2/10/05 - 7/10/05 Encore à Alsace Arriving in Strasbourg was a relief in many ways. Paris is a wonderful city, but after seven days we are in need of some relative peace. We were only in Strasbourg one afternoon, night and morning, before collecting our lease car. Our hotel had huge rooms, which was a surprise, but unfortunately next morning we found out there was no hot water. So, you can imagine how impressed we were (especially Lorenza). We collected our brand, spanking new, Renault Scenic and made it to Niedermorschwihr without causing any major traffic incidents. Although I am sure the red coloured, tourist plates on the car scream a warning to keep well clear of our vehicle! 30/9/05 - The RER Affair Right this minute I am exhausted - I have just spent about 4 and a half hours trying to get from Paris Gare de l’Est (rail station) to CDG Airport and back, just to drop some bloody suitcases off - who had that bright idea? We met my sister Marg, husband Rob (lots of Rob’s in this blog) and their two children, Thomas and Courtney, at Gare de l’Est. They had taken the train from Strasbourg and it would be our only chance to meet up while we are all in France. So, Rob (the husband) decided it would be a great idea if Rob (the blogger) helped him take most of the luggage to their hotel. Meanwhile the others would wait for our return in a café. Well, it was ... read more

27/9/05 Tuesday - I now have the grand distinction of having succeeded in having my Uncle and myself ejected from the Basilique du Sacre Cour! I am sure this is a world first, which I am very proud of. We went to Montmartre and took a browse through some shops, then a coffee below Sacre Cour. Lorenza decided to look at more shops, while Uncle Robert and I took a look at Sacre Cour. There was a Mass in progress and very obvious signs indicating that photos were not permitted. I discreetly took the cap off the lens of my camera and snapped off a pic, but alas the security folks are very vigilant and they spotted the movement of my zoom lens from many metres away. So, the security guard obviously did not recognise Uncle ... read more

24/9/05 Saturday - The flight from Singapore to London was marred by the bad attitude of the British Airways flight attendants. Did they ever smile? No. Do they have a chip on their shoulder because we think Qantas is better? Yes. On arrival at Heathrow, we had to take separate flights to Paris. This was due to Lorenza having booked her passage some months later than Uncle Robert and I. So, Lorenza had a two hour wait at Heathrow, while Uncle Robert and I did the same at Charles de Gaul. Uncle Robert and I passed the time tuning our ears and brains into French, talking with a guy from Senegal. He was waiting for a connecting flight to Algeria. He had a brother working as a chef in Sydney. We also got to observe two ... read more

22/9/05 - Uncle Robert is fun to have around at airport security checks, because he has metal pins in both his hips, he sets the alarm bells ringing every time. Our flight from Sydney was as much fun as economy air travel can be. Lorenza was sitting next to Peter, a very friendly and talkative guy from the Riverina District of NSW. He is a wine producer; in his own words he produces “bulk wine, but not quality wine”. He kept us entertained with a brief life history, including having run as an independent candidate for the Riverina in a few state elections. We arrived in Singapore at 9:40pm. We made it through immigration to the luggage carousel and Lorenza realized that good old Rob had left both our jackets on the plane! So, she rushed ... read more

We had dinner last night with Cath and Scotty, to celebrate our departure, plus Rob's 45th birthday. We had no choice but to eat out as we have emptied the fridge and pantry (one tin of baked beans awaits our return!). The joys of packing are complete. The French phrase book (a kind gift from Karima - mon professeur français) is within easy reach. Our dogs, Ella and Gus are at their holiday home. The airport shuttle will pick us up at 11am and we will meet Max at the airport - we are "outta here". Next stop Singapore, then London and onto Paris.... read more

Here are the details of our rough travel plans for September to November. Lorenza and I are travelling to France with my Uncle Robert. The exact dates will change and are largely dependent on when the grape picking season starts in Alsace. Rob is hoping to do some grape picking in exchange for our accommodation. As you can imagine, much of this is relying on the weather, so setting exact dates is a bit hard. Plus, who really wants a travel schedule set in stone anyway? There are a few reasons for our trip. One is that Uncle Robert has not visited France for some years. When Lorenza and I travelled there last year and caught up with our distant relatives they were worried why Uncle Robert had not been in contact with them for some ... read more

After getting to bed at 2am we had a rather late start to the day. I took a walk around the town cemetery and the town walls of Bergheim, while Lorenza sat in the sun reading a book. In the late afternoon we went for a drive to the mountain resort of Trois Epis. It is a lovely little haven in the Vosges. There is also some kind of climate station there as well, but I could not work out the French explanation of exactly what it was for. Back at our hotel, we tossed a coin to decide on tomorrow’s destination. Heads was Freiburg in Germany, tails was Basel in Switzerland. Tails it was, we would head south to Switzerland for the day. We went to bed laughing that we had such choices, considering in ... read more

Jean guided us to Colmar and showed us what was his parent’s home. The place is now abandoned and in disrepair, the reason is a long story and best let slip into the shadows of my memory. It was built in the early 1800's in what was a prosperous farming area at the time. The district has now been swallowed up by the town of Colmar and borders on the "rough" end of town. It had recently been sold as a development site and would soon be torn down or remodeled as part of a trendy townhouse complex. Our little tour of the almost ruined house would be the last time Jean would visit there. The tears in his eyes told how he felt about its uncertain future and the memories which connected him to this ... read more
