At the stage now where I have the time and inclination to travel. The accounts within are intended to be my slightly off beat view of things. It is not a factual account of places visited - look at a guide book for this information. You are invited to read an account of my travels - let me know your thoughts.

Well still in Aleppo and not really that impressed - I must update you though and inform you of an earlier mistake of mine - Damascus is not the worlds oldest inhabited city, its Aleppo....should have known that because the streets for certain have not been cleaned for 17,000 years! Maybe I exaggerate! Anyway there are good bits though, but its the grimy bits in between that don't light my fire! The Citidel is an elevated Arab castle that dominates Aleppo - very pretty but I've seen a few castles on my trip so far and its probably a 6 out of 10...maybe 7? Also the souks are rather special, built by the Ottomans in the 19th C - extensive and nice architecturally but when you have seen one souk...... I mentioned Barons Hotel earlier, well ... read more

To all those who enjoyed my initial note well here's another - to those who binned it immediately ...well bin this one too! I really am not sure where George Bush gets his information from regrading 'axis of evil'. I really could not fell safer here than is any part of the UK. You can go out at midnight and really there is not threat whatsoever. Try that in Brixton. The peoples reactions are mixed - I cannot describe them as friendly - but there again not unfriendly. I have met good and not so good - my main betes noires are the taxi drivers. What a weasly bunch they are ( mainly) they always try not to turn on the meter and when you forget to ask them - you get a price 2 or ... read more

Hi all - turn off now if not interested Not that I want to complain but after the civilisation of Beirut Damascus is a dump. I thought I would try the oldest city in the world for a couple of days but the place really drives me mad. It is a very conservative society - almost all the women are covered and you just cannot look for long because it is offensive. I booked a hotel in the old town and I thought this would be where the action was so to speak. Well its not! Once you seen a souk and several mosques ...well thats it for Damascus. Griped - there is just nowhere you can sit and have a coffee and read etc. If you do get a coffee its always a powered nescafe ... read more

Hi all - just quick note from Beirut where I have holed up for 4 days afraid to leave the building. Just Joking,,,,the city and country are lovely. The Lebanese have made great strides with reconstruction and the people are so welcoming. Beirut is chaotic, the driving is unbelievable but you feel so safe here. Army checkpoints are frequent but this adds to your sense of security. The women truly are beautiful. Outside Beirut there are some remarkable sites Roman, Greek, Muslim etc. Went to Baalbek yesterday they have the largest of all Roman temples. The mountains behind Beirut are beautiful and dramatic - would you believe they have a ski resort there with 20 or so lifts - just 1.5 hours from Beirut? The golden rule here though is not to mention the 'I' word.....Israel. ... read more
