Geo: 28.5377, -81.3774In order to make the most of EPCOT on one day, I suggested to the ladies that we needed an early departure (7:10) from the Sheraton in order to get to Animal Kingdom Lodge Kidani Village, check in, check our luggage and get to EPCOT by 9 am when it opened. Amazingly, we did depart from the Sheraton at 7:10; equally amazing it took us 90 minutes to check in. Mainly because I had made the arrangements for one villa that sleeps eight; but I wanted all to share in the cost and to have separate accounts on their Magic Bands.Magic Bands: See detailed information on Day 4 (March 25). We left our luggage at the bell stand, signed up to be texted when our room was ready and headed off to EPCOT by ... read more

Geo: 28.5377, -81.3774Mickey Mouse ears. Cinderella's Castle. Magic Kingdom fireworks. Spaceship Earth. These icons all conjure up some of the magic of “The Happiest Place on Earth”.Most South Florida seniors (I am one) travel 3.5 hours north to Orlando to experience Disney World at least once during their retirement. Sure, they were probably there when their own kids were younger. But they want to see it again … through the grandkids' eyes.Or maybe you're like me … and you make it a girls' trip. No kids. No grandkids. Just six 60-somethings who may never get to Africa but want to have the experience of having wild animals in view when they step onto their Animal Kingdom Lodge balcony and overlook the Serengeti.Either way, I bet I've learned some things you may not know about traveling to ... read more

Geo: 41.8861, -87.6364DAY TWENTY-FOUR (1/26/13) —Tokyo to Chicago on Japan Air (JAL), then American Airlines to St. LouisHomeward BoundWe have a beautiful sunrise as we land in Japan … one of those colorful straight lines you are sometimes lucky enough to see from the air. We pass through Immigration and head to another Sakura Lounge. I occupy myself cleaning up my blog; Patrick is reading his seventh book of the trip.We board our flight, scheduled to depart at 11 am. We settle in to our business class seats but struggle with getting our electronics to work. The adaptors we have used the last three weeks are delivering no power to my PC or his iPad. The flight attendance brings us JAL's adaptors and that solves the problem. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.Lunch is an odd ... read more

Geo: 35.67, 139.77DAY TWENTY-THREE (1/25/13) —Bangkok to Tokyo on Japan Air (JAL)And now, the end is near …Yesterday was our last full travel day and our last night in a hotel in SE Asia. This morning is one of preparation for departure. We pack, shifting weight from suitcase to suitcase, piling dirty clothes in black plastic bags. We meet Cheryl and Dave for breakfast and Cheryl and I head off to the Peninsula salon to get our nails done. The boys head to the ATM to get Baht (Cheryl refers to them as Baht-Man and Robin) to tip the guide, the driver and the concierge.Among the things we hope to do today is to hit the Bangkok flea market, at my friend Lois Dister's suggestion. We need Baht for that as well.A warning about Bangkok. Several trustworthy ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521DAY TWENTY-TWO (1/24/13) — Bangkok, The PeninsulaAncient CapitalToday we travel into the countryside of Thailand. Our first stop is the Summer Palace. Bang Pa-In is a complex formerly used by Thai kings, located on the Chao Phraya River bank on the way to Ayutthaya, Thailand's second capital.Originally constructed in 1632, it lay empty for many years until restored in the mid-19th century. The complex includes vast gardens, a Chinese-style royal palace and throne room; a royal residence and a pavilion constructed in the middle of a pond. Women visitors must wear skirts covering their knees but these can be borrowed. As always, shoes must be removed. On to Ayutthaya (Ah-YOU-tea-ahh), the capital of the Siamese kingdom from 1350 to 1767. Ayutthaya was friendly towards foreign traders, including surrounding neighbors and later the ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521DAY TWENTY-ONE (1/23/13) — Bangkok, The Peninsula"Wat" Not A temple in Thailand is referred to as a “wat”. We have seen many temples in our three-week stay but we know we have some of the most famous in the world ahead of us. Following breakfast at The Peninsula (by far the best breakfast buffet we have encountered, and the others haven't been shabby), we head to the lobby to meet our guide. Much to our surprise, and extreme delight, we have a new guide: Banyat. The email I wrote last night did not land on deaf ears. When Carol Pine, our agent, got to the office in Boston, she contacted her suppliers in SE Asia and voila! a new guide. He tells us he got the call at 11 pm and stayed up until ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521DAY TWENTY (1/22/13) — Bangkok, The PeninsulaThai-ing One On!We depart early from Hanoi and manage to check in, get our luggage checked and pass through security and immigration without Larry's help. We are sure missing Tauck's luggage assistance and having someone who speaks the language. But we prevail. We board a Vietnam Air flight to Bangkok and arrive uneventfully. I now have a bout of stomach upset; it's odd that I've made it three weeks only to have it show up now. Oh well.We are met by May, our young and enthusiastic guide, for our stay here in Bangkok. We have a traditional Thai greeting from a young lass who puts a variation of a floral lei around our necks.Traffic in Bangkok is abominable. There are 65 million people in Thailand and 13 of them ... read more

Geo: 21.0243, 105.855DAY NINETEEN (1/21/13) — Laos to HanoiBaby Elephant WalkToday is travel day. All of us are headed back to Hanoi and then to points beyond. The morning is at leisure. Most take one of the two half-day options:- "Rice is Life" program at Living Land Farm -- a day in the rice paddy, filled with information, personal hands on experience and tasting· Elephant Jungle Adventure: elephant trek through the rain forest at the Lao Elephant Camp We opt for the elephant ride and are delighted we do. It's an amazing and oh-so-very-fun adventure. Especially with the London ladies who are hysterically funny and speak such very proper English while they are whining. The drive is 45 minutes on some of the worst roads we've been on. The elephant walk itself is also 45 minutes … ... read more
