The blog will be short today as this is a rest day and we're not doing much. We both intended to sleep in this morning and we had good intentions, but the older I get, the more difficult I find it to sleep later. So we were both up by 6:30. After a quick breakfast, we headed back up to the room to relax and watch a little politics on television. We normally don't watch any television while we're on these road trips, but we both wanted to see this. It only lasted a couple of hours, and we were ready to find something not to strenuous to do for the afternoon. We mailed another package of stuff back home, and decided to tour the Pabst Mansion before tackling the laundry. The Pabst Mansion was the ... read more

It's time to leave the hustle and bustle of Chicago and head a little further north. Today we are off to Milwaukee, just 100 miles up the road. We were a little slow in starting this morning, those Doubletree beds are really comfortable. I also hadn't finished uploading the blog pictures from the night before, so I had to do it this morning. By the time we left it was getting close to 9:00. It takes a little while to escape the confines of Chicago, even if you are staying 20 miles west of downtown. The first part of the ride was through industrial areas, eventually leading to middle class suburban homes and finally to a really nice upper middle class bedroom community. It was about 30 minutes before we could really call Chicago behind us ... read more

We expected today to be busy and it was. We left the hotel at about 7:30 heading for our last visit to downtown Chicago. After a quick stop at McDonald's for breakfast and BP to top off the tank, we were on our way. Traffic was about the same as yesterday, except when we got to town we turned north instead. Since the art museums don't open until after 10:00, our first stop was 360 Chicago which is an observation room on the 94th floor of the Hancock Building. We were planning to park at the Hancock building and walk around to everywhere we were going. As soon as we arrived at the Hancock parking, we got the familiar story - No Motorcycles Allowed. What's with Chicago and motorcycles? Only this guy didn't have any suggestions, ... read more

Today is our first foray into a major metropolitan area on this trip with a journey into downtown Chicago. We are staying at a Doubletree hotel about 20 miles west of the city as the in town hotel rates were astronomical. The hotel is awesome - thanks again Maureen! - but does not come with a free breakfast so we decided to try the place we saw at dinner last night called the Honey Jam Cafe for breakfast. The breakfast was delicious, but the portions were larger than either of us could eat. So after our hearty breakfast we headed into town. Now we usually avoid Interstates when we're traveling on the bike, but when heading in and out of major metropolitan areas, it's always better to take the interstates if possible. Sure enough, by taking ... read more

Today we continue to venture north, but no trip to Indianapolis would be complete without visiting the Brickyard. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and Hall of Fame was only 10 minutes from our hotel so we had to stop before we continued our journey. Speaking of our hotel last night, we stayed at a La Quinta near the airport, and the room was fine, a little noisy with people running up and down the halls and talking loudly but no more than usual. That is until about 10:30 when someone either had a fight with his girlfriend or was just bored sitting in his room, but he decided to get in his car, open up the doors and crank up his stereo so he could jam to some tunes while playing with his phone. Of course, ... read more

After a great night's sleep and a good breakfast we were ready to hit the road heading north about 7:30 this morning. We're trying to escape the South today and head north to Indianapolis. We will make a stop along the way at our last cave for a while in Bedford, IN. So we cranked up Credence Clearwater Revival on the stereo and headed up KY-185. Ky-85 became KY-79 and they were both just wonderful roads. Two lane country roads between farms with just enough twists and turns, ups and downs to keep ut interesting. The scenery was beautiful, and we passed through all sorts of small towns along the way. There was mostly very little traffic, though we did follow a good old boy in a pickup truck who seemed to know the roads pretty ... read more

Today was a very short riding day as it is only about 35 miles from Cave City to Bowling Green. The first stop of the day was the National Corvette Museum which opens at 8:00. That gave us plenty of time to pack up, get a quick breakfast and be on the road by 7:30. It was a nice easy ride through country roads and corn fields. We also planned to visit the Corvette factory just up the road from the museum, but it looked like all the factory tours for the day were already booked up when I looked online. When I checked at the museum, they confirmed that since this was Corvette Homecoming Weekend 2017, all the tours were indeed booked. I should have looked a few days ago and I may have been ... read more

Today was a nice quiet day of cave exploration. We bought the tickets for an 8:30 and a 12:45 tour of Mammoth Cave yesterday, so our only obligation of the day was to show up. For some reason, we both slept well last night, in spite of the bed being a little hard. After a quick breakfast, we headed over to Mammoth Cave National Park around 7:30. We stopped at the entrance to take the obligatory picture, unfortunately we were the only ones around so we couldn't get a picture of both of us together. We had plenty of time, so we did a little hiking over to the Sand Cave on a path right next to the entrance. Then we headed over to the Visitors Center, but it was still a little early as they ... read more

We got up early this morning - Jody because that's what Jody does - and I because I wanted to be certain that my tire pressure issues were finally behind us. So I got up at 6, took a shower and headed down to the bike for what I hoped to be the last time checking tire pressure. The good news is that it was exactly 42psi just as it should be! So I headed back to the room to book a hotel for tonight and tomorrow in Cave City, KY. I had briefly considered the Wigwam Village Inn in Cave City which are hotel cabins made of concrete and shaped like teepees. They're left over from the 30's, and a little small, so we opted for something a little more conventional. By the time we ... read more

Today was destined to be a busy day. With Memorial Day weekend behind us, everyone, but us of course, was back to work and the world was resuming its normal course of events. Again, no big rush to get out of here this morning, as the first item on the agenda was to head over to Southern Powersports and see about replacing the rear tire. We pumped up the tire and hit the road at about 8:30 as the dealer was only about 6 miles away. Southern Powersports turned out to be one of the largest Honda dealers in the southeast. They had lots of Goldwings and even do trike conversions on-site. When the service guy arrived at 9:00, I told him the problem and told me he had the tire in stock and would get ... read more
