The people in Trinidad are absolutely the nicest people on the face of the earth. I want to move here immediately. But first, let me tell you about it... I sat next to a really nice Trinidadian on the plane, not that I really chat it up with people on planes, but we talked toward the end of the flight and turns out she is in policy and her sister works for the people that pay my bills former owner in New York and knows this Trinidadian at my work that I know. Trinidad... Oh Trinidad. The people in Trinidad are absolutely the nicest people on the face of the earth. I want to move here immediately. But first, let me tell you about it... I sat next to a really nice Trinidadian on the plane, not that I really chat it up with people on planes, but we talked toward the end of the flight and turns out she is in policy and her sister works for Deloitte (EMG's former owner) in New York and knows this Trinidadian at EMG named XXX that I know. So Hot That

 Asia » Thailand » Central » Bangkok
I wanted to press my cheek, my throat, my lungs to the cool linoleum floor of the office building hot. Am I talking about the weather? Nope. Today for lunch I had something a little different. Thinking that I was all cool because the other day I had added chili's to the soup I got out on the street, I thought I could handle it. Today Koon Jude and I had lunch together. The waitress told him that they couldn't make it that un-spicy. I told KJ not to worry about it. I can handle this. So all around us at [View Full Entry]

Is Asia For Me, Part II

 Asia » Thailand » Central » Bangkok
Perhaps my tongue in cheek-ness wasn't evident in my email, as I meant it to be. Just in case I've left the wrong impression, I'm having a terrific time, meeting lots of knowledgeable people, and like Thailand and Asia. I think because I've been all alone here for the last two weeks or so, I just want someone to affirm to me that I am behaving somewhat appropriately (taking my shoes off when I'm supposed to, greeting people appropriately, etc.). I also want everyone, and maybe this will just mean more to Netzers who are familiar with the Friday Night Rent [View Full Entry]

Is Asia For Me

 Asia » Thailand » Central » Bangkok
No, I don't think so, or at least Thailand. For those of you that have been following along in the past emails... There is just something that doesn't sit well with me in this particular part of Asia. It might be the deference shown, the respect, I'm not sure. Maybe it's because the alphabet is different and I have no inkling of what is being said or being offered. The extent of my Thai remains, hello, goodbye, thank you. And in a conversation I've learned to murmur a lot and make sounds that resemble "ka ka ka" and "ka boom ka". [View Full Entry]

While You Were Sleeping

 Asia » Thailand » Central » Bangkok
(well, at least most of you)... Let's see, so what did I do this weekend. Saturday I decided to head over to the weekend market. I had read and heard all about it, but that did not prepare me adequately for what I encountered... So I disembark at the SkyTrain terminus, Mo Chit. I walk down the steps with the other throngs of people. I'm walking around in this park, but I don't see anything that resembles a market, as of yet. So I think I see it and I walk in. It's dark, jampacked with people, and hotter than h-e-l-l. [View Full Entry]

All the News from Thailand

 Asia » Thailand » Central » Bangkok
So, I wish I had something exciting to report... But I haven't been too touristy, I've tried to do some work and remember that it isn't vacation. So yesterday, which was Tuesday, because I'm trying to keep track, I decided to venture forth for lunch. I walked around, had an iced coffee off the street, it was tasty. Being a "farang" which is foreigner, I got the plastic cup to go with it. Just like in Peru, people love little plastic baggies with straws to drink out of. I don't know if it is cheaper or what the deal is... Regardless, [View Full Entry]

Today's Email from Bangkok

 Asia » Thailand » Central » Bangkok
Today in Bangkok, I was on a mission, to get the SIM card for the work cell phone. It turned out to be harder than I thought, so I decided to head to see some sights and worry about it later. The concierge was less than forthcoming about how to get around, so I just started walking in the direction of what seemed to be the skyrail from my 19th floor view. Locating the skyrail, I hopped on the skyrail and rode over to the central boat terminal to take the boat taxis down the Chao Praya river to some of [View Full Entry]

Serve it room temp

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
Today the dad made pisco sours at lunch, totally cool and very very good might I add. Did I mention the alpaca sweater was the best purchase ever? I am moderately warm in the evenings now! To take a shower you have to flip up an electric switch above the shower to activate the hotwater. It is a little dangerous, the whole electricity and water combo thing, but whatever. Yesterday I had a warm shower. I almost cried I was so happy! Then I went and sat in the courtyard and let my hair dry. I also snuck my feet out [View Full Entry]

Sorry for the delay. I think when I last wrote, I was crawling on the floor to a bathroom that had no water in order to get sick. My experience with the Peruvian healthcare system was, well maybe we should we just call it "special". It was comprised of a morning at school, stretched out on 5 chairs pushed together for my exam. I then wandered around looking for a lab to deliver my "specimen". My first parasite. I was excited. It's like the Red Badge of Courage for those in development work. As my final week of classes drew to [View Full Entry]
