Today is the flight to Beijing, China and I couldn’t be more excited. I will skip the nitty gritty and flash forward to the events. Kaori and I met an amazing couple at the Osaka Airport. Tohru and Atsuko Ozaki were born and raised in Japan but are now living in China. We got to talking and found out some very good tips from their personal experience. First off, they mention that if you are offered a price on any item in the streets or at store, divide it by ten to get the local price of item. Tohru mentioned that while shopping in China she paid 80 Yuan, about $12, for an item at one play then later in she found the exact same item for 20 Yuan. So if you are shopping around, don’t ... read more

Today is the first time I have been able to visit an actual Japanese School! Kaori and Midori invited me to visit their old High school which is about 30-40 minutes bike ride away from home. I didn’t know what think besides anime and movies I saw about Japan, so I had a typical stereotype mind set. As we arrived I was impressed to see that Japanese schools have Elementary, junior high, and high school next to one another. This makes finding and placing your “son or daughter” in a school trouble-free. Kaori told me a few tid bits about how it’s a “Christian school” with nuns and teachers at the same location. I know in USA, we separate Church from State but sometimes there are schools that practice both school and religion at the same ... read more

For the first time it snowed in Osaka! I was very surprised when I woke up in the morning. I didn’t want to waist the day and I know it rarely snows in Osaka, so I wanted to go back to the Osaka Castle and get some pictures. The train ride was fun to snap shots and record video for the first time. I wanted to see what Osaka had during the snow days and I thought it would be fun to see Osaka Castle with snow. I wanted to stop by the ATM at Tenmabashi station but I didn’t know where the JP ATM was. Lucky I ran into very kind women who helped local Japanese students travel abroad, the program was called Intercultural student travelers. She spoke very good English and even had the ... read more

The day was bright and refreshing and so was my outlook for the trip to Kobe. Kaori mentioned to me that today is Chinese New Years and the only way to celebrate is by going to China town located in Kobe. We also planned on stopping by the school I would be attending in March called Kwansei Gakuin University. So we had some pretty fun adventures planned for the day. On our way to Kobe Kaori stopped in a store at the Umeda underground shopping mall to pick up some cheaper tickets. This small shop sells discounted tickets to anything from movies, concerts and rail tickets this store had it all. Normally if we were to purchase our tickets at the station it would cost ¥850, however we purchased ours for ¥760. It may not seem ... read more

Today is our flight back to Japan. We had to wake up early and find our way back to the Airport, but it was very easy and smooth. I managed to grab a Pepsi to try just before we got on the train to the Airport. I really enjoy trying international brands in different counties to taste and see the difference. Personally, I think the carbonated drinks in Asia are much fizzier with a little less syrup flavor. The plane ride was perfect and it was very comfortable to sleep on the way back. As far as service, food, and timeliness were concerned Korean air was a perfect choice. Some of my final thoughts for the trip are even thought I went to another part of Asia; Korea is very different and has a very original ... read more

Today was all about shopping and Both Kaori and I were able to shop around at both Insa-dong and Myeong-dong. After a few days of looking around and checking different activities it was time to get some souvenirs for our friends and family. We started at Insa-dong because it was highly recommended by some online guides and by the books we looked at. The train ride was a synch and finding Insa-dong was simple and easy. First part I would like to mention is that Insa-dong is smaller than Myeong-dong, but, Insa-dong has a lot more traditional Korean souvenirs and locally made items for sale. The street stretched for about 1.5 miles and both sides are packed with vendors, stores, food, and people. Some of the local stores had reasonably priced foods and cloths for sale, ... read more

After the DMZ tour earlier in the day, the hunger bug decided to strike again and the guide book directed Kaori and I to make a heading towards Dongdaemun shopping area. However, this was not as great and exciting as we had hoped for. The streets were brightly lit and the people were bustling around, yet the attractions and stores at this location were not at all happy to see visitors. To put it into to lighter term, Myeongdong is like New York, fast paced and everything you could want. Yet Dongdaemun is more like Oklahoma, hard to find places and no one wants to see you in their store. Walking around the area, there are many stores and malls to choose from. There are also many outdoor “sit down food kiosks”, that one can drop ... read more

Editors Note: I want to make it clear to all readers that before you read this, the opinions and comments expressed are solely my own, and they are not to be given serious thought as extensive critiquing. In lighter terms this is just my point of view and some observations that I found about the DMZ and JSA Tour. I am very fortunate and very lucky to be on such a tour and hope that people can go see the DMZ and JSA for themselves to formulate their own opinion. Today is finally the day we get to go to DMZ and JSA. For those of you who may not know what those are, the DMZ or “demilitarized zone” is the 4 kilometer “buffer zone” between North and South Korea, two kilometers for each side. The ... read more

Today was all about historical places! Our first visit was Deoksugung palace. Our arrival to the palace only took 10 minute to walk to, and is located right next to one of the subway. We arrived a little earlier than usual so Kaori suggested going to the gift shop to warm up and grab a snack. Backing up a little; the front entrance was boasting with beautiful arrays of colors; from blue, green, yellow, red and more. We walked to the tour location and found out that Kaori and I were the only two for the tour, so it was a personal guided tour. Our tour guides name was Lenny, and she knew it all. She gave a brief history lesson about Japan and South Korea and all the “events” that lead up to today. This ... read more

Dear readers, I have not had as much time as I would like to write and post new blogs for people to see and experience. I apologize for not having a steady week or daily pattern to each new blog. I have been working on making this both a memorable and exciting experience for you the reader. With that in mind, upon review of some of the older blogs, I saw some major spelling and grammar errors and I believe I can do these better justice . I thought to myself "is this really the best I can do?" and no it is not. I went back and changed several old blogs by reworking the words and descriptors for the stories. Hopefully I can shed new light on these stories and give you the reader a ... read more
