Heading north to Tirano, ITALY on the border of Switzerland, the terrain changes into towering mountains with ribbons of grapevines traversing the hillsides. This quaint town of 9,000 is a relief from the hordes of tourists back in Venice. The continual rain beats loudly all evening on the sky light of our hotel room. Since the Glacier Express does not run in November, it is onto the bright red Bernina Express train for an Alpine experience, climbing from 429 meters to 2253 meters before heading down to St Moritz. As the train climbs, you are immersed in the trees with hills covered in fall leaves. It is quiet and peaceful; like being suspended in a hot air balloon. A stop is in Alp Grum at an altitude of 2,235 meters where you can get off and ... read more

In the morning, onto a late train, and arriving in Venice, ITALY. To get to the hotel, a water bus is taken a couple of stops. Such a unique city made up of 118 little islands, with streets of canals and passage by 400 bridges. The GPS has a terrible time. This City of Water is thought to have been the first international finance center created in the 9th Century. Today, over tourism is creating severe problems for Venice’s ecosystem, and UNESCO considered adding the city to the “In-Danger” list in 2017. One of the huge issues is cruise ships which drop off 30,000 sight seers per day. The City Council’s solution is to charge day visitors an access fee to reduce the city maintenance cost on Venice residents. This is expected to be implemented in ... read more

It is an hour and a half train ride into Florence, ITALY where the language spoken is Florentine. This city is where opera started in the 16th Century. It is also the birthplace of fashion, which you can still see exists today in the shops. Ponte Vecchio allows for beautiful views. It is the only bridge that was not demolished during WWII. Being Sunday, the area is packed with people, most who are enjoying the delicious food available from many of the markets. Wanting to see Siena, ITALY, it is back on the train for a short ride. The countryside is just like in the movies with rows of vineyards, cypress and stone pine trees, and medieval towns built on hill tops. On arriving in Siena, we purchase two bus tickets, get on a bus, and ... read more

Two and a half hours and we are in Rome, ITALY, which is a very busy city with a population of almost five million. This is a picture snapping haven for Chris. In front of the Trevi Fountain, the tourists are 10 rows deep to view the marble center figure of Neptune standing on rocks. SNAP. The Pantheon is a temple dedicated to “all the gods”. Light emits only through a nine meter circular opening in the dome. SNAP. Of course it is important to walk up the 12 flights of the Spanish Steps. SNAP. A new day and onto the subway to arrive at the Vatican. While standing in line, a fellow convinces us to join a group with a guide and a four hour tour. Good decision as 38,000 people visit per day. Travelling from Ascoli Piceno to Salerno, ITALY involves riding on three trains. Riding on the second train in a small compartment, the glass door opens, and a man begs us for money. I say, “We only speak English”, and he leaves. The ticket master is looking for him. The countryside slowly changes into mountains, and heavily wooded areas. Approaching the city of Salerno, there are huge manufacturing plants, some of which involve canning tomato products. The city has an important port on the Tyrrhenian Sea dealing with around 10 million tons of cargo per year. In the 16th century, Salerno founded the first medical school in the world. Entering into the center of the city is like Alice falling down the rabbit hole. The tall buildings create a warren of streets where you can be instantly ... read more

Recalculating. We have decided to deviate from our original travel route. Having Eurail passes, the train track is literally running out heading south towards Greece. Another option is to fly, and the shortest air time is to go through Turkey. That does not seem like a good idea presently. Therefore, tonight the journey will be on a ferry departing from Split, and arriving in the morning to Ancona, ITALY. Will do Greece another year. The teeny tiny cabin on the ferry has bunk beds. It brings back memories and am so glad Chris gets the top bunk and the ladder. In the middle of the night, under the moonlight, I peer at the calm inky sea. On arriving in Ancona, it is a two hour train ride into Ascoli Piceno. This charming town is where Chris’ ... read more

Today we are informed that the train is not running from Zagreb due to repairs on the tracks. Therefore, it is necessary to board a bus for two hours and then reconnect on the train. Travelling through the Croatia countryside there are rolling hills packed with trees in full autumn foliage. The scenery changes to the mountain range of Mount Mosor and then again to flat rich farmland. It is gorgeous unspoiled nature. Waking up the view is palm trees, and the Adriatic Sea, with a 24C temperature. It is time to abandon jackets and don capri’s, sandals, and sunglasses. The Riva promenade parallels the water and leads to an old city. The entire day is spent meandering down ancient corridors, visiting unique shops, and eating just outside the Palace at Villa Spiza’s. The following morning ... read more

The train travels SW from Vienna and is on one of the oldest railway tracks. It also has a dining car complete with white linen tablecloths. A first for us. The views are similar to a fairytale book, displaying castles and historical homes tucked into the lush hillsides. The train rises up towards the southern end of the Dolomite mountains. We envision what people were seeing when they travelled this route on the Orient Express. We are not quite sure what to think entering the city of Zagreb, CROATIA. It is the absolute opposite of Vienna’s sparkle and sophistication. The following morning, the coffee house cashier informs us that we need to pay in cash, and they accept no credit cards or euro’s. That leaves us without the ability to pay. But they say no problem, ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna October 9th 2019

Leaving the Czech Republic behind, a few hours later, the train crosses the border and into Wien, better known as Vienna, AUSTRIA, founded in the first Century AD. This very liveable city is also known as the city of music and dreams as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Freud all worked here. It is lovely to hear the clip clopping of the horses pulling carts down the cobblestone streets, and the church bells ringing on the hour. It is also where coffee houses originated centuries ago, creating part of the Viennese charm. First stop is to the Stephansdom Crypt which is still used as a burial spot for Archbishop’s today. In one section, hermetically sealed metal jars store the organs and hearts of royalty, much like the ancient Egyptian traditions. During the outbreak of the bubonic ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague » Old Town October 7th 2019

The date is October 5th, so it is my birthday. At breakfast in the Berlin Hotel restaurant the waiters serve me a huge piece of cake. Back on the train to land in Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC, with a temperature of 8 degrees C, and a city that was once home to the slave market. In the morning, it is down to old town. Walking, every time you look up, left or right, or turn a corner, there is something amazing to look at. The architecture is gorgeous, and eye candy for every person and photographer. Designed in the Gothic style is the Charles Bridge lined with 17th Century Baroque statues. There are many artists and musicians along the way. We stumble on the Ice Pub, and decide to give it a go. Gloves, and a poncho ... read more
