Europe September 15th 2010

Gday All, We have been having a great time, living it up in some pretty awesome countries. Our last blog had us in Copenhagen where we dined with the princess, giving her our opinion on the ridiculous prices in Denmark. Seriously a tough city on the back pocket. However, it really is pretty and very clean. From Copenhagen we travelled to Hamburg Germany, where we caught up with a friend for dinner. Hamburg is pretty funky and much more affordable that the scandinavian countries. After only one night in Hamburg, we travelled to Berlin, undoubtably one of the most interesting places visited. We visited the remains of the Berlin wall, and also made a trip out to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. The camp is an eery place, but was worth a visit. After Berlin we ventured ... read more

Europe September 5th 2010

Gday All, All aboard the viking express, we're heading north into Kroner country. After a week or so in Belgium and the Netherlands we have sailed through Norway, spent some time in Sweden and have just pulled into Denmark (I said pulled). It's been a few weeks since blogging so here is a quick update. In Brussells we learnt some history of Napolean's defeat at Waterloo, went to a street that seemed to sell nothing but chocolates and saw a statue of a boy weeing. From Brussells we trained it to Bruges, where the pace of things changed a bit. We had access to bikes and leisurely rode through the city and took some time to enjoy a completly different Belgium experience. Suddenly the predominant language changes from French to Dutch and you move from a ... read more

Europe August 20th 2010

Gday all, We have been venturing through Scotland over the last week and wow what a beautiful country. From Belfast we caught the ferry over to Scotland and drove up to Edinburgh, where the Fringe festival was in full swing. Edinburgh completely suprised us. It is one happening town, with loads to do and heaps of sights. There is amazing buildings in every direction qnd the people were extremely friendly. We hqppily ate scrumptious pies, sipped whisky and watched free street performers. Though its one drawbqck is the weather. Raincoats are a must. From Edinburgh we drove to Port Augustus, famous for Nessie the serpent of the deep. I managed to sight Nessie and became the first bloke to ride it. True story. Though the photos Hayley got of me riding him have mysteriously been lost ... read more

Europe August 10th 2010

Gday All, It's been hard to find the time to blog but I think an update is in order. Since finishing up in Spain Hayley and I caught a train to Toulouse, rented a car and drove to St Tropez in France. St Tropez was beautiful for swimming and we managed to find accomodation just outside town. The town is full of self-indulgent billionaires and their entourage, but it's worth a visit. Following St Tropez we returned our car and caught a train to Paris. We found the locals to be friendly, particulary when we used some key French phrases giving the impression we were making an effort. I think our favourites were "C'est combien" (how much) and "Je ne comprehends pa" (I don't understand). After some time visting all the sights we got a car ... read more

Europe » Spain August 3rd 2010

Gday All, Hayley and I have been busy adventurers and haven't had the time to update the blog. But, in the last 2 or more weeks we have been through Spain and France. In Spain our adventure started in Barcelona, which was friendly and modern. The paella was delicious and the sangria potent. I really liked Barcelona, it reminded me of a really big st kilda. It sits right on a really beautiful harbour and you get a mix of the alternative and the classy stuff. We did however stay in a hotel that was lop-sided. From Barcelona we travelled to Madrid, which had some spectacular buildings, but with its high unemployment, you feel consious of your wallet all the time. After Madrid we travelled by Fast train to San Sebastian for some beach and sangria. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto July 18th 2010

Gday All, Venice has lifted our impression of Italy. It is a beautiful city. We arrived on the same day as a huge festival which as far as I know celebrates the end of the Plague back in 1576. Only Venetians can take part but the toursits can enjoy from the banks of the Canal Grande. It's hot in Venice, but tolerable compared to the big city. Sean and Hayley... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto July 17th 2010

Gday All, We have just arrived in beautiful Venice, the last of our stops in Italy. We have been slightly dissapointed in the Italy portion of the adventure, with the congestion, expense and heat of the big cities being not to our liking. Our adventure began in Rome, where we saw the must-see sights, but found the people unfriendly, the food ordinary and heat unbearable. The local Italian trade give the impression they are over all tourists and you fell a bit like cattle being mustered into a corner. With our strict budget, and our searching we struggled to find descent authentic Italian food. Following Rome, we drove into the Tuscany region and got our first amazing meal in Cortoona and at a great price. We were planning to stay in Tuscany for 2 nights but ... read more

Europe » Greece July 9th 2010

Gday All, Our time in Greece is almost over, but we have had a fantastic adventure. It is an amazing country that is full of surprises and incredible sights. We have literally made our way through all of Greece, some by car, ferry, train and quad bike. We have spent the last three days travelling by car everywhere. I have to say that the Greeks drive really fast and have no regard for the speed limits. We heard from a local that "Greece is a country of suggestions", and when it comes to road rules, particularly in the country, that statement is true. "We suggest you do 60, but if you want to do 140 then that's all good". I became convinced for a while that the speed signs were in miles because the slow drivers ... read more

Europe » Greece July 3rd 2010

Gday All, We're in Greece, and after spending 2 nights in Athens, we have just arrived in Santorini. We found Athens to be suprisingly beautiful. The view of the city as the sun set from the Acropolis was awesome. The shear size of the city was very unexpected. From the Acropolis you just look out on a sea of congested white buildings all about 4 stories high. We went on a walking tour of Athens, learning a bit about the place, its history and had seroiusly tired legs climbing the Acropolis and meandering our way through the busy side-streets. The only time the streets were quiet was when everybody, literally everybody stopped for the World Cup, despite Greece already being eliminated. We have just settled into our hotel in Santorini, and rented a quad bike. As ... read more
