Day two…. We woke up early today excited to have a hot breakfast Hampton Inn style only to be disappointed. For some reason this Hampton Inn’s definition of a hot breakfast consists of fresh waffles, but microwaved pancakes, chicken biscuits and French toast. Not very hot and not very good. We were disappointed, but had a full day ahead of us, so we ate there anyways. At least the coffee was decent. We checked in at Biltmore, which was about a 10 minute drive from Flectcher. Very close and very convienent. Once we got past the front gates of the estate, it was another 2 mile drive thru the woods to get to the parking lot. In my mind, it was very Ireland-esque. You had tall trees, cobblestone bridges and lots of greenery…. All leading up to ... read more

7 hours and 59 minutes... that's the amount of time that it takes to travel from Alexandria, VA to Asheville, NC. On Saturday, March 10th we embarked on this road trip. 7 hours and 59 minutes sounds a little daunting, but with good company and a comfortable car... all is good. We drove for 4.5 hours and did a pit stop in Durham. We stopped by Durham for lunch at the Backyard BBQ. This was a big hit amongst the TripAdvisor forum. It's a is family owned-hole in the wall dive that had Pork Barbeque, Ribs, Smoked BBQ Chicken and Beef Brisket. Good ole southern cooking. How could we pass this up. So we didn't. We had BBQ Chicken with corn and cole slaw, Beef Ribs with mac and cheese and fried okra and Pork BBQ ... read more

Final day... boy what a quick trip this was... it seemed like just yesterday that we checked in... but I guess that's what weekend getaways are all about... activity filled and quick to end.... We had breakfast again in the lobby before checking out. Same stuff, still good. After breakfast, we hit the road. The game plan for today.... head into Old Port in downtown Portland, then head to airport for home. We parked the car along commercial street and walked around Old Port for a bit. Not much happening. Saw a cruise ship, went into a public market, saw few boutique shops, etc.... Portland is famous for their Whoopie pies, so we decided to try some. Bobby Flay had a Whoopie Pie throwdown with the Cranberry Island Kitchen... which just happens to be in Portland. ... read more

Day 2 began with an 8:00 breakfast meet up. Embassy Suites offered breakfast buffet everyday. So after everyone's allotted 30 minute morning time was completed, we headed downstairs to begin our day. The breakfast set up was very good. There was scambled eggs, home fries, sausage, bacon, french toast, fresh waffles and made to order omelets. All very good... all eaten = too full yet again. After breakfast, we headed out to Freeport. Freeport, ME was about 30 minutes away from Portland and was where the flagship LL Bean store was at; it's opened 24 hours and it had the big LL Bean boot in front. It was also the place where there were more outlets.... Yay for more outlets. We hit the LL Bean outlet, AF, North Face, Patagonia, and J. J. Coombes. Because we ... read more

So the morning started with an early morning (by Sherry standards) start. Mary, Aunt Sue and I headed off to BWI to catch a 9:20 flight to Manchester, NH. I ran about 5 minutes behind and we needed to make a pit-stop at my Aunt's house, so that meant that Betsy had about 30 minutes of Betsy time before we all met up. It was about an hour flight from BWI to Manchester. So we got to Manchester about 10:30ish. We got our rental car and we were off. We decided to take the more scenic more coastal road to Portland. So Mary took us along Route 1, but before we made it to Route 1, we saw Kittery Outlets and we had to stop. Who could refuse??? Kittery was in the town of York and ... read more

Officially Happy Easter to everyone back home! Here's hoping that everyone had a wonderful day! Across the waters in London, Easter was a good day. It started out with the Cadbury egg waking up with kids. It appears that the Easter Bunny found its way to Kristen and Ryan... even way over here in London. I tried to convince the Bunny to hide the eggs in the hotel room, but it was hard to gauge what was "clean" and what wasn't. Nevertheless, Kristen and Ryan each got a Cadbury Caramel Egg to start of their Easter morning. We had breakfast downstairs in our hotel. They had a continental breakfast buffet for 14 pounds and if you wanted to add eggs, you needed to add an additional 4 pounds. Very expensive, but we weren't sure what restaurants ... read more

Early Riser gets the worm? I think that's the cliche isn't it? Well, I was certainly amongst the early risers this morning. Miss guaged the time difference on my ipod and ended up rising at 5:30 AM versus my desired 6:30 AM wake up time. We needed to our tour stop no later than 8:20 today and we wanted to get breakfast first, so we agreed to meet up at 7:00 to allow for time to eat McDs and time for any delays on the tube station. We were being picked up near the Greater Portland Street tube station and it was a new line for us, so we decided to give it plenty of time. Today was the day that we had the guided tour to Stonehenge and Bath. We hopped on our luxury coach ... read more

Y - M - C - A!! Yep, the brits were playing YMCA as part of the ceremony of the changing of the guard. Kinda funny considering the ceremony is supposed to be steeped in tradition, but I guess you have to change it up somehow.... So in case you haven't figured out, we started the day out today at Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guards. There were plenty of people crowded in trying to get a glimpse. I managed to snag a place right by the side gates. So I got a good video of the band and horses marching in. The rest of the gang were by the side, so they had a better glimpse of the ceremony. Some funny tidbits.... The Bobbies were trying to control the crowd. They moved ... read more

In honor of the queen's birthday today, there were plenty of celebrations throughout London. We happened to be at the Tower of London and was able to witness a 62 gun salute. The basic Royal Salute is 21 rounds, but at the Tower of London, you add an extra 20 because the Tower is a Royal Palace Fortress and another 21 for the City of London. It was neat. Quite loud, but neat to witness the ceremony. No Queen though, but the guns were ablazin! Because our Tower of London experience centered around the salute as well as the desire to climb the steps of St. Paul, the Tower of London was a quick walk by. We walked along the perimeter of the Fortress a little bit. Was hoping to get to see the crown jewels, ... read more

Happy Wednesday night one and all. Today we decided to take have a leisurely morning. We were headed to Windsor and decided that it was pretty much going to be the activity for the day, so it was good/ok to have a leisurely morning. PLUS, we saw that there was a market around our tube station from 10-3. We were hoping to have breakfast there. The sign said that the market was next to the theater. We went next to the Odeon theater and there was no market, so we decided to try trusty ole McD. No dice. We got there after the breakfast time. So Kristen suggested we head back to Cafe Pasticcio. What beats a fried eggs and toast? Fried eggs, toast and SAUSGE, with a shared slice of ham (Thanks Auntie.) Slurp that ... read more
