Wow thanks for sharing that. You really don't hear about these things and it continues to surprise me how people involved in some of the most outrageous crimes are still politically active, with hardly a stain to their name. How could this happen??

man, that was such a sad, concise blog. i almost feel bad that you're leaving nica. but, you both are masters of your destinies, and i have no doubt you are following your hearts to something just as good, or better. you have best wishes and greetings from mikey and liz, sophie and ross, kevin and haley, and boner and annika (his wife), and of course, from me. i know you guys dont make it to myspace much and i dont blame you, but its an easy place to post pics on the go, so all the pics i've managed to upload are there if your interested in a painful meandering to the 'space. dont expect any pics of dubai, tragically, and perhaps a bit awesomely, i spent too much time having my flights delayed, and we spent too much time partying when i actually did get there, to take any pics. heres hoping i get a job with adult swim and can join you for some sweet tea and hush puppies in the dirty dirty.

open your heart
open your heart and make a difference to people you meet along the way. No matter how small your contribution, you have made a difference in his/her family lives. You should be proud that you have made a difference to someone lives. when I travel I open my heart listen to my heart/God ,because you will never know what changes you can make to someone lives especially in those poor countires.

Donde esta la parada de Autobuses?
I lived in Cuernavaca for a little while and I often rode the bus to school. Your story was giving me flashbacks. I have a sweet pic of a custom shift stick from one of the buses that was like a snow-globe with the "our lady of Guadalupe" on the inside.

While I think that to a certain extent, the wealth of some in America does allow them to better "ride out" natural disasters, a few more things to consider in the Felix v. Katrina comparison are geography and demographics. The United States is HUGE compared to Nicaragua, and Katrina only hit a small part of it. Not only was it a small part, but it was relatively unimportant in the macro economic sense. The gulf coast is hardly as big of a cog in the US economic engine as the agricultural region you describe in Nicaland. Even the impact on oil was minimized because of the giagantic web that the US weaves in the petrol economy. We're getting oil domestically, from the Middle East, and from South America. Although it no doubt affected prices, it did not kneecap the average motorist because the US is able to easily obtain oil from other sources. A country without the government ties and ueber-multinational companies might not be able to do it. To me the poor in the US fair the same in a disaster setting as they do in the greater politcal realm...they just aren't important.

i love how everybody else in ricks picture has a totally different type of look on their face. you look like when i see random people taking photos and i just jump in the group to get in the shot. you should consider getting a set of "your picture has just been ruined by: rick latorra" cards. if i ever get on the ball getting mine ill see if i can hook you up.

very interesting
Sarah, I've often thought the same thing as you about CAFTA and NAFTA but it is not something I've really looked into. These agreements were, from what I've seen, drafted by wealthy countries with an eye to their own interests and sold based on the usual guise of keeping the free market "free". I also think you make a good point that the working class often shoulders more of the burden of a natural disaster than a wealthier population.
