Careful: Elephant Crossing It’s hot. Scratch that – it’s very hot and very humid. It’s incredibly hard to describe what 68 percent humidity in a 36 degree heat is like unless you’ve experienced it, but take our word for it, it takes its toll. It took me about 16 hours to write that sentence. Yesterday, we went to visit the temples. People say they are impressive, but having actually seen them for ourselves, we were left to wonder about the feat of engineering they actually are. The structures are immense, being beautiful and domineering at the same time, stretching over a vast area of land. We got a relatively early start to avoid the largest of the crowds and the midday heat. Our guide, Khom, a friendly local with plenty to say, took us in air-conditioned ... read more

Last Day in Bangkok, travel to Siem Reap Last night was our last in Bangkok for just over two weeks, and the last party night for a little while. Having now firmly asserted ourselves as locals in the Roof bar, where staff and fellow drinkers alike recognise us and come over to say hi, we headed back for a few beers to say goodbye for now. We inadvertently got ourselves involved in a drinking contest with some German girls, who were on their last night of travelling after 6 months. I think we won, but my memory of the last few rounds is a little hazy! A handy tip for future reference – don’t go all out on a big night out when you have to pack the next morning. We weren’t exactly what the traditional ... read more

The world's biggest wet t-shirt party (The third and final night of Songkran) The plan was grab some food before joining in with the festivities. Figured, pop into a cafe that we knew for some essential fuel, about 1/2 a mile down the road. So much for plans! To say we weren't quite prepared for what would meet us just outside the hotel is something of an understatement. Within no more than 200 metres of the hotel gates, we are well and truly brought up to speed with the new year's rituals of this water festival. At 201 metres, we couldn't have been much wetter, having had buckets of water tipped down us both. The closer we got to Khao San Road, the streets were being taken over by literally thousands of revellers, with parties in ... read more

Apparently, there's a pretty big festival on... Well there's nothing like a bit of preparation. Very much on the school of thought that as we've been before, we don't need to do much research, we somwhow have stumbled upon Bangkok during the Songkran festival, formerly known as Thai Traditional New Years. Essentially, this means big parties, water fights and a lot of mud/paste/paint/etc. So we arrived fairly last night. We're staying at a quirky, but friendly hotel called Phranakorn Nornlen, about a ten minute walk to Kho San Road. Heading straight in the direction of the Roof bar, although stopping off en route for some food, we were pleased to see the entertainment was the same guitarist/singer that was here last October. The music was indie and played with energy and charisma. The place was p ... read more
