Bharatpur Day 21 of Rajasthan Tour Nothing here, there is a bird sanctuary with about 4 birds in it (apparently they did not come back this year yet as its too cold). We enjoyed ourselves for an hour or two bicycling around the park, but I would not recommend staying here overnight, would not even bother stopping. Hotel was dirty and horrendously over priced - Hotel Pratap Palace - its no palace. Agra Day 22 of Rajasthan Tour Well this is the last night of our tour and we have to say goodbye to our driver, we will be on our own tomorrow - scary thought. We spent both our days here sightseeing and eating at Pizza Hut and Costa Coffee. I try to never touch Pizza Hut in New Zealand, their topping has degraded to ... read more

Udaipur Day 14 & 15 of Rajasthan Tour The drive to Udaipur took us to a 500 year old fort, Kumbalgarh, yes I think every one of the old 25 kingdoms had a fort, but this one was quite interesting, it had 360 temples within its walls. Its wall is the second longest to the Great Wall of China. Lots of walking up hill, lots of huffing, but we got to see the Queens toilet, like this hole in the floor that dropped straight down like 3 floors to a concrete floor - splash! There is a village in the fort and the Muslim families were all dressed up in their bright colours and the children had been given money for sweets and chippies. It was an annual festival, the celebrations of which include sacrificing a ... read more

Mount Abu Day 10 & 11 of Rajasthan Tour AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR………..his place is just great. The streets are clean, so not many animals come shopping with you. There are little hilly roads and a lake at the bottom with boats you can peddle. You can walk everywhere, so no tuk tuks in town, and there are like 10 ice cream bars - crisp cone, chocolate coated ice cream sprinkled with bits of toffee…yum yum yum. Mt Abu is a hill station, so colder than elsewhere and it is where the Indian residents come to vacation. The food is great and we love the prices, they don’t have foreign tourists menus here! Over 2 days we see 8 other foreign tourists only. It’s a lovely place to walk around, we walked down one whole side of a street ... read more

Jodphur Day 8 & 9 of Rajasthan Tour A 5 hour drive past countless open mines and hills where they are chipping away at the rock to make bricks for building, we arrived in Jodphur, population 800,000. Quite clean really, Lonely Plant says it is full of rubbish and open sewers but we are yet to see this, I mean there is always rubbish somewhere in every town in India, but here its not everywhere. We have thoroughly enjoyed the food in India so far and have been eating mainly vegetarian. At tourist restaurants you can buy a kingfisher, like NZ$3.00 for a large bottle but nothing else. I have had some Indian Rum at one local restaurant but it tasted horrible. We are not keen on trying their ice cream, as it is not served ... read more

Khuri - Camel Safari Day 5 of Rajasthan Tour This place is in the desert and an area that is not so touristy for camel safaris, like the Sam area. We paid NZ$80.00 each for a night in the desert, camel ride to sunset, dinner, night under the stars, breakfast and camel ride to sunrise. We arrived and were shown to a hut, although we also had the option of sleeping under the stars. Well I could not believe the hut, it was circular, thatched roof with material tent ceiling, cold grey concrete walls and floor. We had the ensuite (some were not so lucky), rusty tin door into a room with western toilet but no seat, small dirty basin and cold shower, all on a dirty concrete floor. This place was not clean. Thank god ... read more

Mandawa Day 1 & 2 - Rajasthan Tour The sights out of the car window on the way to Mandawa were made up of desert, huge carts piled high with bales being drawn by camels, goats being herded across the road by a women in brightly coloured saris, stray cows and dogs roaming the streets eating rubbish. Family homes being a mixture of tents, cloth held up by branches and concrete block houses. Riding towards us were 3 people on a motor bike, the only unusual thing about this was one was dead; stiff as a board lying horizontally across the seat. A man in his thirties, our driver commented - alcohol. Apparently in India ARAK kills thousands of men a year. The Government distilled Arak is safe, but obviously that is too expensive for some, ... read more

Delhi We arrived last night in New Delhi after a 4 hour flight from Bangkok, but it took another one hour and 20 minutes before we were walking out of the airport with our bags. Outside the air was misty, the ground dusty and men were walking past us with blankets wrapped around them to keep out the cold. The car park was filled with old cars, dirt ground and an even older car to take us to the hotel. The roads were filled with trucks, we even got into a traffic jam at 2am in the morning! After reading many reviews we were expecting the worst, but day 3 is over and what we have seen of Delhi has exceeded our expectations. Plus there are new delights - you are not only sharing the streets ... read more

PHU QUOC I am writing this on the verandah of our beach front bungalow. It’s mid afternoon and has been a beautiful day in late 20’s - our 5th day on Phu Quoc Island. Our bungalow sits on white sand with just a few meters away from the waters edge. A few late sunbathers are getting massaged on white loungers, some are sleeping under the shade of the palm trees, others are swimming and fresh pineapples and watermelon are on offer for a dollar. You can hear beer can tabs cracking and European chatter in the background, all waiting to witness the pink sunset in a couple of hours before moving to the beachfront restaurant, with wine in hand, view of the beach at dusk and a plate full of great tasting food. Jealous! The 3km ... read more

Please Note - today I have uploaded 2 blogs, Nha Trang & Da Lat precede this one. Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and Mekong Delta We had been told by other travelers not to stay in Saigon and as we drove into it we understood why, rubbish all over the streets - they really need to fix their rubbish problem. Although I heard India just started rubbish collection a few years ago - so I probably need to change my attitude pretty soon! But in Saigon its self its great, naturally we stayed around the backpackers area so we only got a small view of the city, but we loved it. Perched on the corner of a street with a long island iced tea in hand at a French style bar (everyone sitting outside facing the ... read more

PLEASE NOTE I uploaded 2 blogs within a few hours of each other last time, one for Han Oi with the traffic videos and one for Hoi An with the flood videos. Some people thought there was only the last one Hoi An, so you may have missed one. I am traveling with a laptop so I do them as I go and when I get good internet access I upload what I have done, so often I will upload more than at one time, like this time I am uploading this one and Saigon and Mekong Delta at the same time. Nha Trang Its only when we arrived at Nha Trang that we realized how different each region of Vietnam was. Han Oi was vibrantly busy, colourful with a mix of village atmosphere and city. ... read more
