The AmaDara stopped in Phnom Penh - a very modern city with construction everywhere! It bears witness as to how far Vietnam has recovered since the war. Phnom Penh is home to many ex-pats from Australia, England, Europe and North America due to the low cost of living here. Lots of modern high rise condos are doting the 4 river intersection (the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers merge and split into the Basak and Mekong Rivers flowing south) that converges in this capital city! Home to the Parliament and the Royal Palace, there is so much to see and do here! We started with a visit to Wat Phnom Historical Site which is where the city gained its name. A wealthy woman (Lady Penh) in 1372, build a buddhist temple and a Pagoda on a man-made ... read more

Actually the AmaWaterways cruise started in Kampong Cham which was a 5 hour drive south from Siem Reap. We met the tour group at the gorgeous Sofitel hotel in Siem Reap. I loved Viroth's Villa (in Siem Reap) but this was an increased level of opulence! Along the way we stopped a couple of times to use the "Happy Room" as we now refer our bathroom breaks to. One of the stops featured this incredible dragon sculpture made up entirely of bicycle tires. There was a giraffe as well which makes so much sense in Cambodia - go figure! The cruise really captured life in the countryside of Cambodia. We stopped and toured a local village that was attached to a buddhist monastery. Children starting at the age of 6 can attend as buddhist monks but ... read more

We are so glad that we added Hoi An to our itinerary! What a treat just walking around the streets! No wonder it is a protected UNESCO site - it is maintained in all its historical glory! You can buy a pass and visit up to 5 of their historical sites sprinkled all through the old town. We visited temples, assembly halls and a theatre that featured local musicians and showcased traditional Vietnamese dance. I am sure the dancers that got to be dragons and roosters loved performing those roles as much as we loved playing Disney characters and Storm troopers in our earlier dance Days!!! Darold joined his fellow monkey (statue) at one end of the famous Japanese Covered Bridge (the other end was a dog) - the 2 Chinese animals signs bookended the bridge. ... read more

We arrived in Siem Reap after a thoroughly enjoyable time at Hoi An/Da Nang, Vietnam. Getting here was a bit frustrating, a long flight that took us to Bangkok with long waits at both airports. The best part of the day was arriving late at our hotel, Viroth's Villa in Siem Reap, a 4 star hotel but only $100 CAN a night! It was recommended by home exchange friends (Ed and his lovely wife) that we met online during our previous Asia trip that was cut short by Covid. The breakfasts by the pool was gourmet! You won't regret a stay at this wonderful hotel - the service from all areas was exceptional. We loved getting bug sprayed every time we left the hotel by the front desk staff! What a treat! They arranged all of ... read more

We arrived in Hanoi after a gruelling 23 hours of travel time. We left Vancouver at 10 am and arrived in Hanoi at 11:05 pm but the time we spent on planes and sitting in Tokyo airport amounted to the 23 hours! Yikes! We slept well that night and got accustomed to the new time zone quickly. In 3 short days we tried to capture the highlights of Hanoi; the Ethnology Museum, Tran Quoc Pagoda in West Lake, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Museum, the One Pillar Pagoda, and the Temple of Literature. Unfortunately we missed seeing the Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton). The Ethnology Museum captured the history and ethnic background (54 recognized distinct ethnic groups in Vietnam) of this lovely country. The people we met were all so friendly and helpful. It was ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town March 14th 2020

We were so fortunate to book a Home Exchange at 8 Gurney in Penang. We had the entire 6000 sq. ft. 17th floor penthouse to ourselves! Lazy days spent at the pool, soaking the sun up at Batu Ferringhi Beach and exploring Georgetown, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our apartment was like a museum; Buddha statues inside and on the wrap around balcony, gorgeous Chinese pottery, Art pieces everywhere and Asian Bric Brac scattered throughout. In Penang, we are introduced to Grab, the company that put Uber out of business in Malaysia. Our condo is centrally located so grab fares to Batu Ferringhi beach is about $6 Can/18 RM and Georgetown $2 Can/6 RM. What a foodie paradise. So many restaurants and street food markets. We rarely spent more than $30 Can/90 RM for a dinner ... read more

What a surprise! I never expected such a modern city filled with skyscrapers and air conditioned mega malls! Thankfully it is juxtaposed against the narrow winding streets populated with little shops, tiny houses and street food markets everywhere. It has a big city feel with wonderful modern and old architecture sitting side by side, with many featuring viewpoints of the city from the higher levels of the towers. The Menara Kuala Lumpur and the Petronas Towers being 2 of the most famous and iconic. The subway is very modern and extensive. Easy to navigate and connecting with some of the older train lines and destinations. A highlight for us was taking the subway from the Petronas towers (we were staying nearby in a lovely high rise apartment building that only took us 3 hours to check ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Bayeux December 18th 2019

After leaving Prague, we arrived in Paris (Charles De Gaulle Airport) to pick up our rental car for our trip to Normandy and the WWII beaches! Unfortunately, the car was not ready which delayed our trip for over an hour and we drove to Bayeux in pouring rain as the sun set, making the grey day even bleaker. We arrived at Au Loup Historic Apartments in Bayeux late but we were able to gain access by connecting with the hotel staff during a frantic drive in the dark with pouring rain! The apartments were not a normal hotel as you get codes and basically stay in a fully equipped apartment in an old cottage courtyard in the French village. Lovely apartment style residence and 2 minutes walking distance from the 11th century church and downtown. Very ... read more

We arrived in Australia in time for their approaching summer which made both Darold and I very happy. The prospect of sun and beaches was finally looming! Darwin on the North coast of Australia had developed considerably since our last visit in 1987. A new mall with free Wifi was the main destination of everyone on board. Darold and I found a long haired Aussie from the Outback who ran an old fashioned barber shop complete with the striped pole and sleeping dog. Getting our hair cut while exchanging stories of our world travels, was a much more positive experience from the last time we visited Darwin where we just cooked slowly in the 40+ degree heat! A cool beer at the oldest pub in town rounded off our visit here. Another surprise was the incredible ... read more

We had 2 days to explore the wonderful island/country of Singapore, an incredible modern and dynamic city. The first day we arrived and went directly to Little India where we sat under cover enjoying some delicious Indian food (not Darold’s favorite but we had no other choice as the buckets of rain fell) that was simply served on a sheet of paper. Our day was filled with shopping in street markets, riding the flyer (a large Ferris Wheel with incredible views), watching the light shows on both sides of the unique and amazing development of the Marina Bay Sands (3 towers with what looks like a huge cargo ship resting above the towers) and ending our evening in Chinatown for dinner and nightlife. The next day we took a river cruise to see the famous SeaLion ... read more
