A fellow traveler's ramblings - From: Top of the Bottom
Shauna, Shauna, Shauna... You do your (not quite) old aunt proud. If you had a comment for every time I've looked at your blog and (re)lived my life through yours... you'd have a permanent block on my e-mail address... You'd just get tired of hearing from me so often! Seriously though, I'm so proud of you. You no doubt have days when you think you were a fool to have ever left that safe harbour back on Vancouver Island... but then, (maybe through your tears...) you catch a glimpse of some incredible sight and your wanderlust is back in gear. Ah I remember this so well from my days on the road. As long ago as that was... I still can recall them as clearly as if they happened yesterday. I remember what I wore, who I was with and what we ate... most of all, I remember the BIG WARM FULL feeling that I was exactly where I needed to be (even though I might not have been "exactly sure" where I was...) I may not be making much sense but I feel you know just what I'm talking about. You know Dear... travel alters the spirit. The wonder never completely leaves, even long after the traveler "settles down"... does the marriage thing... the career thing... the 2 kids thing... etc... etc... The traveler has all those days and nights to look back on and they sustain her through dirty diapers, boring board meetings and all of life's other mundane moments... This altered state is also easily recognized in others. I so-o-o-o-o see it in you. When you go to Copenhagen and must discipline yourself to study, get the grades, finish the program... know one thing for sure... this is a good thing. Life must have balance and you will be better for the ballast this stage of your life will give you. I'll say it again... Shauna, I'm so proud of you. “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.” My love and admiration always... Auntie Joany

Dollar-a-day rentals - From: Great Barrier Reef and Road Trip to Cairns
Check out: standbycars.com and appollo rentals. You have to have a flexible schedule, as the postings usually only give a couple of weeks notice. The Brisbane-Cairns route is a fairly common one though, so you shouldn't have a problem. Good Luck!

So I've decided I'm not ready to leave Brisbane yet after all, and why should I if I don't want to, right?? Having way too much fun, and haven't crossed all the to do's off my list here yet. When I do leave Brisbane though, I won't be heading home just yet, still have to make it to NZ. Can you believe I've been gone almost a year!! Crazy.

Things that kill you in Oz. - From: Camping Downunder
I was watching this National Geographic show last night on Australia. You should see all the critters they have there that can do you in. They've got lethal jellyfish. What they bump off, the great white will eat. In the tidal pools are blue-ringed octopi that can do you in in a couple of hours. They have god-only-knows how many different kinds of spiders, snakes and frogs that can poison you. Watch where you step!...........but have fun!

Sand Dunes? - From: Fishsauce and Sand dunes all under the same roof!
Somehow, I never pictured sand dunes as part of the Vietnamese landscape, now the baskets of stinky rotting fish, well yes, that I can imagine. the sand dunes look like maybe you took that picture in Dubai, It sounds like the rules of the road there are pretty much as they are in Mexico, while driving identify your intentions, whatever they may be by honking, then do it! Waiting patiently on your next entry. Love Mom XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOOXXOXOXO

Man you're covering some ground, girl! - From: Thailand highlights and lowlights
Wow you're a one woman whirlwind! I still have such a hard time believing you're doing all this travelling. I do enjoy reading about it though. Not much is new here in boring old Canada. You might have heard already, but uncle Grant has endured a 7 hour back operation and everything seems to be ok so far. Hopefully it fixes his pain. So do you think you'll ever come home? It must be a toss up, more new adventures or back home to family and friends. I think I'd be going for the more adventures option. Though you do have one great family! Take care! Jody

So good to hear your voice on the phone, but also so much fun to read about your adventures. It seems everywhere you go, you say, " I'm going to be so sad to leave here..." Such a tough life you're living right now eh Shauna Bear? And to think you're missing out on all this wild and woolly west coast weather laying there on the sunny beaches of Thailand. Can't wait to hear your voice again (hopefully skype) and to read more. love your rain soaked, wind swept momma XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

My little Olive Oil - From: The Italian Job
Hi Darlin! I know I just spoke to you on the phone this a.m. Great to be able to talk to you every day! for all of you out there, Shauna's WWOOFing adventure ends Nov. 20th, You can phone her, get a phone card for Europe, so cheap! The phone # is 011- 39- 0575614190. Just follow the directions they give you. mine is a 7-11" Call Home to Europe", card and for $5 you get hours and hours. Remember that she is 9 hours ahead in time, I usually call about 7-8 a.m. our time, Shauna's usually done her "tough" day of olive harvesting by then. Shauna, I love you so much and miss you more than you will ever know. However, I'm also jealous and excited at the same time. It's wonderful to be able to live vicariously through you!!! WWOOFing sounds so great and the family you're with sound like wonderful people, and such a bonus that they are fluent in English. I look forward to some e-mails and blogs when you get to Torino, I'm getting wireless internet so that while I'm recouping from my surgery I can lay in bed and e-mail you forever, oh, you lucky girl... Love you, Miss you, I see you in my dreams every night. You're Mom XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

Ah Shawna... - From: Beautiful Barcelona
Ah Shauna... how your stories take me back in time... one day I'll maybe tell you a few things you never knew about your dear auntie! I don't have to urge you to enjoy yourself to the fullest because it sounds as though you're having a thoroughly fabulous time! Uncle Jorge and I were in Europe this summer... I think if I had to name a favourite place, it would be Florence. We "pretended" we were Florentines and ate in little tavernas and drank lots of the local "rosso". It was too much fun! We also saw such gorgeous art and heard wonderful music... The evening of Stephanie & Ben's wedding, we listened to an open air piano recital as we feasted on seafood pasta... Back here on "Planet Merida"... all's very well - Carlos & Maggie are happy and our college has had a great start-up. All my love to you and as we said in the 70s... keep on truckin'

Thanks Auntie Shiela, and good call on the hotel, I might be up for that soon. This budget thing sucks! But its fun too. I have to admit, drinking wine out of a tetra pack for one euro is definitely living! Let me know about the Greek contact when you get the chance. Hope all is well. Love to both you and uncle. Ciao
