Scott had had his heart set on doing some deep sea fishing for months so after some research we settled on Surasak fishing tours. We decided to spend the extra baht and go on the full day Sail fishing trip as Scott had high hopes of reeling in the big one. We were picked up at our hotel and proceeded to the pier at 8.30am. The boat we were on did not look like the boats in the brochure, but we let it slide and looked forward to the adventure. We met a Saudi man called Halid who spoke pretty good english and soon took a bit of a shining to Scott. We trawled behind the boat out of the bay with no luck then did some hand line fishing after lunch, which we found a ... read more

We decided to head to Sihanoukville on the fifth to spend 3 or 4 days for some nice beach relaxation. We had originally planned to stay on Sokha beach but we left our accomodation booking till the last minute so quickly booked a hotel from Phnom Penh before we hopped on the bus. We decided on The Cove Beach Bungalows, for $35 a night. Anyone wanting to stay on Serendipity Beach we would definitely recommend The Cove despite still being able to hear the booming music from the beach parties, you can still sleep well after a bit of getting used to the sound and have a great view of the bay from the northern end of the beach only 20 metres from your front door. The bar, run by a great Cambodian guy called Punya, ... read more

Annie - After Ben left Bangkok for Australia I decided to head on down to Phuket to spend the week while waiting for Scott to arrive on the 29th January. A little research told me that the buses heading south quite often have thefts from the baggage compartment. I decided to travel by bus anyway as it saved a heap of money. Although I did not have any problems with theft, however, I did have trouble with the trip itself. We arrived at Surat Thani around 5am, and had to wait till 6.30am for the bus to Phuket town. This was part of the plan, but once we hit 6.30am we were taken by tuk tuk to another station, where there were minibuses heading straight to the beaches for a further 300-500 baht right away. We ... read more

My blogs are getting later and later, and this one should have been up a week or two ago! Sorry about the lack of enthusiasm, been out and about a lot this last week. We ended up staying in Vang Vieng a few more days than originally anticipated for two reasons. One Ben was having a blast going to the bars at the river, and two I hurt my back on a rock tubing down the river on the first day. Im guessing the mix of alcohol and the cold water kept the pain at bay that first day, because the second day I could hardly walk. I wanted to go for a bike ride and see the caves outside of Vang Vieng so we figured we may as well wait it out. Ben had heard ... read more

Just a quick update seeing as I am so far behind in my blog writing - So we took the dreaded 22 hour bus across the border. Before we left readsome of the endless horror stories online about this trip, but being on a tight budget, and the bus being around 10 times cheaper than a flight, we decided to hit the road. And what a choice that was! Here is a hint to anyone undertaking this trip - Do not opt for the sleeper bus and seated bus option (We thought it would make the trip a little more comfortable for only $10). By the time we actually got to sleep, impossible before midnight because of the blaring TV and pop music, we were woken up at 2am for the changeover to the sitting bus! ... read more

We decided to book a tour to Sapa for the following day and ended up deciding on a 4 night 3 day tour. Our tour included all travel, meals, accomodation as well as the daytours for an average of $25 a day. We left Hanoi on Friday 1st January at 9pm on a sleeper bus to Lao Cai, which was due to arrive at around 5am the next morning. We were supposed to be in a higher class sleeper but due to our late booking we could only a seat in a lower class. However, being our first sleeper train ride it was fantastic, definately better than the sleeper buses we have taken all the way up the coast of Vietnam. We were placed in a cabin with another two older gentlemen who were also doing ... read more

We were dropped off on the highway in Ninh Binh at 4.30am in the dark. We had not even checked out a map let alone booked any accomodation, so when we were greeted by a gentlemen who introduced himself as Mr Xuan we were more than happy to let him guide us through the dark to his hotel. Mr Xuan runs the Xuan Hoa Hotel, which is actually two hotels seperated by a small road, and showed us a room we managed to haggle down to $8. We only planned on staying in Ninh Binh the one night, as we were really only interested in checking out Tam Coc and perhaps a few pagodas, so after a long breakfast and a bit of time updating the blog we were off. We hired a couple of bikes ... read more

The sleeper bus to Nha Trang left at 8:30pm from our handy travel agent in Ho Chi Minh City. It consists of two layers of beds with three rows extending down the bus. Each bed had a small storage space at the bottom that doubled for both carry on luggage items and leg and foot position. A blanket is provided (as is the customary bottle of water) which is just big enough to cover your exposed body. Despite the cramped cnditions it is actually possble to get quite comfortable and I spent most of the bus ride soundly asleep after tuning out the horns being used in traditional style. A seatbelt is also present but as far as I can determne is more for personal assurance that you won't fall out of the bed (something that ... read more

We left Can Tho on the 9am bus that the kind lady at the Hein Guesthouse booked for us. The most surprising thing about the Mekong for me was the amount of houses along the way between towns. The small map in the Lonely Planet Guidebook had the main towns marked out, sepereated by long winding roads. However, We did not see a single open space between Can Tho and Rach Gia. Rather, it was like travelling through a large suburban sprawl. The only reason we noticed we had arrived in Rach Gia was the signs! I have to first, point out, at how annoyingly useless the maps in the guidebooks are! Our arrival was met with about 3 or 4 motorbike taxi's trying to take us to the ticket office for around 80,000 dong each. ... read more

For our first day in Ho Chi Minh City we decided to wander around and see some of the sites. Needless to say we managed to get ourselves ripped off in our very first haggling situation. We came across two Vietnamese men, mid forties, who offered to take us around in their cyclo’s. We were planning on heading to the Jade Emperor Pagoda, and seeing as they had a list of tourist locations to visit on hand, it seemed easy to just point out where we were headed. However, we were unsure of what price would be considered fair. After they suggested 100,000 dong an hour, each, I suggested 50,000 each. Their shocked faces were answer enough, so we agreed on an 80,000 one way fare to the pagoda. The pagoda was fantastic! Not as ... read more
