Numbat I remember sitting in my car watching a Numbat with my kids not.
knowing what it was till we asked the caretakers.
I have been there twice and truly liked the place.
Re : Indo/Malay Gracias for the wealth of SE Asia/Autralasian flora/fauna info. Stumbled upon your blog before Indo/png earlier this year. Was of tremendous help in picking/choosing islands as my interest is purely wildlife. Muchos gracias once again.
hey man, enjoyed the read. i'm a fellow appreciator of wild animals and wild spaces and going to Baluran this weekend. Wish me luck on seeing some hornbills! Cheers.
I have a small LED torch, an LED headlamp, and a big LED torch (750 lumens; lights up like car headlights!). Much better than my old Dolphin torch, and much easier to put in my pack. Sucks the batteries dry super-quick though!

Well, at least you're warm ... cos we've had the biggest snow storm in 40 years over here! Snow from Auckland to Invercargill ... Pretty cold in Wellington with no power, but the kids loved it.
ha sounds like a good trip so far, im still considering Indonesia next year though from the sounds of things Sir Lanka may be better.
well you just missed it, its snowing in wellington!
hello i'm indonesian, but I have never been to Way Kambas, it feels like to go there but I have less information, if for a little adventure with my funds are advised to go there? I like photography, whether for the object image a lot? helped with this information
the place to hang out We had the most wonderful time at the Cafe. Anita went all out when we celebrated my husband's birthday there. It was just wonderful decor & food & the best company. Definitely a great place to meet in Bukit Tinggi.
thanx Thank you so much, Iam a USP student and i was struggling with my assignment on the animal life in Fiji and your blog has helped me heaps.
Thank you very much, hope you continue your good work here in our beautiful island nation
Kind regards
its just a 230mm lens. This particular male was in the trees by the restaurant area. In general I found the proboscis monkeys at Bako to be difficult to photograph as they tended to either stay behind branches and leaves, or to silhouette themselves against the sun.
amazing this site helpded mev with everythin n i jst wanna saayy thxx cause i would've got in deep troubs cause ma homework was due in n i found all vmy information on here n as i said b4 thxx it really helped me wit my homework
how did you get this shot? I was in Borneo last summer but had such a hard time getting a decent shot of these guys as they stayed quite high in the canopy. What kind of lens did you use?
I stayed at the same place in Kutacane (although the name was variously spelled Maroon or Marron depending on which sign you were looking at). It's still 60,000rp per night. Re oil-palm plantations, there are actually several large ones along the bus route between Bukittinggi and Medan but I think I was asleep for most of that trip and therefore didn't know of them when I wrote this blog page. On the return trip and the return-return trip I certainly saw them though
Hi,
All the palm plantations you missed out on seeing are on the way to Bukit Lawang ( 3-4 hrs by bus from Medan) and also on the way from Medan to Tangkahan ( 5 hrs by bus from Medan.) Thousands of them.
Where did you stay in Kutacane? Interested to know as I stayed by choice in Kutacane in November 2006 so I could let other travellers know there was accomodation there. My hotel was the Marron- about 60,000 rupiah per night.
In Ketambe I stayed with Pak Mus and family in the bungalows nestled amongst his truly beautiful gardens.
Loved reading your blog brought back lot sof memories.

I live in New Zealand. I started this blog when going on a 2006 trip through southeast Asia for three months to see the wildlife. Since then I've been on more trips through NZ, Fiji, New Caledonia, Australia and back to Asia a few times looking for animals. Anyone who is not interested in animals and who thinks nature is a waste of space shouldn't be reading this blog. Go back to your bars and your temples and your massage parlours; the kind of birds I'm contemplating would not excite you. ... full info
