Comlementary desert and drink--Yes! So interesting and sad that the inland food, people, sites were so much better inland than on the coast where there were probably more tourists (to escape the 37C heat). Oh well, great that you got to visit both! But what is with the laundry prices--hard to believe they'd have any customers! I love these places where churches and mosques morph into one another over time. There was one in Toledo, Spain, that had been a synagogue, then a mosque, then a church and now a museum. The world is turning atheist!
The heart of Cyprus This is an area I know nothing about, so thanks for the background/historical details. Love the sound of the big platters with free dessert and a shot of liquor! And how funny that they sent Alexander Downer over there - I can just imagine the supercilious tone he would have taken with them :)
What a Downer Yea, I couldn't believe that they sent the twit over to help them make peace. I think it was about 18 months later I read a large article about how it was all going and it was just funny how both sides hated him, mainly because he wouldn't even turn up for the meetings. In the end through his absence the sides started talking so I guess you could say "Mission Accomplished".
Too true Wouldn't the "Sound of Music" been a better movie if she had sung "A mouth full of profanity helps the medicine go down" to the tune of a sea shanty.
Nice one guys!!! The pic's give the town a nice Mediterranean feel, not English at all. Love that you popped into the shelter, hmmm..... let's hope it presents a caring and hopeful future for all its residents. The water looks so clear and beautiful, even around the castle, the moat? Love the mosaic's, gorgeous and the ruins. Again I have to say, love the rant Scotty, your too funny. Step with care :)
Step with care? You would think a guy my age would know how to walk down a flight of stairs. Shelley has given up the booze for a bit and I think she is doing it in case I roll my ankle again she can carry me home...or maybe its because she can just walk away and leave me?
Cyprus Glad you are getting around better. I think resting and enjoying the pub crawl has been medicinal. Maybe you should write a journal article on the healing effects for a medical journal. Better living through chemistry.
Best seller What a brilliant idea! I could write up a medical journal that not only proves the effect of my healing methods but also maps out a pub crawl in any city in the world so others can heal themselves. So not only would I get distinguished educated medical professors reading it but also alcoholic slobs like me.
Animal Shelter Cyprus is over run by cats we just wished people would get them "fixed". We thought we would go to the animal shelter to give a hand but was sort of met with a cold shoulder, (except for the cat lady), which was a bit odd.
Very trippy labyrinth! Amazing that this is the same design as the 13c labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral--very curious, and not all French cathedral labyrinths have this design! The most I found on google was that the Chartres labyrinth was probably based on ones in 12c Italian churches; presumably these architects had seen this Roman one on Cyprus or ones like it. This and the other mosaics are in such fab condition. Glad Scott's ankle is better, and a resort with a pool is a brilliant place to recuperate!
Circle of life Most of the best mosaics were undercover thankfully, but this one unfortunately was out in the open, and it was such a great piece of work. It was in the corner of a roman home that had 74 rooms, which had both of us thinking the owner must have been the Bill Gates of Pafos. I just had this image of the team of slaves out daily mopping these incredible mosaics and probably cursing them. The house if I remember was from the 4th Century so I guess this was numero uno. If in Pafos would recommend seeing these mosaics, unsure if I would recommend the town, but that might just be me.
Mini Blackpool How funny that you got a taste of England in the middle of Cyprus :) I wonder how these pockets of British expats will cope after/if Brexit goes ahead. Glad to see Scott's foot is on the mend.
Brexit Panic Brexit was the main topic of conversation, and as you can imagine no one really knows what to do or what will happen, and sort of guessed these conversations were happening all over Europe. It was a strange experience for us, mainly because we hadn't expected so many Poms in Cyprus, but I guess if I had done my research it wouldn't have been such a shock.
Ouch!!! You gotta love the Greeks, or hate them! Hope your ankle's better Scotty. The blue water back drop looks lovely, I'm a little jealous of the heat as it's freezing here so much so that my bones hurt ha. You can really notice the price change hey, glad to here your not scrimping on the good stuff. The apartment sounds nice and again thanks for the history down date :) xx
Oi, you, get over here In the town of Pafos right now and we have yet to hear a spoken word of Greek. Sort of feel like we have somehow gone through a worm tunnel and turned up in Dorset. It is rather strange to be in a town that is completely and utterly pommie.
Fantastic!!!! Absolutely love this rant! Your so funny Scotty. More shoes Shelly :))). I love Yerevan! The churches in their simplicity are just beautiful and I love the history telling, thank you. Little and big Ararat look amazing without or without the ark?. I was expecting the lance tip to be more piercing and the ark treasure more like a piece of driftwood, hmmm interesting. Love the additional pictures also. I would love to visit this city, truly. The cable car experience looked incredible. Take care x
Gardening for Jesus Yes Yerevan was a great city and although it didn't have the large number of tourist cafes and such the place had a great vibe and you felt more like you were in Europe. As for the Lance, I am with you, I looked at it and went "that's not a lance" ,it actually looks more like a gardening implement.
Are you getting old? Seems as if you can't take a slight tumble down the stairs anymore! As we age we don't bounce as well. Too bad we don't have that on video. I'll bet it was hilarious. Glad you are starting to feel better. I'll bet some of those delightful sausages and a couple of cold adult beverages will have you feeling better soon. Don't you hate it when you don't head the warning of the lovely Shelly and you have to tell all of us about the outcomes! The story made for a great blog. Enjoy the food. Eager to see what you get into next.
them old bones A video of my fall would have probably been both spectacular and hilarious as gravity works well on my bod and I think it was more plummet than fall. You may have enjoyed this blog but the next one is going to be extremely boring as we have spent the last two days doing nothing but resting my foot. It is on the mend now and I can walk normally - well as normal as I ever have - and hopefully we will be out sight seeing again soon.
Fantastic!!!! I absolutely loved this rant. Loved the bits of history, the photo's are exceptional and the churches look like simple architectural masterpieces. Scotty your so funny :)). I would have thought the lance of god's enemies would have had a more piercing shape to it and Noah's piecing would have been a piece of drift wood? Go figure, I'm a little the same when it comes to the faith, hard to believe it all but effeminately and very interesting interpretation of life. The wine...hahahaha..... I loved this place, would love to visit it one day xx
Love this place! Wow!!! But first of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHELLY!!!! Ha, that was a funny comment on the fountain of youth...hmmmmm.....I love the lion, how cool is that. The Epic FAT roman is interesting? Why such fat? Love the church and the inside of it looks amazing. Temple looks nice also. The bread?, maybe the tourist thought it was a bit of a communion thing given your in a historically iconic Christian country? Nahh, they are just outta control people :). Nice selfie, hair looks good :). Nice pic of Ararat. It's freezing here! love us 3 xxx
Feeding time at the Zoo Nothing is worse than when you are in a tour group and the word "Free" is mentioned, you just have to stand back and gawk at the carnage. As for the fountain of youth I had to restrain Shelley from going for a swim, she was even talking about filling our water bottle with the stuff. As for her hair, the photo makes it look better than it is, and she is going to get it done again soon.
