RECAP: A team of 12 Tacoma/Pierce County folks journeyed to Lesotho in February 2010 representing the Global Neighbor Project. To maximize resources, the Global Neighbor Project joined with World Vision’s Sekameng Area Development Project in Lesotho. This comprises 21 villages with a population of 4900. An Area Development Project is a community-based approach to sustainable solutions helping one child and one community at a time with:Clean Water, Food, Education, Micro- enterprise ,Caregiver supplies, Health Care and community development. The teams that visited in 2006 & 2008 saw water systems under construction, and seeds being planted in community gardens. They met community members who were being trained as volunteer caregivers to help their neighbors suffering with HIV/AIDS. The Global Neighbor Project priority is to help the orphaned children struggling to survive in the... read more

VISITING THE KING -- We breakfast on scrambled eggs, bread, pork and beans and English style sausage (bland hot dogs) and then load up in our caravan of four Toyota Crew Cab 4X4s and one Land Rover with roof rack to make the 40-minute drive to Maseru. We arrange a stop at the new mall for 30 minutes to pick up some necessities like batteries, sunscreen and espresso drinks (instant coffee or tea is served at the lodge; I share Starbucks VIA instant coffee packs with the group). Rick decides to invest $30US in a desk fan for our room, which he knows will make a nice gift for the World Vision office staff when we depart. He decides that will make the room more pleasant with some air movement. After the brief visit to the ... read more

The Global Neighbor Project team of 12 visited Lesotho to tour the Sekameng Area Development Project supported by World Vision, of which GNP is a major contributor. GNP is an outreach from the citizens of Tacoma/Pierce County, WA including the faith community, elected officials, community leaders, students and community volunteers to Sekameng, Lesotho, Africa in support of the orphans and vulnerable children affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Five of us had visited in September 2006, so we were anxious to gauge the progress of the communities in accessing clean water, fresh produce, and utilizing caregiver kits, school supplies, furniture and uniforms as well as setting up pork and poultry production, sewing and shoe making micro-enterprises. Pastor Dean Curry initiated the Global Neighbor Project, and this would be his fifth visit to Lesotho. Our team includes Bob Bowen ... read more

SOUTH AFRICA SIDE TRIP Our group of five left Lesotho for three days at Hueglin's Lodge in White River, South Africa, to visit with Rotary acquaintances of the Olsons who own the four star lodge. Brian and Frances Hyson met us at Nelspruit Airport, designed to appeal to the many safari tourists who land there. It is an impressive thatched roof, log beam structure that feels like Ernest Hemingway should be lounging in the bar to share stories with adventurers. Frances had visited Tacoma in 2006 leading a Group Study Exchange Team of young professionals on a tour of our Rotary District. They stayed with our club for five days. Rick and I had hosted Francois, but spent time with the entire team at Rotary events, social evenings and tours of Tacoma attractions. One of the ... read more

Our journey started September 21 and ended October 2. The Global Neighbor Project Team of Tacoma, WA -- Kathleen and Rick Olson, Michelle Cox and Julie Nordlund, led by Bob Bowen of World Vision, left SEA-TAC on a Sunday afternoon and arrived in Lesotho on Monday morning. We flew Northwest Airlines Airbus, KLM 747 and South African Airways turbo prop to reach our destination. We laid over in Amsterdam a couple of hours and hit Johannesburg late evening. We missed the shuttle to our hotel and had to wait for the next one, so by the time we got to our rooms, we had time to shower and take a nap before catching the shuttle back to the airport for an early departure. We do NOT recommend this schedule, as it was too long of a ... read more

We finally have internet. We are staying in White River South Africa, at http://www.heuglins.co.za/accommodation.htm (cut and paste into your browser to see an excellent accomodation). We will be heading home tonight, have a 10 hour flight to Amsterdam, 3 hour layover, and 10 hours to Seattle. We had an exciting visit to Kruger National Park yesterday, that started with part of our group being in a car accident caused by the driver of their vehicle trying to avoid a dog crossing the street. Minor injuries, and our Rotarian friends found other friends to take us on the tour. We will post more pictures of our successful mission in Lesotho, but for now, we have posted a sampling of pictures of our past 9 days. Rick and Kathleen... read more

Why am I traveling to a tiny country surrounded by South Africa? Why now? Here's the deal: It started when I was President of Tacoma 8 Rotary in 2005. Our club hosted a team of business persons on a study exchange from South Africa. They stayed in Tacoma for a week and my husband Rick and I hosted a team member. I worked at Point Defiance Zoological Society at the time, and provided a behind the scenes tour so the five of them could see polar bears and beluga whales up close. The leader of the group, Frances, was from White River, a community near the southern part of Kruger National Park. She extended an invitation for us to visit if we could. I figured perhaps one day I would accompany a Zoo staff and donor ... read more
