23 March 2013 At 04h30 in the morning, sitting at KL LCC, after getting in after midnight thanks to that wonderful and almost never on time budget airline Air Asia, it is hard to get excited about going to Vietnam. Just a warning to fellow travellers, buy your taxi coupon before you exit the arrival hall or you will be f#*#ed. KL Low Cost terminal has become a nightmare. Transport syndicates prevent you from just catching a cab outside the door like you once could, and the place is so crowded now that even if you did get your coupon in the right place, you will stand in a very very long queue and taxis are not guaranteed even if you have the coupon. This terminal is horrible. Almost as bad as Manila. We have just ... read more

Semenggoh Wildlife Centre Semenggoh Wildlife Centre was established in 1975 to rehabilitate injured, orphaned, or confiscated illegally held wild animals. The centre is situated just south of Kuching, in Sarawak, in Malaysian Borneo, in the small Semenggoh Nature Reserve. The reserve covers about 6.8 square km of rainforest and is really beautiful, but really small. Semenggoh centre has cared for over 1000 endangered animals of all types but it is best known for its work with orangutans. There are currently 27 semi wild orangutans living in the park, 11 who were rescued from captivity or were orphaned, and 16 of their offspring. 5 of the adults are now completely wild and you probably wont spot them, but the others often swing by for the feeding sessions in the morning and afternoon to snack on fruit and ... read more

Verdant, primary, vital, alive, wild, flourishing - all these words seem too small to describe the rain forests of Malaysian Borneo. 60m tall trees with whole ecosystems living in their branches and on their stems. The sounds of birds and insects at inconceivable decibels. The only species of great ape found outside of Africa (besides us of course); hundreds of mammals, rodents and reptiles. Impenetrable rampant lushness.... This is nature at its most basic and beautiful; its most diverse and dynamic. Awesome!!! Then, we take a corner and suddenly, as far as the eye can see there are oil palm plantations. Generic, homogenised, dead spaces growing bio diesel and cheap additive oil for the food and cosmetics industries. F*#k!! Yes, it's green, but it is sterile. No animals; no birds; no other plants except a single ... read more

15-20 March Kuching Sleeping late at the Lime Tree hotel in Kuching is just not an option - the breakfast is too good to miss. Sarawak Laksa, fresh papaya, and great coffee I am not prepared to forego. I have promised the Lime Tree as much limelight as I can muster in this blog, as they really deserve the honours. What a fantastic little hotel. So, advertising done; on to Kuching. Kuching is the capital of Sarawak province in Malaysian Borneo and is situated almost at the southern tip of Sarawak. Unfortunately we only had four days here before we had to rush off to Singapore for a business meeting. We had three main things on our to do list for here: Semenggoh Nature Reserve, Bako National Park, and Food glorious food. Our first day in ... read more

DeManilafying 11-12 March 2013 Andrew got food poisoning at Manila airport on our way out of the Philippines. Fortunately by the time it manifested itself we were safely ensconced at the freshly renovated, marvellously airconditioned, super quiet Radisson Hotel Brunei in Bandar Seri Bagawan. Anyone who says Brunei is sterile and boring should spend three days in Manila before arriving in the tiny sultanate. It is the best place on earth for deManilafying. Bandar Seri Bagawan is the antithesis of Manila. The traffic is benign; it is spotless; there is no pee on the pavements; everything works; it is a small and wealthy city; and the food is great. No more pot noodles purchased from the 7eleven, YAY!! The hotel is quiet, and there is no construction site around the corner using angle grinders at midnight. ... read more

7-10 March Manila Manila is the tenth largest city in the world with a population of about 21 million - not counting the people who live on the street, I imagine. It would be interesting to see statistics on those numbers. They must be very high. Manila is also not your average South East Asian city. Actually it feels more like a Latin American city. Probably the mix of Spanish and American influences. The Philippines was a Spanish colony for 300 years before becoming an American colony and it is the only country in SE Asia (besides the new East Timor) which claims Christianity as its "official" religion. Also, unlike other SE Asian cities, the cuisine is just awful. A little known fact is that much of Manila was laid to waste during the Second World ... read more

26 February - 5 March The name Boracay conjures up dreamscapes of talcum powder white sand beaches, crystal clear sapphire waters, swaying palm trees and relaxation. The reality is quite different. I think this will be the great disappointment of Andrew's Asia trip. He has always wanted to visit this island which has been touted as having the most beautiful beaches in the world. It regularly gets awarded such accolades as "island of tranquility" " whitest beaches and clearest water in the world" "worlds best beach" etc. etc. by travel magazines and agencies. But this turns out to be a marketing fraud. To put it bluntly, Boracay is a cesspool - literally!! The oxymoron that is beautiful Boracay:Rampant and unbridled over-development has left what must once have been a paradise in a state of abject decay. ... read more

8 February - 23 February We are at the check in desk for our Kulula flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town. The young man behind the counter says: "Do you have any valuables in your checked-in luggage?" "Well, not really. Just an old iPad and my Jawbone speakers. Would that be considered valuable?" "Yes," he says. "Please could you remove them and place them in your hand luggage." "Are you serious? How is anyone going to know that they are in there? The bag is locked." "It goes through a scanner and anything like that will be picked up. The lock is useless. It will be broken." We start redistributing our wealth on the floor in front of the counter. Welcome to South Africa!! Once ensconced safely in our seats on the lime green aircraft (we ... read more
