This is week 4 in Japan and we are starting to feel like old pros with this whole Japan thing. We are able to find a roof every night and put food in our bellies. Everything else is gravy. True in life and in travel! Day 1 of week 4 is a very exciting day because we head to Kyoto and get to stay at the Westin Kyoto. This is where English royalty stay when they’re in town. The Toyoko Inns been very good to us but you won’t find the Queen staying there!!! It’s always good at a Starwood Hotel because Glenn’s a platinum member and he gets some free peaks. However, what are we most excited about??? Not having to pack for 4 days!!!!! Pure luxury! Kyoto is a beautiful city with tons of ... read more

This week Glenn and I travelled around Honshu (the big island where Tokyo, Kyoto and other big cities are on) by Japan Rail Pass. The pass wasn't cheap, but if you cover alot of distance, it is worthwhile. Hence, our itinerary of a new city each day. Glenn calls it Hell Week but I call it productive, efficient tour week. Many of the places you don't need more than a day to see the highlights because they are small towns. Anyways, you judge for yourself if it's an experience you'd like to enjoy. We started the week off travelling from Hakodate on Hokkaido to Kakunodate. Kakunodate is located in northern Honshu and is famous for its samurai district. There is an old part of town that has keep the old lay out of the old samurai ... read more

In preparation for our trip, Glenn and I went to the Japan National Tourist Office in Toronto for some information. When we mentioned we were going to Hokkaido, the lady said “Why??? It’s just like Canada!!!”. Hokkaido is considered one of the last frontiers of Japan. There are no less than 5 National Parks on that one island so there is a lot of nature and not a very many people on most of it. In this way, it is like Canada. The scenery is more like the west coast of Canada except the mountains are only in the 6000 ft range. When we got there, we were hoping to see the autumn foliage to remind us of a little of home. Unfortunately, they had a very warm fall and the trees were still green with ... read more

Helloooooooo family and friends! I know this blog has been a long time coming but I've been a little busy. Arranging hotels, transportation and itineraries are exhausting and time intensive activities. I can't believe I've actually been travelling for over a month already. Time has really flown by. Glenn and I are into the last week of our 5 weeks in Japan. We have seen and done so much that it really is hard to list them at this point so I'll just give you the highlights. If you get a chance, do fly in those lovely pods in business class if you have to be on a plane for a long flight. Our flight was just over 14 hours and I wished it was longer! So many movies and so little time! Initially, I was ... read more
