Since yesterday was spent riding all around Asheville, the plan today was to ride the bike through the tunnel (how cool is that!) and into downtown Asheville some 3 miles away. Since Asheville is an artist community, there was nothing open until 10:00, and in fact some of the galleries didn't open until 11:00, so it was our excuse to sleep in today. So we had breakfast at the hotel, just before it stopped at 9:00 and headed out to Asheville about 9:45. We weren't sure about parking, and were expecting to find a parking garage, but as we pulled in to the corner of Patton and Broadway, there was a spot available right on the street. There was a 2 hour limit, but we had lots of change we had accumulated over the trip, so ... read more

Today we are going nowhere. We have planned 3 nights in Asheville to try and recuperate from the last couple of days. The last time we were in Asheville was back in 1999 when we were first dating and we came up here for the Honda Hoot Motorcycle Rally before they moved it to Knoxville and ruined it. It's a beautiful area, with the Blue Ridge Parkway running just outside and mountains everywhere. Since we have 2 full days here, we decided to spend one day sightseeing in the area and one day visiting downtown. We had hoped to do the downtown thing today, but the museum we wanted to go to is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so we had to change our plans. We had also planned on visiting the Biltmore Estate, but when ... read more

Today seemed like such a simple task, just ride down the Blue Ridge Parkway from Roanoke, VA to Asheville, NC. Should be about 275 miles, no big deal. It was Sunday morning, so we slept a little late, and by the time we ate breakfast and got on the road, it was after 9:00. Since we had bypassed the Roanoke Visitors Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway as we rode in yesterday, we thought we would begin today by backtracking a few miles north to visit the Roanoke Visitors Center and get our passport stamps. It didn't take too long, but by the time we were finally back on the road and heading south, it was 9:45. We began the day as expected, riding down the Blue Ridge parkway, stopping at a few scenic overlooks. It ... read more

Since we arrived at the hotel late from our Cass Scenic Railroad train ride yesterday, we were both tired when we awoke this morning. We had originally planned on staying last night back in Luray and resuming our ride down Skyline Drive where we left off, but the late ending of the train ride had us stay in Harrisonburg some 40 miles away. So our first hour this morning was spent just getting back to Luray to pick up where we left off. It did give us the opportunity for that one last ride up and over the mountain on US-211E. It's about 400 miles from Luray to Asheville, NC on what starts out as Skyline Drive while it's in Shenandoah National Park and turns into Blue Ridge Parkway when it leaves. We decided to split ... read more

Today we get to ride a train. Not just any train, but an actual steam locomotive! I've always loved trains, ever since I was a child, and today we are visiting the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WV. The train doesn't leave until 11:45, and it's about 2 hours away, so we didn't have any reason to rush this morning. It rained last night, and there was a forecast of rain later in the afternoon, so Jody and I decided to wear our rainsuits this morning, just in case. So after a quick breakfast in the hotel, we loaded up the bike and headed back across the mountains. We started our journey by heading back on US-33E which was such a great motorcycle ride yesterday. The roads were still a little wet from last night's rain, ... read more

This morning we are off to the hills of West Virginia. The weather looks promising as we begin our journey west. We are actually doing a loop into West Virginia today and tomorrow before we rejoin Skyline Drive at Luray again and head south on Saturday. Since we were excited to get going and this hotel didn't have a free breakfast, we packed up the bike and were on the road by 8:00 with a stop at McDonald's for quick breakfast. Today we are headed for the Loony Bin - officially called the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, it was in operation from 1858 to 1994 as the state mental hospital. Jody has been especially looking forward to visiting here since our trip began. The Lunatic Asylum is located in Weston, WV about 175 miles west of Luray, ... read more

Today is cave day! We're staying in Luray, so naturally we will be visiting Luray Caverns. There are a couple of other caves in the area, so today will be the day of caves. Since Luray Caverns is our first stop and is only about a mile up the road and doesn't open until 9:00, we were able to take our time about breakfast. Last night we walked into town and picked up a box from the post office, so this morning when the post office opened at 8:30, we walked into town again with what we hope to be the last box of t-shirts to send home. Then we hopped on the bike and headed over to Luray Caverns. Luray Caverns has expanded over the years from just a show cave, to a complex. It ... read more

Today we bid the North a fond farewell and officially return to the South. We're have about 2 weeks left to go on this trip and we are starting to feel like we are in the home stretch. After a quick breakfast at the hotel, we headed back north and west out of Delaware on into Maryland. We stayed far enough north to just skirt around northern Baltimore. I have been to Baltimore several times, and while I really like the downtown area, it's not really great for motorcycles. So we will save Baltimore for some other time. Most of the roads out of Delaware and through Maryland were about the same. We mostly followed Liberty Heights Ave/ MD-26 from Baltimore to Frederick. Mostly it was suburban secondary roads with lots of fast food, gas stations, ... read more

Today is Jody's turn for the pilgrimage to the place of her childhood. Unlike my returns to Lowell, MA which have happened every few years, Jody has not been back to Dover, DE since she was 15. The changes in Lowell have happened gradually as I notice when I return each time. To Jody, the changes in Delaware are dramatic as it has been over 35 years since she has been back. Since Jody was excited about her visit and didn't sleep well last night, we were able to get an early start this morning , so we had breakfast and were on the road by 7:30. The first couple of hours of the ride were really beautiful. We were traveling through southeast Pennsylvania farm country and most of the farms looked either Amish or Mennonite. ... read more

Today was just a great day! We slept in a little as we are only 15 miles away from the action and nothing opens until 9:00. So we had a leisurely breakfast and hit the road about 8:30. Our first stop of the day was at The Hershey Story, The Museum on Chocolate Ave. We thought we would get to know a little about the founder and get some idea what it takes to make chocolate. We arrived at about 8:50, so we hung around for a bit waiting for them to open. The museum was nice, but not as in depth as I had hoped. The building is 2 stories, but the actual museum only occupies the second floor. It went in a little to the early life of Milton Hershey, who started out as ... read more
