Xi'an
Did you visit the tomb of the first emperor? That's crazy they were thinking of moving the city. I hadn't realized how bad the pollution was until at this point of taking the photo.

Xian
The ancient capital of China is a must on any trip to China. To think all the hills surrounding it are tombs and probably less than a handful have been excavated to any extent...yet what there is on show is staggering. This pic reminds me of my first trip to Xian where the pollution was so bad they were talking of abandoning and relocating the city. Glad you had time to have a taste of its myriad of offerings, Alan.

It is good reading about past trips. It sounds like you had a wonderful experience. This is a city I hope to explore at some point.

Xitang
I'm interested to read about a peaceful Chinese town untouched by tourism. Such places seemed quite rare during my visit to China 20 years ago. I will keep Xitang in mind should I return to China again, it looks lovely ?

Xitang
Your comment is interesting as a lady in my tour group said she visited China probably around 30 years prior and said it was very different in the sense that many places hadn't opened up for tourism. I know she mentioned Xi'an as one of those locations. For Xitang, it really does have that ancient old feel to the place and from my perspective it felt like the crowds where mainly local people and perhaps the narrow paths made the place feel busier than it actually was, then again there are a lot of people living in China :D

Shanghai
Wow, Shanghai looks beautiful, and such a contrast between the historical and the modern. I too would probably have gone to Disneyland, I love theme parks. But the certain style of queuing "etiquette" that I too have experienced in China would not have been much fun for me. The Bund, Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and local market all look amazing places to visit ?

Shanghai
It really is a beautiful city and probably the only place in China that feels like it has some kind of westernised influence.

Hong Kong
Wow, you certainly fitted a lot into your visit to Hong Kong - well done Alan! I think I would also have chosen China over Thailand, simply because it seems more exotic and less visited. Good call too on the visa service I think, given the lack of time you had - expensive, but much much easier! And well done for fitting in a trip to Macau! ?

Hong Kong
Thank you, Alex. I really did feel like I did a lot with my time in Hong Kong and there was still more that I missed out on. I think HK is one of those places where you can go back to and a great choice as a stop-over location to break up long-haul flights. I wished I had more time in Macau but glad to have experienced what I did :)

Travel planning
You are right we often enjoy the travel planning as well as the travel itself. That wonderful sense of anticipation is energizing. We have not made it to Hong Kong yet and may need to use your friend. LOL. We will use your blog as a guide when we finally get there.

Finding the right pace
I'm glad you are willing to alter your pace for Fiona so both of you can enjoy the trip. You must care a great deal to be so thoughtful. Rome is an amazing city and it is so wonderful that you got tickets to see that Pope. That is very cool. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

Rome
Thanks Alan. I was fortunate enough to spend around six weeks teaching English in Rome in my younger days. Still, I don't think I saw quite as much as you guys did! ?
