Geo: 41.0013, 28.9791This morning we breakfast on the rooftop terrace of our hotel. The food is very continental consisting mostly of cheeses, cold meats and bread. There are some tasty pastries that we wash down with juice and coffee. After these we head out into istanbul again. We head down to Eminou which is an area near the Galata Bridge which seperates the old and new parts of Instanbul on the European side. We are approached several times by men trying to get us on various boat trips. I did a bit of research before the trip and was told to avoid these as the trips are ivariably on very small, often unseaworthy boats.Instead we had a bit further to where the large commercial and passenger boats operate from. We find one offering a 1 1/2 hour ... read more

Geo: 41.0013, 28.9791We awake in Istanbul. When I venture out onto the balcony we have a spectacular view of both the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia in the distance. The sun is just rising and the eastern skies is coloured with pinks and oranges. We shower and dress before heading to the Oceanview for breakfast. We sit out on the Sunset Bar which has a good view of the Galata Tower. We go up to deck 11 to get some more photos of the city before returning to the cabin to gather our belongings. We head down to the Ocean Liners restaurant where Elite guests can wait for their baggage tag number to be called. They have coffee, juice & pastries there if you want them. We hear that there is a long line at immigration ... read more

Geo: 39.9825, 26.009This is our last full day on the ship and it is a day at sea as we travel further north through the Aegean Sea toward Istanbul. There is a blustery northern wind that we are sailing into which makes it seem worse than it is. The sky is pure blue with not a cloud in sight. As we wake we are passing by the Island of Chios on our starboard and Psara on our port.We are slow to get moving this morning. We don't have to rush to get off ship. Breakfast is in the Oceanview Cafe. We make a start on packing our cases which is strange for me as I only unpacked mine 3 days ago. We didn't want to be worrying about it later and when done we can relax ... read more

Geo: 36.4428, 28.23Slept really well but struggle wake up today. Bed is very comfortable. It's about 6.45am and we intended to get up at 7am to ensure we are ready for breakfast in San Marco which is only 7-8.30am. Peter is despatched for the coffees whilst I head out onto the balcony. We are already docked in Rhodes and the starboard side of the ship, where we are, has a magnificent view of the Medieval part of Rhodes town. I can see castle towers, minarets, domes and clock towers. The sun has yet to fully rise but the sky is brightening the whole time. After we shower we head to San Marco for breakfast. We return and put on sun lotion. Forecast is for a balmy 31 degrees today so we want to get off and start ... read more

Geo: 36.4168, 25.4335The sun peaks over the rim of the caldera as Connie sails into Santorini's crescent shaped bay. The whitewashed buildings of Fira the capital sparkle in the early sunshine. Apart from a smaller Seadream Yacht we are the only ship docked in Santorini. We have no real plans in Santorini today other than to get the tender boat ashore and visit Fira itself. We have been to Santorini many times before. We eat breakfast in Oceanview Cafe. There is fried bread which I have not eaten in many a year. It's great with baked beans, (English) bacon and scrambled eggs. The pastries are excellent too. We spend an hour or so back in our cabin before changing to go ashore. Connie is using the port tender boats rather than her own and they come in ... read more

Geo: 37.9792, 23.7167We are docked in Piraeus by the time we wake up. I venture onto the balcony and see we are docked close to where we docked on Splendour a few years ago. This is good as we intend to walk to the Metro station later and I have a rough idea where it is in relation to Cruise Terminal A.After Peter has got the morning Cappuccinos from Al Bacio and his breakfast tea we shower and head to San Marco for breakfast again. It's very good. We are arriving back at our room to find Dennis our stateroom attendant emerging with good news. My luggage has been delivered, only 5 days later than anticipated. We spend some time unpacking again before heading out into Athens. We walk to the Metro station at Piraeus. It's ... read more

Geo: 35.614, 22.6748Today is a sea day as we continue our journey from Messina to Athen. As we awake Connie is midway across the Ionian Sea and headed toward the south coast of the Peloponnese. We will continue on a southeasterly course and at about 7pm will pass within about 1.5 miles of Cape Tainaro which is the most southerly point of mainland Greece and of the Balkan Peninsula. At 8.30pm we will enter the strait of Elafonisos and pass between the Peloponnese and Kythira Island. We will then head north toward Athens. We breakfast in the main dining room. The Eggs Benedict, a cruise favourite of mine, is excellent and so is the French toast. Peter has his normal eggs over medium with bacon, sausage and hash browns. We then head up to the top deck ... read more

Europe » Italy September 12th 2015

Geo: 38.1922, 15.5566Connie's next port of call is Messina in Sicily. Having never been here before we are keen to explore what the largest island in the Mediterranean has to offer. Of course being here on a day trip means we can only get a taste of the island. We opted to visit the town of Taormina which lies about 40 miles south of Messina in the shadow of Mount Etna.We board a coach with some fellow guests and make our way out of Messina and head south on the motorway. People seem to drive a little crazy in Southern Europe as we overtake several vehicles with people texting as they drive. Fools. After about 40 minutes the coach starts climbing up steep narrow roads and through lengthy tunnels. We emerge near. Multi story car park ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Sorrento September 11th 2015

Geo: 40.6263, 14.3757We wake early. Connie is already anchored off Sorrento. The port here is too small for a ship this size and so we need to tender ashore. We breakfast in the Oceanview. I opt for a low carb brekkie of omelette, freshly made at the egg station, tomatoes and mushrooms. As Elite guests, being a sister company to Royal Caribbean our Diamond Plus status gives us something similar on Celebrity Cruises, we don't have to obtain tender tickets and already have some in our room and we can go ashore whenever we like rather than an allotted time. Before long we have travelled the short distance from the ship to the small harbour that sits below Sorrento. The place is busy with small ferries and boats taking people across to Naples, The Amalfi Coast and ... read more

Geo: 42.0912, 11.7968I sleep really well but still awake early. BA have tweeted overnight basically telling us there was a 'glitch' with the baggage system at Heathrow yesterday...no shit? But they will do their best to repatriate our bags as quickly as possible. Our disadvantage is that from today we are effectively moving targets hopping from port to port for the next 8 days. I receive an email to advise my case will be onboard an Alitalia flight from Rome to Naples so hopefully will reach me in nearby Sorrento on Friday. No update on Peters yet. Still one case is better than none and as we cross pack would mean we would have some items. In the BA tweet they advise us to purchase what we need for the cruise and keep the receipts and they ... read more
