helen

Hello There! - From: More Observations…
Hi Arlene, How are you!! I am quite embarrassed to admit, but I just figured out that I can add comments to the travelblog! The email that I receive with the link indicates "do not respond". Oh my.....anyway. I so enjoy reading the blogs. You and Marc are living an adventure! What will you be doing for Thanksgiving? Will the expats be having a get together? Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. What is the weather like? What experiences can Marc share regarding his new role? Can't wait to see all the pictures. God Bless you both. With Love, Kerry

Tokyo living - From: Initial Impressions
The prices are shocking. My mom has visited Japan a few times. She liked the toilets so much she had one installed at her home. It gets a lot of comments when unsuspecting friends use her bathroom. LOL! Don't every lose those pink shirts, girlfriend. Cheers, Anne

Living in Toyko - From: Our Activities to date…
Arlene and Marc. So nice to hear from you two. I can imagine the inviro you two are having. After experiencing living there for 2 years I can relate. It has been a long time since we were there and can imagine how much it has changed. However basicly it is the same. Hae you learned the exchange rate of US to Yen? When were were there the exchange rate was about 360 to 1. Again glad to hear from you and keep in touch. Can't wait til the time we can see you there in person. Ray & Helen

Arlene~ love the detail and it is like we are with you both. I sure hope you find a cheaper place for toothpaste. Once you get your apt,. I wonder if it will be cheaper to order items like that on line and shipped to you both. What is the time difference from Toyoka to the east coast?

Japan living-KONICHIWAA! - From: Things are MOVING along…… Things are MOVING along……
Hi! Just saw your blog and found it interesting. My son teaches English in Handa, Japan and has lived there for 3 months. Just as some advise, take very little... Housing there is very different than American housing, there is not much room. I would leave my tax info with my parents or a trusted friend. Decide what you absolutely need and then go through it and divide that by HALF again. You will thank me when you realize that there is no place to put your stuff. Your blog doesn't say how long you will be staying, but you can always leave stuff here and send for it if you absolutely need it. Good luck (OHIO) TLCRNICU

Thanks for taking the time to keep up your blog. Arlene, I can relate to your packing woes. It's so hard to anticipate what you will and will not need. Remember it's only stuff, although it is your precious stuff. Wish I could help you with that crystal ball!

Arlene I really enjoyed your blog. I am excited for you guys I know there is a lot you have to do, sounds like you have a good plan. We lived in a one room/hotel. (we did have our own bathroom) when Kevin was stationed in Osan Korea. The countryside is beautiful. I never got to Japan, but always wanted to see it. Maybe I will be able to visit.
